A hike into the SW interior of the Olympic Mountains inside Olympic National Park that presents outstanding views in any direction is the LaCrosse Basin / O’neil Pass area. Kelsie, Lance and I entered this world by hiking up the N. Fork Skokomish River Trail; it was a 2 day hike into the basin of about 20 miles with our first camp at 2 Bear then Marmot Lake. You should leave a few days to explore this area as there is a lot to take in. Our trip included rain all but the one day that we were in the basin. Wildlife sighted included 2 bears, deer, frogs, hawks and mice. With the weather going to change we bugged out to Home Sweet Home on a day before the real rain came in. After all night rain with no end in sight we opted to make the long hike (about 14miles) out in the rain. The 9 Stream crossing was a different story from a few days earlier as the rains made this stream a much higher churning chocolate torrent rushing under a very small log bridge to cross. Thanks to 352/s all went well. Oh did I mention the 110 down logs on the trail that had to be traversed by under or over passage, BUMMER! There also was 1 bee nest to contend with. With soaked everything we entered the parking lot at 5:30 after 8 hours on the trail with only a few short stops. Truly this is a location to visit again some day.
