As seen from One World Observatory, which is the lookout point on top of the reconstructed One World Trade Center. Tough overloaded with patriotic pathos, it's certainly one of the most spectacular views in the world.

Back to the ever reliable Mr. French and the Lawrence Collection today and a change from the pathos of the eviction scene and the sunken dredgers of the last few days. A young lady stands at the entrance to a beautiful walkway lined with trees and no doubt filled with flowers and the songs of birds? I am sure her boater hat and clothes will give us a good hand at establishing a date?

Incidentally yesterdays quiz question was a trick, the horse in the image was the original "Horse with no name" famed in song and story!!!!

Januar 1921 in New York City.

This was Chaplin's first full-length film as a director (he had been a co-star in 1914's Tillie's Punctured Romance). It was a huge success, and was the second-highest grossing film in 1921, behind The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Charlie Chaplin's study of a tramp teaming up with a street kid (the cute little Jackie Coogan) has a fine line to tread between humour and pathos, and true to what you would expect of his best work, does it superbly. The tramp always manages to wring the hearts of his viewers and adding a little boy to the mix was the finishing touch. Look out too for little Lita Grey in the angel sequence, who would become Chaplin's 2nd wife four years after this film was made.

The Kid (1921)

Fans of Charlie Chaplin will love this fascinating documentary from director Alain Bergala, which takes an in-depth look at one of The Little Tramp's great masterpieces, The Kid (1921), and examines its enduring worldwide appeal.

The Kid was one of the most significant films in Chaplin's career. It was his first feature-length work throughout which he acted as star, director and producer. It was a labor of love that took over a year to complete and came in the midst of a difficult divorce from first wife Mildred Harris following the death of their newborn child. The Kid revitalized Chaplin's creative energy, which had been waning in the midst of his personal unhappiness, and inspired him to reach a new, more mature level of excellence in his already popular work.

It is a work composed of seven life-size figures in terracotta with traces of polychrome. The year of realization of the work and the identity who commissioned it are wrapped in mystery, as well as the exact arrangement of the statues. The most credible dating hypotheses oscillate between 1463 and 1490. At the center is the dead Christ, lying with his head reclining on a pillow. Around the other figures are arranged, among which stand out the two Marie, Mary of Cleophas and at the feet of Christ, Mary Magdalene, torn by grief with clothes swelled by the wind. The other figures are more composed, even if their faces show a painful participation. Then we recognize the Madonna, with folded hands, Mary of Joseph (mother of James the Greater and John the Evangelist) followed Jesus as a disciple, who tightens her thighs in a gesture of regret, while Saint John is represented in a silent cry , with a palm that supports the chin. Detached from the others is a figure kneeling in renaissance clothes, generally placed on the left, which represents Giuseppe D'Arimatea looks towards the observer. www.wikipedia

Another magnificent and poignant sculpture in Vigeland Sculpture Park Oslo. It was a dark and wet but it added to the pathos and fear of this harrowing sculpture.

I recently had the opportunity to travel to China for work and decided to book a jam packed weekend of travel and photography in some truly beautiful places. I remember seeing some photographs of this area a few months ago and thinking to myself that I would make it out there someday. Well, someday came faster than I thought and before I knew it I was touching down in Guilin, introducing myself to my photo-guide, Bart*. On the first night of my excursion, we made it out to Xingping and headed to banks of the Li River before sunset to get some shots of the Cormorant Fishermen.

Chinese fishermen are smart. Why go through the hassle of actually catching the fish yourself when you can have birds do it for you?! Each fisherman has a couple trusty Cormorants perched on their bamboo raft ready to dive into the river at the first sign of a fish. The cormorants have a snare tied to the base of their throats to prevent them from swallowing their hard-earned catch. When they come back to the raft, the fishermen just pull the fish out of their throats and dinner is served. It is a bit sad, but the birds do get fed in the end so I guess it all works out.

The nice fisherman on the right was so tired from nabbing the fish from the birds that he was dozing off. =)

* Bart is a gentle mannered photo enthusiast whose travels took him to China a few years ago and decided to stay and make a life in this rich country. For anyone even considering going to this area and interested in photography, there is no better guide than Bart. The guy has a knack for being able to get you access to the coolest places and people. Seriously, sometimes we would just walk into people's houses with nothing more than a smile and it was alllll right. I kept freaking out thinking the owner would chase us out with a shotgun, but most of the time we were just invited to have lunch and a conversation. I just made sure to keep my mouth full of food and take lots of pictures while Bart did his smooth-Chinese-talking. Check out his site if you are interested: www.flickr.com/people/35639713@N08/

Pietá, de Michelangelo. Pietà (Michelangelo)

Following, a text, in english, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

The Pietà (1499) is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French cardinal Jean de Billheres, who was a representative in Rome. The statue was made for the cardinal's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century.

This famous work of art depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The theme is of Northern origin, popular by that time in France but not yet in Italy. Michelangelo's interpretation of the Pietà is unique to the precedents. It is an important work as it balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism. The statue is one of the most highly finished works by Michelangelo.

