After digging around the shed earlier this afternoon, we have uncovered a mystery jig that we had almost forgotten about!
Quang had designed and machined a chain stay jig for use with our main jig plate, so this separate contraption became obsolete.
The main issue is: we don't know how to use it.
First, let's look through the parts.
It is an elevated base with three main sections:
1. A platform for the bottom bracket shell to rest on. Its height is adjustable with two screws. Presumably, this is to position the chain stays to have a good interface with the shell's ports. It would perhaps make sense also that this can dictate bottom bracket drop.
2. Two swiveling chain stay holders. Each holder is two parallel plates on a pivoting base attached by some nuts and bolts, and the chain stay sits between the nut on the inner face of the plate and the opposite plate. Furthermore, the chain stays are held down by a length of metal that has its height adjusted by a spring-loaded wingnut to evenly clamp the stays.The height of the holders is fixed. Because the angle of the chain stay holders is adjustable, this means the angle that the chain stay entering the bottom bracket shell can be altered to increase clearance for larger tires.
3. A dummy axle. The dummy axle holds the dropouts in place. The axle has indexing Ds to align the pair of dropouts, and by extension, the chain stays. This axle also rotates, enabling the use of both horizontal and vertical dropouts. The one currently fitted is 130mm wide, i.e. for modern road spacing, but its possible there is a 120 and 126mm axle lying in a box somewhere.
OK, so that is the overview of the jig. Now, the problems we have with trying to understand it, relative to each part of the jig. We have tried fitting some chain stay offcuts and a BB shell from a mini frame onto the jig to demonstrate.
1. The BB shell rests on the platform just fine. Adjusting the height and ensuring the platform is level is also not too much of an issue. Once everything is fitted into the ports, it can only be assumed the shell will be centered on the platform. No problems here.
2. The holders is the area we are having most of the difficulty understanding. With the dropouts fitted in the dummy axle and to the chain stays, the angle of the chain stay holders extend the stays towards the BB shell in such a way that they will not enter the port.
3. Vice versa, if the chain stays are fitted into the BB ports, the dropouts at the opposite end of the stays will not sit on the dummy axle.
We have tried fitting a fully built frame onto this jig and experience the same issues.

This project is my speculation about presumable existence of parallel universes. The universe is infinite, but there is only limited amount of particles everything is made of. That means, that any combination of limited amount of participles will repeat again. Theory of hyperspace says, that our universe is just one small bubble in the foam full of bubbles.What if somewhere there, in the depth of infinite universe, exists exactly the same version of me?
