Temple's Speciality:
Planet Jupiter-Guru Bhagwan is on the direct grace of Mother Ambika. Praying to Ambica will free the devotee of the adverse aspects of Jupiter. This is a rare design in this temple. Planet Mars is under the Arasa-Bodhi tree on the banks of the sacred theertha. The temple is also known as Mars Temple – Sevvai KOIL.

General Information:
There are shrines of Lords Nataraja, Bhairava, Subramanya, Kasi Viswanatha, Acharya Sankara, Mothers Visalakshi, Vilvambika and four Saivite Saints-Nalvar. Sage Agasthya is with Nalvar. Special abisheks are offered to Acharya Sankara on Panchami day in the full moon fortnight. Lord Anugnai Vinayaka graces the devotees.

Greatness Of Temple:
When Lord Shiva granted darshan to Sage Agasthya with Mother Parvathi, Ambica was wearing golden ornaments, hence She is praised as Swarnambika. The shrines of Mothers Mahalakshmi and Saraswathi are before the shrine of Ambica. The Navagraha Mandap is on the opposite side. As Sage Agasthya destroyed demons Vilvalan and Vatapi in this place, it is named Villivakkam. Agasthya’s destroying of the demons event is celebrated during the Vaikasi Brahmmotsavam of the temple.
Lord Veerabadra graces from a separate temple at the southern entrance of Lord Agastheeswara temple. He appears with two sharp teeth with a Danda in His left hand. Daksha is before Him in a bowing form. Mother Badrakali shrine is in the front mandap. As Lord Veerabadra is another form of Lord Shiva, Pradosha pujas and one time puja on the Shivarathri day are dedicated to Him.
Lord Veerabadra is facing north, the direction of Kubera the Lord of Wealth. People pray here seeking prosperity boon. Hence, He is praised as Ishwarya Veerabadra.
Planet Mars created a spring here and worshipped Lord Shiva for relief from a curse. This spring-theertha is outside the temple. Hence, the temple is also famous as a Mars – Angaraka Parihara Sthala. Lord Valampuri Vinayaka is nearby facing north. Devotees call this temple as Sevvai Temple – Sevvai-Mars. Lord Shiva granted darshan to sage Agasthya on a Tuesday (Sevvai day in Tamil). On Tuesdays of Aadi month (July-August), special pujas are dedicated to Lord and Mother.
Temple History:
During the Wedding of Lord Shiva with Mother Parvathi in Mount Kailas, Sage Agasthya was in south performing Shiva Puja in this place. Two demon brothers Vilvalan and Vatapi caused hindrance to his puja. Agasthya killed them with his penance power and incurred the Brahmmahati dosha-a sin caused by killing others, good or bad. He worshipped Lord Shiva here for relief from the dosha and also relief from any disturbance to perform his pujas. Lord deputed Veerabadra to help the sage. Lord Veerabadra protected Sage Agasthya and also relieved the sage from the dosha. He thus has His due place in the temple. As sage Agasthya worshipped Lord here, He is praised as Lord Agastheeswarar and is the presiding deity of the temple.

இத்தலத்தில் குருபகவான், அம்பிகையின் நேரடிப்பார்வையில் இருக்கிறார். எனவே இங்கு அம்பிகையை வேண்டிட குரு பார்வை கிடைக்கும், குருவால் உண்டாகும் தோஷம் நிவர்த்தியாகும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை. இத்தகைய அமைப்பைக் காண்பது அரிது. இங்கு தீர்த்தக்கரையிலுள்ள அரசமரத்தடியில் அங்காரகன் காட்சி தருகிறார். எனவே இக்கோயிலை "செவ்வாய்கோயில்' என அழைக்கிறார்கள்.

