I've been having a pretty crazy summer up till now, and it'll only be getting worse (or better, depending on how you word it) in the coming weeks. So before heading off to college, I wanted to finish up at least one big project for my website before packing everything up and moving out.
This is a full life-size paper mache sculpture of an African lioness. She is made from 98% recycled material, including the paint, the newspaper, and even the fishing line whiskers. The only materials which were not recycled were the eyes, the epoxy clay used for the mouth, and the sealant used to protect the paint.
The ears were found at the estate sale of a local taxidermist who recently passed away, and the paint is left-over from when we remodeled our home kitchen. Even the paint brushes I used for detailing the eyes and mouth were made from recycled packing foam and scrap fur!
This beautiful piece was created with the idea in mind that you could display a lifelike work of wildlife art in your home, office, or lodge, without having to actually destroy a live animal in the process.
All markings and measurements are exact to those of a real African lioness. And this baby is HUGE!
Protrudes from the wall 25", and is 15" across the ears. Backed with two plates of recycled cardboard from the local gorcer's, and signed by the artist. Has a hole in the back of the cardboard for hanging (you can look into it and see the newspaper stuffing I used to fill the hallow inside).

This original free standing sculpture is one-of-a-kind (OOAK). It is handcrafted without the use of molds. Imperfections or irregularities are intentional and show evidence of handmade. It is not meant to look mass-produced.
I call the technique "fabric-paper maché": the armature is made of wire and up-cycled fabric. I then sew and glue (with my own homemade paste) more layers of fabric and paper to create various textures. The fabric face is hand stitched, and beads and a washer have been added to the eyes.
Embellished with beads, collage and vintage book page. It is then coated with a protective acrylic varnish.
The sculpture is light but strong.
This art doll will sit pleasantly on your bookshelf, mantle or desk, and is suitable for collecting.
