As the first golden rays of the winter sun pierce through the chilly morning air, life in the park begins to awaken. Amidst the dew-kissed grass and the light mist lingering in the atmosphere, a street dog basks in the sun, embodying a picture of contentment and simplicity.
The dog, brown, finds its spot in the middle of the park. Nestled on a patch of soft grass, its body seems to sink comfortably into the earth, a perfect contrast to the crispness of the winter morning. Amaglebis Eklesia, also known as the Church of the Ascension, is a Georgian Orthodox church located in Ganisi, near Gudauri in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region, Georgia. The church is located on a hill and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Greater Caucasus Mountains. The exact date of construction of the church is not clearly documented, but it is an example of traditional Georgian Orthodox architecture. The name Amaglebis Eklesia means Church of the Ascension in Georgian. The church is still used for religious services and ceremonies, including baptisms, weddings and other sacraments. Visitors to Gudauri, a popular ski destination, can reach the church for a moment of peace and contemplation, as well as to enjoy the beautiful views of the mountain landscape.
The Amaglebis Eklesia church is a beautiful Orthodox church, quietly nestled in Gudauri, standing apart from the urban area, which gives it a deep sense of peace and privacy. The architectural style is authentic and carefully crafted, staying true to traditional Georgian Orthodox design. The church offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Caucasus mountains—breathtaking in any weather. Whether shrouded in mist, basking in sunlight, or glowing under the soft evening lights, the scenery from here is incomparable. Especially at dusk, when the backlights illuminate the church, the entire place takes on a magical atmosphere. Open during the day, the church welcomes visitors into a space that feels sacred and serene. There’s definitely something special about the energy here—a quiet stillness that invites reflection. Adding to the charm is the presence of a kind monk who cares for the church. If you're lucky, he might even introduce you to his three enormous, friendly Caucasian shepherd dogs, who are just as welcoming as the place itself.