பிரகாரத்தில் நடராஜர், பைரவர், சுப்பிரமணியர், காசி விஸ்வநாதர், விசாலாட்சி, வில்வாம்பிகை, ஆதிசங்கரர், நால்வர் சன்னதிகள் உள்ளன. நால்வர் சன்னதியில் அகத்தியர் இருக்கிறார்.
வளர்பிறை பஞ்சமியில் ஆதிசங்கரருக்கு விசேஷ அபிஷேகம் நடக்கிறது. இங்குள்ள விநாயகர் அனுக்ஞை விநாயகர்.
பிரார்த்தனை
செவ்வாய் தோஷத்தால் திருமணத்தடையுள்ளவர்கள், பயப்படும் குணம் உள்ளவர்கள் இங்கு வேண்டிக்கொள்கின்றனர்.
நேர்த்திக்கடன்:
அகஸ்தீஸ்வரர், அம்பாளுக்கு வஸ்திரம் அணிவித்தும், வீரபத்திரருக்கு சந்தனக்காப்பிட்டு, வெற்றிலை மாலை அணிவித்தும் நேர்த்திக்கடன் நிறைவேற்றுகிறார்கள்.
தலபெருமை:
அகத்தியருக்கு சிவன், அம்பிகையுடன் காட்சி தந்தபோது, அம்பாள் திருமணக்கோலத்தில் தங்கநகைகள் அணிந்திருந்தாள். எனவே இவள், "ஸ்வர்ணாம்பிகை' எனப்படுகிறாள். இவளது சன்னதி முகப்பில் மகாலட்சுமி, சரஸ்வதி சன்னதியும், எதிரே நவக்கிரக மண்டபமும் உள்ளது.
வில்வலன் மற்றும் வாதாபியை அகத்தியர் அழித்த தலம் என்பதால் இவ்வூர், "வில்லிவாக்கம்' என்றழைக்கப்படுகிறது. வைகாசி பிரம்மோற்ஸவத்தின்போது அகத்தியர் அசுரர்களை வதம் செய்த வைபவம் நடக்கிறது.
ஐஸ்வர்ய வீரபத்திரர்: அகஸ்தீஸ்வரர் கோயிலின் தென்புற வாசல் எதிரேயுள்ள தனிக்கோயிலில் வீரபத்திரர் இருக்கிறார். கோரைப்பல்லுடன் இடது கையில் தண்டம் ஏந்திய இவரது அருகில் வணங்கிய கோலத்தில் தட்சன் இருக்கிறான். முன்மண்டபத்தில் பத்திரகாளி சன்னதி உள்ளது. பவுர்ணமி தோறும் வீரபத்திரருக்கு சிறப்பு பூஜை நடக்கிறது. இவர் சிவ அம்சம் என்பதால், சிவராத்திரியன்று இரவில் ஒரு காலமும், பிரதோஷ வேளையிலும் சிறப்பு பூஜை நடக்கிறது. இத்தலத்து வீரபத்திரர், குபேர திசையான வடக்கு நோக்கியிருப்பதால், இவரிடம் வேண்டிக்கொள்ள குடும்பத்தில் ஐஸ்வர்யம் நிலைத்திருக்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம். எனவே இவரை, "ஐஸ்வர்ய வீரபத்திரர்' என்று அழைக்கிறார்கள்.
செவ்வாய் கோயில்: நவக்கிரகங்களில் அங்காரகன் (செவ்வாய்) தனக்கு ஏற்பட்ட சாபம் நீங்க, தீர்த்தம் உண்டாக்கி சிவனை வழிபட்ட தலம் இது. எனவே இது செவ்வாய் தோஷ பரிகார தலமாக திகழ்கிறது. அங்காரகன் உண்டாக்கிய தீர்த்தம் கோயிலுக்கு வெளியே இருக்கிறது. தீர்த்தக் கரையிலுள்ள அரசமரத்தடியில் அங்காரகன் காட்சி தருகிறார். அருகில் வடக்கு நோக்கி வலம்புரி விநாயகர் இருக்கிறார். பக்தர்கள் இக்கோயிலை, "செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை கோயில்' என்றே அழைக்கிறார்கள். அகத்தியருக்கு சிவன், ஒரு ஆடி மாத செவ்வாய்க் கிழமையன்று காட்சி தந்ததாக ஐதீகம். எனவே இங்கு ஆடி செவ்வாய்க்கிழமைகளில் சுவாமி, அம்பாளுக்கு விசேஷ வழிபாடு நடக்கிறது.
தல வரலாறு:
கைலாயத்தில் சிவன் திருமணம் நடந்தபோது, தென்திசை வந்தார் அகத்தியர். அப்போது இத்தலத்தில் தங்கி சிவபூஜை செய்தார். அவருக்கு வில்வலன், வாதாபி என்னும் சகோதர அசுரர்கள் தொல்லை கொடுத்தனர். அவர்களை அகத்தியர் வதம் செய்து விட்டார். இதனால் அவருக்கு பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷம் உண்டானது. தோஷம் நீங்க சிவபெருமானை வழிபட்டார். தொடர்ந்து தனது பூஜைகள் சரிவர நடக்க சிவனிடம் பாதுகாப்பு கேட்டார். அவரது பூஜைக்கு இடையூறு வராமல் காக்க, வீரபத்திரரை அனுப்பிய சிவபெருமான் அவரது தோஷத்தையும் போக்கினார்.
காவலுக்காக வந்த வீரபத்திரர் இத்தலத்தில் காட்சி தருகிறார். அகத்தியர் வழிபட்ட சிவன் அகஸ்தீஸ்வரர் என்ற பெயரில் மூலவராக இருக்கிறார்.
சிறப்பம்சம்:
அதிசயத்தின் அடிப்படையில்: இத்தலத்தில் குருபகவான், அம்பிகையின் நேரடிப்பார்வையில் இருக்கிறார். எனவே இங்கு அம்பிகையை வேண்டிட குரு பார்வை கிடைக்கும், குருவால் உண்டாகும் தோஷம் நிவர்த்தியாகும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை. இத்தகைய அமைப்பைக் காண்பது அரிது. இங்கு தீர்த்தக்கரையிலுள்ள அரசமரத்தடியில் அங்காரகன் காட்சி தருகிறார். எனவே இக்கோயிலை "செவ்வாய்கோயில்' என அழைக்கிறார்கள்.
