A single readout module from the silicon vertex detector of HERA-B, an experiment at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg that attempted to further our understanding of CP-violation (why there is lots of matter in the universe but hardly any antimatter).
I helped to assemble and test these little beauties and was given a dead one as a leaving gift, which I treasure. Finally I have the gear to photograph it, I hope I've done it justice.
More explanation here...
Look! Neutrinos!
Cant you see them? it is the beamline for MINOS at Fermilab. Just behind this image is the near detector, looking at neutrinos before they fly to the far detector in Minnesota. This location is 330' below the surface. The access pit was very intimidating.
Ok, I don't remember what this is called, but it separates hydrogen gas to its different atoms, then feeds them into the linear accelerator to get split to particle level.
Science equip from the 70's is always so cool looking! (The first beam was sent through this device in November of 1970... 2 months after I was born, and it's still chugging!)
I mean, seriously, how cool looking is that art-deco awesomeness?
Multiverse. Illustration of multiple universes (spherical) making up the multiverse, also called the meta-universe or metaverse. This is the hypothetical set of possible universes, and includes all of space and time, and all forms of matter and energy, and also other forms of the laws of nature. Galaxies are seen on the surface of some of the expanding spheres (universes). The multiverse hypothesis arises from cosmology and quantum physics.
A bubble chamber - as funny as it may sound - has nothing to do with soapbubbles or soda water or such. These devices were used by nuclear physicists to detect particles which moved through the hot liquid filling the chamber. When racing through the chamber at high speeds the particles left visible traces in the liquid, each one consisting of tiny bubbles.

The antiproton is the antiparticle of the proton. Antiprotons are stable, but they are typically short-lived since any collision with a proton will cause both particles to be annihilated in a burst of energy.
The existence of the antiproton with −1 electric charge, opposite to the +1 electric charge of the proton, was predicted by Paul Dirac in his 1933 Nobel Prize lecture. Dirac received the Nobel Prize for his previous 1928 publication of his Dirac Equation that predicted the existence of positive and negative solutions to the Energy Equation (E = mc^2) of Einstein and the existence of the positron, the antimatter analog to the electron, with positive charge and opposite spin.
The antiproton was experimentally confirmed in 1955 by University of California, Berkeley physicists Emilio Segrè and Owen Chamberlain, for which they were awarded the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physics. An antiproton consists of two up antiquark and one down antiquark (uud). The properties of the antiproton that have been measured all match the corresponding properties of the proton, with the exception that the antiproton has opposite electric charge and magnetic moment than the proton. The question of how matter is different from antimatter remains an open problem, in order to explain how our universe survived the Big Bang and why so little antimatter exists today.

George Zweig ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Zweig ) gave a fascinating talk this afternoon at CERN, covering the history of his development of the quark model (which he called "aces"). He said it was his first visit to CERN since he left in 1964. I hope the talk was recorded for posterity.

I'm not sure if the "Ringnar" and "Quadro" signs were added just for the open house or if they have always been there, but I thought they were a nice touch.
August 2012 - With a thin sliver of diamond, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have transformed the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) into an even more precise tool for exploring the nanoworld. The improvements yield laser pulses focused to higher intensity in a much narrower band of X-ray wavelengths, and may enable experiments that have never before been possible.
In a process called “self-seeding,” the diamond filters the laser beam to a single X-ray color, which is then amplified. Like trading a hatchet for a scalpel, the advance will give researchers more control in studying and manipulating matter at the atomic level and will deliver sharper images of materials, molecules and chemical reactions.
Part of the SLAC team who worked on self-seeding is shown alongside the hardware in the LCLS Undulator Hall. They are (from left to right) Jerry Hastings, John Amann, Jim Welch and Henrik Loos.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), fnal.gov/ located just outside Batavia, Illinois, near Chicago, is a US Department of Energy national laboratory specializing in high-energy particle physics. As of January 1, 2007, Fermilab is operated by the Fermi Research Alliance, a joint venture of the University of Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology and the Universities Research Association (URA). Fermilab is a part of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor.

Inside the Universe of Particles exhibit at CERN.
CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research) is a scientific research laboratory located on the outskirts of Geneva in the suburb of Meyrin.
Established in 1954 it is a laboratory for particle physics research and is home to the Large Hadron Collider – a 27km circular tube in which scientists attempt to create new forms of matter and recreate the Bog Bang on a small scale.
A visitor centre housed in a large globe on the site offers light shows and numerous electronic and more tradition displays to explain the foundation’s work and the theories and laws of particle physics.

Yes, it's the Hadron Supercollider again! I am obsessed. I just love the colours, and the tangle of wires and technology. This was based on a quote somewhere that once they get the protons spinning round and round, this huge amount of energy flying around 27km of tunnels... there will still only be enough matter to fill one tiny, fine grain of sand.
There seemed something very Blake-ian about that.
dr.Ozda and physicists at the LHC simultaneously discover the quark/anti-quark. Ozda, toiling solo in his home bathroom lab equipped with an old TLR was quoted as saying, "Whoa."
While on the other side of the globe a team of giddy scientists quipped, "The better we understand the strong force, the more we understand a large part of the data that we see, which is quite often the background to the more exciting things we are looking for..."
Merry Quarkness to all.

Introduction “The Stairway to Heaven Manuscript” – Blueprint to communicate with Infinite Intelligence…………… “I took 3 nights and 3 days off of work, to step by step find out why I ended up where I did, and what I was like in the past — there were a series of beliefs about changes, and problem solving, and crisis management, etc etc that were tied to negative beliefs, not positive — since you can’t change the past, the only way this could be done would be to change certain beliefs about types of events, and place them in a certain sequence working from the present to the past, systematically having all past experiences not have effected me at all. — I got to the sequence of changes needed, and found them to be “in theory” correct. Then I had to believe that if I could adopt these beliefs, in the order I had written, that they would work / instantly HEAL my Depression problem. I had to also believe that my mind would accept these new beliefs without question, and that I had come up with a way to fix all issues at once, and most importantly, the plan would work.
