The Convair B-36 "Peacemaker" was a strategic bomber built by Convair and operated solely by the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1949 to 1959. The B-36 was the largest mass-produced piston engine aircraft ever made. It had the longest wingspan of any combat aircraft ever built (230 ft or 70 m), although there have been larger military transports. The B-36 was the first bomber capable of delivering all the nuclear weapons in the US arsenal from inside its two bomb bays without aircraft modifications. With a range greater than 6,000 mi (9,700 km) and a maximum payload of 72,000 lb (33,000 kg), (and thereby having the ability to carry both the US's atomic fission and thermonuclear weapons), the B-36 was the world's first manned bomber with an unrefueled intercontinental range. This bomber had an unrefueled range greater than all subsequent USAF long range bombers, such as the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, Convair B-58 Hustler, and the Rockwell B-1 Lancer; until the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit was deployed.

B-36J-1-CF AF Serial No. 52-2220, is on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, (formerly The U.S. Air Force Museum) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. Its flight to the museum from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona on 30 April 1959 was the last flight of a B-36. This B-36J replaced the former Air Force Museum's original YB-36 AF Serial Number 42-13571. This was also the first aircraft to be placed in the Museum's new display hangar, and was not moved again until relocated to the Museum's latest addition in 2003. It is displayed alongside the only surviving example of the massive 9 ft (2.7 m) XB-36 wheel and tire.

LEGO Model of a Convair B-36D Peacemaker

The Convair B-36 Peacemaker went into production shortly after World War II. The huge intercontinental bomber was designed to carry a large hydrogen bomb from the United States to the Soviet Union. Introduced into service in 1948, the B-36 was the United States' main nuclear deterrent during the early Cold War until it was replaced in 1959 by the all-jet-powered Boeing B-52 Stratofortress.

Jack Carleson designed and built this LEGO B-36 in 1/40th scale with a wingspan of six feet and a fuselage length of 4 ½ feet. This build has a detailed cockpit, an onboard crew of 15 LEGO Minifigures, six electric motors to make the propellers spin, color stamped emblems, and moveable landing gear and bomb bay doors. According to Jack, "This was a challenging build mostly because of the complexity of getting the proper airfoil of the wing and keeping that wing from sagging."

Jack "BigPlanes" Carleson

Jack Carleson started building LEGO models in 2012 at the age of 10. Three years later he combined two of his passions, aircraft, and LEGO. Jack specializes in creating large aircraft types by using Technic LEGOS as the main supporting structure to his 1/40th scale model aircraft, roughly the size of an average LEGO Minifigure seen in the display. His creations have ranged from World War II bombers like the Boeing B-29 Superfortress to gargantuan jumbo jets like the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380.

Jack's builds are not off-the-shelf LEGO sets. These are custom-built models known in the LEGO world as MOC or My Own Creation. Hours of research and design go into his models before the build. His aircraft include such details as antennas, interiors, electric motors, working landing gear and flaps, and aircraft markings that are printed directly onto the LEGO pieces.

The B-36 is the largest bomber and the last piston engine powered bomber produced by the United States. First designed to meet a World War II requirement for a plane capable of hitting targets in Germany from bases in the United States the prototype did not fly until August 8, 1946. The development of the atomic bomb led the Air Force to conclude that it still needed a very long-range bomber capable of delivering the bombs over intercontinental ranges and production of the B-36 was continued despite the end of the war a year earlier. A total of 383 Peacemakers were built between 1947 and 1954. The era of piston engine powered bombers was coming to a quick end with the introduction of the all jet B-47 and B-52. The B-36 was the symbol of American air power in the first years of the Cold War, but even the addition of four jet engines could not bring the B-36 up to the performance standards of the newer aircraft and all of the B-36s were out of service by the first months of 1959.

"Strategic Air Command" is not my favorite Jimmy Stewart movie, but one that I'll watch when it's on. I remember the grand flying scenes in this beautiful bomber. Imagine my pleasure in seeing one at the museum configured as a bomber with the appropriate SAC insignia. So cool.

BrickArms New Release. More playing around with backgrounds and lighting for this round of weapons. Just regular old cinder blocks, lit with 1 softbox from the back and cellphone flashlight from the front. LEDs make an interesting reflection when you hit the plastic at the right angle. Almost a sparkely rainbow effect where the glare meets the black. Cool stuff.

Consolidated-Vultee RB-36H Peacemaker Bomber 2011

Castle Air Force Base, near Merced, California. What a great place to visit.

www.castleairmuseum.org/

"When the closure of Castle Air Force Base was announced in 1994, a group of dedicated enthusiasts in the Atwater-Merced area formed a non-profit organization called the Castle Air Museum Foundation, Inc. Their purpose was to assume custody of the collection of aircraft. It was their dream to build a museum in which faithfully restored historic aircraft could be exhibited for public enjoyment.

Castle Air Museum represents history in a way the whole family can share with our awe-inspiring majestic warbirds. To stand under the wing of the Convair RB-36H Peacemaker or the Boeing B-52, you can imagine the sky around the bombers filled with enemy fighters."

The Convair B-36 Peacemaker was the largest bomber ever built when it first flew in 1946. It served as America's airborne nuclear deterrence in the early 1950's. It was capable of carrying the Mark 17 atomic bomb, which was 24 and 1/2 feet long and weighed an incredible 21 tons. It was carried in the bomb bay and even the B-36 could carry only one of these formidable weapons.

The design of the B-36 began during World War II and was originally intended to allow America to bomb Germany from bases inside America, should England fall into enemy occupation. To this end, the B-36 had a range of over 7,500 miles.

The wing span of the B-36 is 230 feet and mounted on these wings are six propeller engines and four turbojet engines. This led to the phrase " six turning and four burning " used by the aircrews who flew the Peacemaker. The B-36 carried a crew of 16 (22 in the reconnaissance version), who took turns flying the aircraft on its long missions.

Crew members traveled through the fuselage by means of a long narrow tunnel on a creeper trolley similar to ones used by auto mechanics. While one of the most powerful bombers ever built, the Peacemaker never once fired a shot in anger throughout its service history.

The first flight of the B-36 was on August 8, 1945 at Fort Worth, Texas. The longest recorded B-36 flight lasted 51 hours and 20 minutes, non-stop and without being refueled. The last flight of a B-36 was in April, 1959.

The aircraft on display at Castle Air Museum is one of only four B-36 aircraft remaining and the only reconnaissance version. It served with the 28th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Rapid City Air Force Base, South Dakota (Ellsworth AFB after June 1953) from 1952 to 1957. In 1957, it was sent to Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois. There it served as a ground instructional airframe and finally was part of Chanute's Air Museum. It was brought to Castle in 167 pieces, requiring 11 flatbed railway cars to move it. It took the efforts of dozens of volunteers and two and a half years of work to reassemble and paint the B-36.

Learning to be a Peacemaker (LPM) is a training course which helps young Muslims to understand they can have an important role in bringing communities together. In the same way, for those who are not Muslims, they will gain a better understanding of their friends and neighbors, build better relationships, friendships, and then create a safe space for everyone.
