Seven to nine year olds discover mathematical patterns found in sunflowers, pine cones, and throughout nature while learning about a famous mathematician and exploring the Enchanted Garden. Held at the HCLS Miller Branch.

Our yard holds a wide range of subject matter for "Patterns in Nature". I had a hard time deciding which photograph to submit to the group, but in the end I opted for this blossom on one of the Japanese Anemone plants I added to the front flower bed in 2012. It didn't bloom last year. This year, I thought it was another variety of coral bells, but then the buds didn't look quite right. It's only because I saw a tweet from Canadian Gardening that I remembered I'd planted three Japanese Anemone plants last fall!

Anyhow, one of the three plants is blooming this year. The blossoms actually remind me a little bit of Alberta Wild Rose blossoms. But there's one big difference - the sort of scaly looking lime green centers (this part is yellow on a wild rose blossom).

This is a tree trunk. I have no idea what made all the little holes. I don't think I want to know. LOL

This is just one of many parts of a decaying tree that had an incredibly textured surface painted with the colors of various lichens. Lichens are a type of fungus. Some are flat like this, others look like mushroom caps growing on the sides of trees and others sport intricately branched structures. This scene was photographed at the Garden of Eden Trail at the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve in Liberty County, Florida.

An interesting arrangement on lines, patterns and textures on this log I found on this mornings shoot. My goal in photographyis wherever I can, to notice things most people miss.
