In my previous post I showed you the rocks that were natural gifts to the southwestern coast of India. This is one of the reliefs that now adorn one of the rocks! These carvings were completed between the 5th and 8th centuries AD. The area is home to the biggest relief collection in the world and has another distinction.
Take a close look for those who have been in Cambodia. You will be struck by how much the carvings look like those at Angkor Wat. It is believed that this site in India was the source of inspiration for the masterpieces that adorn the area of Siem Reap.

The tower is now the only remaining section of the oratory which was built in 1328. It was built by the local landowner as a penance due to him plundering church property of white wine from a local shipwreck. It is Britain's oldest surviving medieval lighthouse and the second oldest one.
Today it is usually called the Pepper-pot due to the likeness of one.

The lack of the roof - which highlights the articulation of the architectural structure - in this abbey joins those of Melrose and Kelso in Scotland, Tintern in Wales, Cashel in Ireland, Eldena in Germany, Beauport in Paimpol ( Brittany) and the Convento do Carmo in Lisbon.
Of San Galgano, owner of the place that is celebrated on December 3, it is known that he died in 1181 and that, converted after a disordered youth, he retired to a hermit's life to give himself to penance, with the same intensity with which he had first given himself to debauchery.
The culminating moment of the conversion took place on Christmas day 1180, when Galgano, having reached the hill of Montesiepi, stuck his sword in the ground, in order to turn the weapon into a cross; in fact in the Rotunda there is a boulder from whose fissures sprout a hilt and a segment of a sword corroded by years and rust, now protected by a plexiglass case. The evident echo of the Arthurian myth has not failed to raise curiosity and, obviously, some bold hypotheses on possible relations between the mythology of the Round Table and the history of the Chiusdinese saint.

Morning all. Not the usual story here, but just a big thank you to all the comments and faves on the last image. I'll reply to everyone soon, although I've come home to a list of chores as penance for galivanting off to Iceland for a fortnight. Especially the garage - don't ask! But fair enough I reckon. I'm so excited about the images I have to work through, even if the sheer number of them is pretty overwhelming.
Apologies that I haven't been able to catch up with many of your own images too - I've seen some wonderful pictures in my feed from you. Look forward to catching up soon.
So for now, here's a follow up image to the Big Pink Sky Show, taken the same evening of course, on a slightly faster shutter speed as requested by Em and Steve. It really was one of those magical moments when we just happened to pick the right place at the right time.
Violet is a symbol of humility and penance as well as self-reflection.
I wish you all a nice weekend.✌
Herbst-Aster, Kissen-Aster.
Symphyotrichum dumosum (Syn. Aster dumosus)
Symphyotrichum dumosum, common names rice button aster or bushy aster, is an herbaceous plant in the aster family.
A fresco mural of Gothic painting of great value, dating from the beginning of the 14th century, in which the life of Saint Mary the Egyptian is narrated. This work was discovered by chance when polychrome painting was uncovered during a renovation. It collects in itself an entire iconographic program worth “tasting”, slowly breaking it down. It is dedicated to Saint Mary of Egypt, and its purpose is clearly moralizing.
Saint Mary of Egypt lived around the 5th century AD. After a life of dissolute and licentious youth, she knew how to find her conversion in a pilgrimage that she made to Jerusalem; since then, she retired to the desert and led a life of pure asceticism away from the world. We know her account of her life through Saint Zosimus, who visited her on some occasion to bring her the comfort of the Eucharist.
Her frescoes show us her life and show us how even the gravest sins can be redeemed thanks to the infinite mercy of God and the sacrament of Penance.
..that's all I got.

The Sagrada Familia has a Latin cross plan, five central naves, a three-aisled transept, and an apse with seven chapels. It boasts three façades dedicated to the Birth, Passion, and Glory of Jesus. When completed, it will have 18 towers: four at each portal, making a total of twelve for the apostles, four over the transept invoking the evangelists, one over the apse dedicated to the Virgin, and the central dome tower in honor of Jesus, which will reach 172.5 meters in height. The temple will have two sacristies next to the apse and three large chapels: the Assumption Chapel in the apse and the Baptism and Penance Chapels next to the main façade. It will also be surrounded by a cloister designed for processions and to isolate the temple from the exterior. Gaudí applied a highly symbolic content to the Sagrada Familia, both in architecture and sculpture, dedicating each part of the temple to a religious significance.

Togakushi mountains except for the southern part taken from a roadside near the Torii gate of Okusha. Three photos were merged to get this image.
Togakushi-yama (戸隠山), Kuzuryuu-yama (九頭龍山) and Takatsuma-yama (高妻山) from left to right are seen across the sanctuary forest of Togakushi Okusha.
It is rare to see such a blue sky in this area in winter.
The dragon usually symbolises the river in Japan and other Asian countries that depend on rice cultivation.
Legend has it that Kuzuryuu or Nine-headed Dragon used to be a fierce god but was penanced by a Buddhist/Shintou priest to become a god of fertility and agriculture. The legend implies a process of flood control and irrigation. Nine heads are an analogy of tributaries of a river.

A close up of the face of the Jizo statue of the Ontake Shrine, walking on the Nakasendo trail in the Kiso Valley (Japan) between Yabuhara and Narai via Torii Pass.
Information about Jizo (found on the internet):
""The Jizo Boddhisatva, ‘O-Jizo-san‘ in Japanese honorific language, is a deity fondly loved by Japanese people. You will find Jizo statues in a lot of places: in Buddhist temples, graveyards, at the side of the road in the countryside and, less commonly, at the corner of some streets in the cities.
Their main role is to protect children. They also protect the souls of children who passed away and unborn babies. In the Japanese beliefs, it is thought that the soul of children who died before their parents, consequently making their parents suffer, are not able to cross the river to the afterlife. They remain on the side of the river, having to pile stones as an act of penance. Devils come to try to destroy these stone towers, and this is when O-Jizo-san appears to save them and hide them from the evil spirits in his clothing. He then looks after them as as guardian in replacement of their parents.
The other main role of Jizo is to protect the travelers, which is why you will often find Jizo statues on the side of the roads like on the picture below. This tradition is derived from the ancient belief of Dosojin. Dosojin is a deity who protects travelers. The deity statue was placed on mountain pathways, crossroads, and at the borders of villages. The statues were generally in the shape of a couple. With time, Jizo has taken their role.
Jizo also protects firefighters and saves the souls suffering in the afterlife.""

Ganesha Ratha is a temple in Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of ten rathas ("chariots") carved out of pink granite within the group of monuments of the Pallava Period at Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO-inscribed World Heritage Site since 1984.The ratha is an example of monolith Indian rock-cut architecture dating from the late seventh century during the reign of King Mahendravarman I and his son Narasimhavarman I.
This is a two story structure. The ground floor has a cornice adorned with kudu (dormer windows/chaitya) arches, with peeping human heads except in few where we see a mini shrine. Above the cornice is a regular arrangement of oblong and square shrines, all interconnected with a cloister. The first story rises in the same fashion as of the ground floor except the mukha-mandapa. Its cornice is decorated very similar to the ground floor and this cornice is topped with the similar mini-shrine scheme.
This most complete ratha stands near the Arjuna Penance bas-relief. It being the most complete one might be due the reason of its location, near to the most famous bas-relief, the importance it would have enjoyed during the Pallava period. The ratha was known as Arjuna Ratha as mentioned by Lakshmiah Kavali in 1803. It was known as Arjuna Ratha due to its location, near the Arjuna Penance relief. ———- Location - Mada Koil St, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu 603104, India
