Found these trucks here in Iowa while looking for subject for the sunrise. Although there was a nice barn to the right to frame them against, if I stood left - I would have lost that light so out of the several shots I went with this one. The barn shot alone would have obscured the sun.

Grand Teton National Park at Oxbow Bend, along the Snake River.
People ask me why or when do you shoot a scene in the 'landscape' orientation (horizontal) or in the 'portrait' orientation (vertical). I discuss this in detail in one of my free landscape articles--see below. Most landscape shots are framed horizontally, because that fits best with the scene. The choice for the serious nature photographer is more complex. The first decision you must make is, what is the end purpose of the shot? A calendar image is almost always shot horizontally. A magazine cover is shot vertically. For this shot, I did both. Follow the link below to see the horizontal image of this scene.

From looking at the two images of the same scene shot seconds apart, you can see how different they are. One encompasses the entire scene--the forest, the river, the snow-capped Teton mountains and the ducks are very small. It is a 'grand' scene. The shot above, the vertical one, 'zooms in' and focuses on Mt Moran and its reflection on the Snake River. Here the ducks are more of an important part of the scene--a secondary compositional element.
When I approach a scene like this, I try to always shoot it both ways and then process them to get the best out of the shot. If Outdoor Photographer magazine ever wants a magazine cover of Oxbow Bend, I have it. ;>) Please feel free to call!
Also note the 'placement' of the ducks in the version above. Now as a nature photographer, I did not swim out into the Snake River and 'place' the four ducks. As the patient nature photographer, I waited for the duck to place themselves for this shot. While my photography partner James Neeley was making his way along the river's shore taking many great images, I was setup on my tripod and just waiting for the ducks to swim into place. Then I snapped away, horizontally and vertically. One of the most important things I like to teach about nature photography is the 'art of waiting'. James Neeley, Jeff Sullivan, Kevin McNeal and I will be teaching a landscape and nature photography workshop here next June.

An exclusive figure from a Lego book or movie that isn't Batman?!?! Hell yes!
The Green Lantern Corps newest human members. These two were apart of the Justice League and had their own comic run for a few years now. However, Jessica joined the Justice League Odyssey team in space and Simon went...somewhere. Whatever the case, these two have a great dynamic. Their best friends and great partners.
Let's have more Minifigures that aren't Batman. And if you need to make Batman, make it a cool one like Flashpoint or TDKR. No one wants pirate Batman.
With all the unfamiliarity I experienced at Disneyland, being in the hub and shooting Partners I felt right at home. In fact, it really made me miss when Walt Disney World still had trees in the hub and when it was more compact. I understand why they did it but the hub at Walt Disney World just feels like a monstrosity now and the Disneyland hub feels very intimate. The trees with the sparkly lights just add so much.

When shooting long exposures like this, it's always amazing to me how still everyone stays when watching the fireworks at Disney, especially Wishes. It really just goes to show you how truly mesmerized everyone is by the magic there in the kingdom. Hope you enjoy!

I never grow tired of finding new ways to shoot, crop, edit, post, and share pictures from the Partners statue. Joe Penniston has inspired me to look at this from all angles possible because there are a lot of exposures to be made of this wonderful tribute.
What do teens do for fun…especially if they (or the friends they like to hang out with) . enjoy a outing at a dam which is a pardise for bird photography!
Why teen friendships are important:
For teens, good friends can be like a personal support group. They can provide:
1)a sense of belonging, a feeling of being valued and help with developing confidence
2)a sense of security and comfort in being with others going through the same experiences
3)a source of information about the changes that puberty brings, and what’s going on physically and emotionally a way to experiment with different values, roles, identities and
ideas...

Work on the main line south of Warrington meant the WCML was shut and trains were diverted via Chat Moss so I went down to Parkside Junction near Newton-le-Willows to capture scenes such as this.

The sky before sunset was a gorgeous shade of pink the day I was at Disneyland. I walked around the Partners statue and took a bunch of shots.

Todd & Eve
[the night before Todd's new coffee shop opens]
E. --- Look at us. You're about to launch a new shop. I'm running F2K. We're like this towns new power couple.
[she leans in and they kiss]
T. --- I'm just glad we're both finally closer together. No one likes long distance.
E. --- I know I don't.
T. --- Finally getting to work just minutes away from the best girlfriend a guy could ask for...
[she pulls away]
E. --- You know I hate when you call me that.
T. --- Seriously... What is so wrong with me calling you my girlfriend?
E. --- I'm not some little schoolgirl with a crush. "Girlfriend" just sounds like some term male chauvinist came up with to make themselves feel dominant.
T. --- You've got to be kidding me? No one thinks that.
E. --- You and I... we're equals in this relationship.
T. --- Us being boyfriend and girlfriend is equal.
E. --- No! When I hear those terms it implies that somehow you; boyfriend, are dominate to me; girlfriend and that is just not going to work! What we have... transcends those chauvinistic titles.
T. --- Okay, so what are we then?
[she thinks to herself for a moment then smiles]
E. --- We're partners!
T. --- Partners?
E. --- Yes!... We're life partners.
T. --- Umm, I must have missed the memo. When did we become a same sex couple?
E. --- It's not my fault they have it all figured out. ...What do you say [she kisses him on the neck] the two of us go back to my office [she puts her lips to his ear and whispers...] and we hammer out the details of this partnership?
T. --- You know... now that I think about it "partners" doesn't sound all that bad.
E. --- I told you.

i swear i didn't make this face on purpose for the camera -- it was my brand new kodak camera that made me do it. i was pissed that the flash was too bright for close up shots and there was no way to adjust it besides holding my finger over half of the flash and even then it was all washed out.
i am legitimately annoyed in this shot so shut the flap.
anyway,
Where'd all the naked people go? if you aren't a flickr member or you're not signed inclick here. those are some thumbnails of what you are missing. Yahoo/flickr changed some things around and for the time being we all have to be treated as children. Sorry.

I have shot the Partner's statue a lot but I think this is my favorite shot I've taken of it thus far. Of course I did a lot of post processing to get it to where it is, but I think it was worth it, all 14 layer adjustments worth. Also, I'm trying out a new watermark. Chime in and tell me what you think. Thanks for looking everyone!

This image holds out the first names of my wife and myself. Eilene, although not a common spelling is said to mean "bringer of light". Although I did little with regard to photography before retiring 16 years ago she did bring "light" in all forms into our shared journey. If it's one thing anyone who is destined to pick up a camera needs it is light and Eilene has contributed greatly to my body of work. My name, John, is most often said to mean " ... graced" or favored by a higher power. Together we have had a lot of light and experienced much "grace". In a way the objects selected for this photo perhaps show how it works.
For our 40th Wedding anniversary a Chinese friend at work created a hanging ornament with an explanation for the arrangement and meaning of the Chinese characters to mean "Partnering Forever!" We have kept it along with his original attachment hanging prominently where we see it often. It's appropriately shared for this Smile on Saturday as we will celebrate our 57th anniversary in a few days. Happy SoS everyone.
Today's shot is a pretty basic Partners shot with the nice soft out of focus castle in the background. After seeing some similar ones with the Dreamlights I sure wish they had them turned on when I was there. Hopefully next year. Thanks for looking everyone!
