redraw of the box art to shockman/schbibinman 2. i kept blowing my mind when i was changing the layer colors so...yeah, too many flavors!
i've only played this game once on emu a couple of years ago. it's ok. nothing too fancy going on but i like the caracter designs. dudes got that classic rockman/cyborg 009 haircut thing going on.
So sometimes I watch shmuppers shmup on the YouTubes. Mainly I do it to look around the backgrounds (which you can't do while you're playing yourself) and at the enemy characters, to try to glean some inspiration. But also I like watching skilled players play.
Well, in the TurboGrafx-16 (PCEngine in Japan) version of Salamander (which is similar to Life Force but different), the victory screen shows a very interesting Vic Viper.
Beyond the fact that those are clearly 16x4 wedges on the front, there are the lower rear stabilizers.
When I first built this Vic Viper a few years ago, I debated on whether to include the lower winglets or not, since you don't see those on the Vic Viper ever. But then I saw THIS picture, and now I realize I wasn't even being original! It's just straight canon.
Anyway, for those of you who are math inclined, this year is an anniversary.
I wanted to upload another shot of our main protagonist for Image Fight II, showing how large the helmet with external visor is.
Now, I actually think this is a pretty good design, as real helmets (like for the F-35, for example) are extremely large - they're not just bike helmets with some stuff glued on like in cosplay.
However given how big this character's hair is, it's still kind of funny to think that the helmet is merely just a covering for his massive 'do.
Is that not the coolest/cutest game system you've ever seen? OK, I'll give you that the white PC Engine could be considered cooler/cuter, but the CoreGrafx II is pretty great, too :)
And, yes, that's a PC Engine, DS and Dreamcast all holding hands and waving rainbow and pink-triangle flags :)

I should probably add that this isn't a "PC Engine II." Rather, it's my second photo (of four? I can't remember...) of my regular ol' PC Engine :)
Pac-Man meets Mario, basically. OK, so this PC Engine platformer is nowhere near as great a game as Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. titles, but it's still a good bit of fun. I created this doodle to celebrate the introduction of "PCE Reviews" on one of my gaming blogs.
In case you're not as nerdy as I am, PCE in this context usually stands for "PC Engine." In this case, though, PCE is supposed to stand for that while also standing for "Punchy, Concise and (hopefully) Entertaining."
Get it?
A surprisingly spot-on home conversion of Namco's arcade Pac-Man spin-off from 1984. A fun little "Bubble Bobble clone" that was released back in the day for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM2 system (try saying that three times fast!).

Man the Vic Viper looks weird sometimes.
I finally found a decent TurboGrafx16 emulator (lamely known as the PC Engine to the rest of the world), and the Gradius port is pretty decent. Too much slowdown with more than 3 options, though.
