The convoys, pulled by electric locomotives, would have cars for transporting containers and also full trucks, so they would represent a complement to road transport and not just a competition.
This project, unlike the one presented by Tecnicagua, represents a solution to the problems of the Trasandino and also of the highway and Cristo Redentor pass, since it would always be protected from snow and could operate every day of the year. In addition, the wide track would allow cargo to remain on board the same train on both the Chilean and Argentine railway networks.
This project was declared of “national interest” by the governments of Chile and Argentina in 2008 and since 2010 work has been done to obtain financing.
If completed, it is expected that the tunnel and single-track railway will be put into service after 10 years of construction with the capacity to transport up to 24 million tons of cargo per year (the Cristo Redentor pass has a capacity of 5 million tons per year). This would be extended to 34 million tons with the construction of double track in the open-air sections and then to 54 million tons through a second parallel tunnel.
In short, although the Trans-Andean Railway as such has only been part of history for many years, the need for a safe, efficient and high-capacity means of transport continues to exist. Therefore, it is not so far-fetched to think that perhaps one day we will see railway convoys crossing the Andes mountain range to unite our two nations, just as the Clark brothers once dreamed.

Los convoyes, arrastrados por locomotoras eléctricas, contarían con carros para el transporte de contenedores y también de camiones completos, por lo que representarían un complemento al transporte por carretera y no solo una competencia.
Este proyecto, a diferencia del que presentó Tecnicagua, representa una solución a los problemas del Trasandino y también de la carretera y paso Cristo Redentor, ya que se encontraría siempre protegida de la nieve y podría operar durante todos los días del año. Además, la trocha ancha le permitiría a la carga seguir a bordo de una misma formación tanto en la red ferroviaria chilena como en la argentina.
Este proyecto fue declarado de “interés nacional” por los gobiernos de Chile y Argentina en el año 2008 y desde el año 2010 se viene trabajando en la obtención del financiamiento.
De concretarse, se espera que el túnel y ferrocarril de vía única se ponga en servicio tras 10 años de construcción con capacidad para transportar hasta 24 millones de toneladas de carga al año (el paso Cristo Redentor tiene una capacidad de 5 millones de tons. al año). Esta se ampliaría a 34 millones de tons. con la construcción de vía doble en los tramos a cielo abierto y luego a 54 millones de tons. mediante un segundo túnel paralelo.
En definitiva, aunque desde hace muchos años que el Ferrocarril Trasandino como tal es solo parte de la historia, la necesidad de un medio de transporte seguro, eficiente y de alta capacidad sigue existiendo. Por ello, no es tan aventurado pensar que talvez algún día volvamos a ver convoyes ferroviarios cruzando la cordillera de Los Andes para unir a nuestras dos naciones, tal como lo soñaron alguna vez los hermanos Clark.