The structure is pyramidal, and the vertex coincides with Mary's head. The statue widens progressively down the drapery of the Virgin's dress, to the base, the rock of Golgotha. The figures are quite out of proportion, owing to the difficulty of depicting a fully-grown man cradled full-length in a woman's lap. Much of the Virgin's body is concealed by her monumental drapery, and the relationship of the figures appears quite natural.

The marks of the Crucifixion are limited to very small nail marks and an indication of the wound in Jesus' side.

The Madonna is represented as being very young, and about this peculiarity there are different interpretations. One is that her youth symbolizes her incorruptible purity, as Michelangelo himself said to his biographer and fellow sculptor Ascanio Condivi:

Do you not know that chaste women stay fresh much more than those who are not chaste? How much more in the case of the Virgin, who had never experienced the least lascivious desire that might change her body?

Another explanation suggests that Michelangelo's treatment of the subject was influenced by his passion for Dante's Divina Commedia: so well-acquainted was he with the work that when he went to Bologna he paid for hospitality by reciting verses from it. In Paradiso (cantica 33 of the poem) Saint Bernard, in a prayer for the Virgin Mary, says "Vergine madre, figlia del tuo figlio" (Virgin mother, daughter of your son). This is said because, being that Christ is one of the three figures of Trinity, Mary would be his daughter, but it is also she who bore him.

A third interpretation is that suggested by Condivi shortly after the passage quoted above: simply that "such freshness and flower of youth, besides being maintained in by natural means, were assisted by act of God".

Yet another exposition posits that the viewer is actually looking at an image of Mary holding the baby Jesus. Mary's youthful appearance and apparently serene facial expression, coupled with the position of the arms could suggest that she is seeing her child, while the viewer is seeing an image of the future.

Interpreting the sculpture in terms of its name, one might trace the origin: "The duty children owed their parents, termed pietas, was associated by Romans with the duty humans owed their gods" (James S. Jeffers, The Greco-Roman World of the New Testament Era: Exploring the Background of Early Christianity, Downers Grove, Ill. InterVarsity Press, 1999).

While there was a precedent for painted depictions of the Virgin grieving over the dead Christ in Florentine art, the subject appears to have been novel to Italian sculpture. There was, however, a tradition of sculptured pietàs in Northern art, particularly in Germany, Poland and the Cardinal's native France. In addition, the church of San Domenico in Bologna had a German sculpted pietà. This has led some to believe that the donor had these statues in mind when the work was commissioned.

The process took less than two years. Michelangelo's interpretation of the Pieta was far different than those previously created by other artists—he decided to create a youthful, serene and celestial Virgin Mary instead of a broken-hearted and somewhat older woman.

The Pietà's first home was the Chapel of Santa Petronilla, a Roman mausoleum near the south transept of St. Peter's, which the Cardinal chose as his funerary chapel. The chapel was later demolished by Bramante during his rebuilding of the basilica. According to Giorgio Vasari, shortly after the installation of his Pietà Michelangelo overheard someone remark that it was the work of another sculptor, Cristoforo Solari. Michelangelo then carved MICHAELA[N]GELUS BONAROTUS FLORENTIN[US] FACIEBA[T] (Michelangelo Buonarroti, Florentine, made it) on the sash running across Mary's breast. It was the only work he ever signed. He later regretted his outburst of pride and swore never to sign another work of his hands.[1]

In subsequent years the Pietà sustained much damage. Four fingers on the Virgin's left hand, broken during a move, were restored in 1736 by Giuseppe Lirioni and scholars are divided as to whether the restorer took liberties to make the gesture more 'rhetorical'. The most substantial damage occurred on May 21, 1972 (Pentecost Sunday) when a mentally disturbed geologist named Laszlo Toth walked into the chapel and attacked the Virgin with a geologist's hammer while shouting "I am Jesus Christ."

After the attack, the work was painstakingly restored and returned to its place in St. Peter's, just to the right of the entrance, between the Holy door and the altar of Saint Sebastian, and is now protected by a bullet-proof acrylic glass panel.

The sculpture was shipped to New York in 1964 in order to become the main draw for the Vatican pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair, where it was viewed by millions.

Dark Lord: (With a tad too much pathos in his voice) "I am Darth Ragnagoth the Great! Ruler of this city, the whole planet and the nearby sectors. If you go now, you shall leave this planet unharmed."

General Rox: "In the name of the Republic, surrender your weapons and capitulate. We will put in a good word for you in court. Only 10 or 20 standard years in the ore mines of Delrian..."

Dark Lord: "If you little creatures continue to annoy me, I'll be forced to activate my lightsaber and cut you a little."

General Rox: "Go ahead then, Dark Lord!"

Darth Ragnagoth turned his back to the Republic forces... and... activated his lightsaber!

General Rox: "Sir, it looks like you just put a wooden stick on your lightsaber hilt, no?"

Unfazed by the shenanigans a beggar sat in a corner, asking for alms.

After the imposter and his companions were taken into custody, peace returned and everything went back to normal. As it ever was on the peaceful agriworld of Dagro. Nevertheless, the Dagro people would talk about the Sith Lord who ruled their planet for a long long time in the years to come and eventually the spectacle became part of the local folklore.
