A pile of lobster pots on the quayside of Staithes. The large village, on the rugged coast of the north York Moors north of Whitby, was an important fishing and shipbuilding centre through the 18th and 19th centuries. Shipbuilding declined in the later 19th century as metal hulled ships became more common. Fishing has continued as an important feature of the village though tourism and arts are now the most important sources of employment.

St Mary's Abbey was founded in 1088 by King William II. It was rebuilt between 1270 and 1294, work on the central crossing tower beginning in 1278. Most of what can be seen in Museum Gardens date from this period. The most imposing remains are the western piers of the central crossing and the north wall of the nave aisle, with the lower parts of the south choir aisle in the foreground. The site was granted to the Yorkshire Philosophical Society in the early 19th century to become York Botanical Gardens. Later in the 19th century the gardens became a public park, the only large public open space in the city centre.
After a summer of Covid-19 and other distractions I think I am finally able to concentrate on a new study. It took a while to decide what to draw and then I had to dig out several older references to get the information needed to proceed. I am clearly out of practice. Still, the first couple of hours of rendering have gone quite well. Drawn with a Staedtler Graphite 0.3mm pencil and Tombow Mono Zero eraser in an A4 sketchbook.

The Red Tower was built in 1490-91 of red brick on limestone footings. It was built at the end the stone defensive wall which runs up to Walmgate Bar, on the edge of the Foss Fishponds, part of the extensive water defences formed by damming the River Foss. It is shown on the map by John Speed as taller structure with a parapet and flat roof. Guns were deployed here in the 16th century but it was described as derelict in the 18th century, though it was rented out for various uses, including a cow shed. It was restored in 1857-58 when the present roof and openings were introduced, presumably on the site of the original features. It was repaired in 1958 an then thoroughly restored in 2015. It is now used as a community hub and cafe.
A change of plan necessitates a quick sketch. My own reference picture had a car obscuring the foreground of the drawing. As I don't want the car in the drawing it was time to work out what the shop window would like without it. A quick sketch on a scrap of note paper later I think I have it figured out(?). Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil, my own references.
I am discovering a lot about how the blind adding was put together by drawing the detail. The skill of the masons is incredible to look at, so much so I took a detail shot of the drawing at this early stage to emphasise it. There are low relief canopies over the double-arched heads of the arcading. It is more remarkable as it is has survived since the 1280s or 1290s and the partial demolition of the building since the Reformation. From the lid 16th century the Abbey site was used as a quarry for building stone. Drawn in A4 cartridge paper sketchbook with a Pentel 0.3mm mechanical pencil and Tombow Mono Zero eraser, the latter almost as important as the former.
