The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 18th of June is “infinity symbol”. As administrator of the group, Maria, said, such a symbol is not so easy to find, yet is easy to create. They do say “that if you don’t use it, you lose it”, and it has been a little while since I picked up my pencil and pens and did some drawing, so I decided to apply my artistic skills and draw the infinity symbol. I decided to be a little bit different and add to it the words live and love to it, which I have woven into the symbol, as I think it is important to live and to love to infinity. I’m sure you agree. I’ve surrounded my drawing with the tools I used to create it and my left hand, as my right hand was busy depressing the shutter for this shot. I hope you like my creation for this week’s theme, and that it brings a smile to your face.

STATIONERY is the theme for Macro Mondays Oct. 21 th.

I own this sharpener since I was a student... it is old but it never betrays me! 😉

I captured this image by using 2X magnification. I hope that you will like the result.

Stay safe and healthy, dear friends and have a nice Friday night. 🙋‍♂️

There's nothing fancy about this X-Acto electric pencil sharpener, but it does it's job quickly and efficiently.

The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 25th of March is “pencil sharpener”. Luckily this was an easy theme for me, as I am an artist amongst many other things, so I always have an array of pencils and sharpeners within easy reach. So, here we have one of my silver pencil sharpeners hedged in by sixteen of my Derwent studio pencils. I hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.

When I was twelve, I entered a drawing competition, and I won my first set of Derwent pencils: a tin case of 36. As a designer and illustrator as well as a photographer, over the years I have acquired several different sets of Derwents for different purposes, including my beloved Derwent Studio Pencil set of 72 which I use predominantly these days for designing clothes.

Derwent, or the Derwent Cumberland Pencil Company, is a manufacturer of pencils and other stationery. The business began in 1832 in Cumberland under the name of Banks, Son & Co. The company was bought by Acco UK and became a brand of their product range.

For Looking close... on Friday: "Pencil Sharpener"

“The word of a gentleman is as good as his bond; and sometimes better.” – Charles Dickens (British author).

“Perhaps the true definition of a gentleman is this: Whoever is open, loyal, and true; whoever is of humane and affable demeanour; whoever is honourable in himself, and in his judgement or others, and requires no law but his word to make him fulfil and engagement; such a man is a gentleman, be he the highest or lowest rank of life, a man of elegant refinement and intellect, or the most unpolished tiller of the ground.” – ‘The Gentleman’s Book of Etiquette and manual of Politeness’ by Cecil B. Hartley, 1860.

The theme for "Looking Close… on Friday" for Friday 25th of April is "fingerprints". Now, I don’t happen to have an ink pad handy, but I do have some grey lead pencils, and I decided to use the lead from one such HB pencil to shave and turn into powder which I was then able to dip my left index finger into to create this fingerprint, which I then turned into the head of a gentleman in a suit (very like me as I quite like wearing suits and smart ties). Whilst it perhaps didn’t turn out quite as clearly as I would have liked, after several attempts, this was the print with the best result. I do hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!

The pencil sharpener is at the back of the hull. It is part of a beautiful collection of pencil sharpeners shaped as miniature antique objects. I suspect we might see more for today's theme; I have already spotted one!

The background is a painting by my mother. It was actually not meant to be a real painting, it was just a piece of wood on which she finished the paint of her palette with random strokes of paintbrush, but I love it. She really is a wonderful painter.

For the "Looking close... on Friday!" topic "pencil sharpener"

Not used as much as my alternative which is a razor blade - that can sharpen everything from graphite sticks to charcoal, pastels and even erasers! But the graphite shavings the traditional pencil sharpener produces are useful for spreading on bigger graphite drawings!

Have a happy weekend, and stay safe! 😊

"A warm smile is the universal language of kindness." - William Arthur Ward (American motivational writer).

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 28th of December is "smiley in selective colour", a theme chosen because this is the last theme of this year. Where does the time go? Now this theme sounds fairly easy in comparison to some we have had this year, but whereas some of those more difficult themes have been easy for me, this one was far more challenging. Why? Because I don't have a single smiley in the house, and I have no idea where to get one from. So, I decided the only solution was to draw my own, which I did with my beloved Derwent Studio pencils. I did that on purpose partially because I needed a smiley, but also, because the theme is selective colour, I wanted to show the name of the colours I used in the photo in the black and white portion of the photo. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile like my smiley!

As this is the last "Smile on Saturday" before the New Year, I should just like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the group a very happy New Year. May the year ahead be filled with happiness and joy for you all.

A possible shot for Macro Mondays 'school supplies' theme. I have a couple of others to upload a decide between.

I tried a few different arrangements but I like the way the light lit up the wood shavings on this image.
