Foucault's pendulum, was conceived by Léon Foucault (1819-68), a simple device to illustrate the Earth's rotation in 1851.
The pendulum shows the Earth's rotation by the plane of oscillation of its swing slowly revolve.
In one sense, the pendulum stays still, and the floor rotates.
Taken in the Panthéon, Paris
The neoclassical Panthéon was originally built as a church to St Genevieve, to fulfill a vow made by Louis XV on recovery from an illness. The architect was Jacques-Gabriel Soufflot (July 22, 1713-80).
Construction on the building began 1758, but was hampered by the economic situation; it was finally completed in 1790.
In 1791 the National Constituent Assembly declared that the church should be a mausoleum ""To the great men, the grateful homeland"".

A potential enhancement to dampen high frequency movements would be to shorten the pendulum below the kite line and add a small counter weight at the top of a longer vertical extension above the line. This approach is being explored by several KAPers and shows promice for reducing shutter speeds and obtaining smoother videos.
Coupling the pendulum counter balance with a gyro stabilized rig that can be shuttled up and down the line could result in a nice hybrid solution. I'll have to try this....
This is further discussed on the KAP Forum arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/discuss/comments.php?Discussion...
10/22/11: I built a simple prototype of the extended pendulum with counter balance. I did not spend much time with it, but the initial results were not very good. The prototype had a lot of large oscillations in the axis parallel with the kite line. I don't think I'll pursue this much further. Oh well... it was worth a try.
This is from an art project at university where we had to fold paper and take interesting pictures of it. We have this huge Foucault’s pendulum at my faculty and it’s just awesome, so why not include it in the picture?
These photos are from the physics of games teen program at Chardon Library. They are pendulum paintings that the teen participants created.
This is the part missing on my clock, that is the spring and the pendulum holder, the "H" shaped piece pluse whatever holds it in place.
I love the surreal quality of Steampunk, so I sat in my studio one afternoon—the whole afternoon—until these were conceived. Hands down my most unusual piece, this pair of earrings is graceful, yet dark.
The focal pieces are vintage watch movements hanging from sterling silver chain I oxidized, which connect at the top to a vintage pocket watch gear. A Swarovski crystal in Fire Opal dangles in the middle. The earwires are oxidized sterling silver as well.
