This photo showcases goal #12: responsible consumption and production. I took this photo today, in my backyard. It is of my parent’s garden! My parents have always had a garden, typically with fruit bushes and trees (like the blueberries bushes in the green netting in the back), but they started this section with the raised beds two years ago growing mostly veggies and so far have had lots of success!
We are lucky to have a large yard where we can have a big garden, but growing any plants will help create habitats and resources for insects and pollinators. These gardens are even more beneficial without the use of pesticides and herbicides because it reduces the likelihood of insects becoming repellent tolerant/resistant, which can make insect populations very hard to control, especially in monocultures. Gardens also benefit the soil through improved aeration, reduced compaction, and the roots creating channels for soil organisms and water to go through.
We also have a compost bin (just out of frame to to left) that allows us to use any scraps or waste we create. Compost adds nutrients and organic matter back into the soil, furthering the improvement of the soil’s health.
