Before the pandamnit, Menega seafood restaurant is always crowded. A popular restaurant for good taste, value for money and beachfront seatings with views to the airplanes take off / landing.

Picture taken from the Menega seafood restaurant, Jimbaran beachfront, South Bali, Indonesia.

I remember those cute little troll dolls from when I was a kid. I hacked mine, cut it's hair, and made it evil. I had no idea they are still around in 2021, until one showed up in a garbage bag of dead, broken, discarded toys for my project. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

We caught a mouse (raton) last night. Here in Mexico all we could find was the sticky paper, so I had to actually kill it myself. It was huge, carried away one of those little bananas, and ruined three tomatoes, before finally stepping in the glue. But that made me think of those so-called 'humane' live traps, where the mouse poos and pisses all over itself out of fear, before suffering an agonizing death due to dehydration. Live traps are nothing more than mouse coffins, they die buried alive. Like so many other 'green' initiatives, ignorant of the unintended consequences reality presents. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

Protection from what? Environmental greenwashing? Truth? When the Exxon Valdez grounded on a reef in 1989 hundreds of enlightened, benevolent, green activists descended on Prince William Sound to "save the wildlife", wading knee deep in spilled crude oil without any protection, absolutely no self preservation instinct or awareness. Mother Nature cleaned up her natural, organic, free-range substance faster than any Greenpeace environmentalist could predict. Within two years everything was back to normal, of course, because oil spills and seeps have been occurring naturally for millions of years, so what else would one expect, logically? But 20 years on those activists started suffering terminal ill health from their exposure. They should have been wearing HazMat suits! Or simply faced the truth and let it be... #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

For my darling, sweet, beautiful, hard working wife Lizzy – Happy Birthday – Love of my life… The second thing I most want to do with you today is walk along the beach, dip our toes in the ocean, maybe get sand up our bums. Hit a taco stand for lunch, buy some fresh Octopus to grill on the charcoal BBQ, what more do we really need? Love you more than anything! #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

An LGBTQ thing. The Gay Pride parade in Madrid a few years ago was quite the show! Even the police had an entry! Another thing I love about Zipolite, Mexico, is the freedom, tolerance, and acceptance - nobody gives a second glance at men and women holding hands. Long before the flag became a thing I decorated my camping teepee with exactly the same rainbow! #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

davidleech.ca/?p=1406

To a Mexican lifestyle. For us it’s simpler: less government interference; lower taxes; we walk every day to shop for food, wine, and Tequila; lower cost-of-living. It’s friendlier: especially if we try our best to speak Spanish; eat at the taco stands; and shop at the local markets. Warmer is enticing: no shovelling snow; no long-johns or heavy winter jackets; fewer, lighter clothes; walks along the beach; swim in the ocean. Retirement is imminent, eventually no more engineering, I can focus on my photography career, maybe open a bricks-and-mortar gallery, escape from the hypocrisy of useless social media. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

I'll be able to focus on my photography career

davidleech.ca/?p=1174

We are now in Southern Mexico, Oaxaca State, Huatulco Riviera, in the little hippy dippy town of Zipolite. This is our second reconnaissance trip to Mexico as we plan for retirement. We certainly can’t afford to live in Canada on our pensions, anymore. Disappointing, actually, I didn’t plan on working a 45-year career, helping to improve civilization, just to live out my senior life in energy and tax poverty. So, we’re looking for someplace where the climate suits our clothes, and the cost-of-living suits our pensions. Then we can just “Let It Be” (Beatles). #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

Happy, happy we are, hanging out in the hippy dippy town of Zipolite, Oaxaca. On the southern Pacific Ocean coast of Mexico. The temperature never drops below 20 C, every day is around 30 C. The sea is bathtub warm to swim in. The food is amazingly fresh and sweet. Life is simple, free. This will be a great place to retire to... #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

Abstract fine art exhibitions have included ionH2O (water), Corrosion (rust), Dereliction (abandonment), and my best seller Juxtaposition (architecture). I've finished the last of the Consumption panels, and will be photographing all of next week to wrap up this project. I did submit a grant proposal to Canada Council for the Arts, but was rejected. My next project is The Mexican Conundrum, started in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco State, in February, to be continued in Zipolite, Oaxaca State, from November to April. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

Our first per-retirement reconnaissance was to Spain. We loved the lifestyle there, swimming in the Mediterranean sea, shopping at the markets, new places to explore, friendly people, and - at that time - the cost-of-living was affordable. A good bottle of wine could be had for three Euros. We planned a second trip, to the south of France, Spain, and over into Portugal. But some virus got in the way and our trip was cancelled. After a year it was still too hard - and getting too expensive. So we made a u-turn and used our credits to explore Mexico. We loved it, so now we are on our second per-retirement reconnaissance in Zipolite, Oaxaca state, and we think we have found our calling. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

davidleech.ca/?p=1486

That's it folks. My Consumption project, my social commentary mission, formally comes to an end. From now on it's back to art for arts sake. Moving forward I'm going to recap Juxtaposition, my favourite fine art journey, which I'd been shooting around the globe for several year - before government imposed lockdowns interfered and cancelled Paris and Leon; then Mexico City and Guadalajara... Our next adventure is to retire from engineering and relocate to tropical Zipolite on the Oaxaca coast, where the weather suits my clothes, and the cost-of-living suits my pension. Once there I'll start posting on life here, the Mexican Conundrum, and open a little fine art gallery... Wish us luck, and a wheel of fortune! #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

Here on the Zipolite beach, Oaxaca state, Mexico, you certainly do see some pierced privates! Some look quite painful, or like the 'tin can man' uncomfortable to say the least. Oaxaca State, Mexico offers a magnificent Pacific shoreline. We walk the Zipolite beach back-and-forth almost every day, paying homage to the beautiful sunsets. The climate never drops below twenty degrees Celsius, perfect for my clothes. It's time. I've come to terms with early retirement. Our corporate financial year-end is August 31st. That means my first day of retirement will be September 1st, 2022 - exactly 45 years to-the-day from when I started petroleum reservoir engineering. The first day in my career was spent supervising a welltest. I didn't have a clue about what was happening! But I had a white hat and thousands of questions. 85 % of our knowledge is acquired on-the-job. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

2022: Retire, Move to Zipolite, Mexico, Open a Fine Art Photography Gallery...

davidleech.ca/?p=1398

Disconnected from reality - just like all three levels of government in Canada these days. I just want to retire now, and get out, go some place where the climate suits my clothes, and the cost-of-living suits my pension. Loving our current reconnaissance to Zipolite, Oaxaca, Mexico for the simple, laid back lifestyle. Minus 30 back 'home' plus 30 every day here, what's not to love? Solving a mouse problem, shooing away a scorpion, and letting the water clear keep us very connected with the reality of moving down for good. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

Like sustainability, a perpetual motion machine, or greenhouse gasses generating energy from nothing, purely science fiction, theoretically improbable. Especially considering planned obsolescence, nothing is built to last anymore, there's no reliability, no longevity, nothing can be fixed or repaired any more. On average the life of stuff we don't really need (pathological consumption) is only 90 days from new to blue (cart). Once, in Junior High school, I walked out of last class into the arms of 'protective police custody.' The upper class white greasers didn't like a long-haired hippy. Their first attack on the stairs failed - the gang leader sent his entire entourage in front of me. The plan was for them to stop mid-flight, forcing me to stop, and the leader would cut my hair. I heard the scissors open, turned around, and laid him down with my first punch. He had no protection. I got suspended for 'starting' a fight and he threatened to kill me. Hence the police report. The second attack was a different story... Police were useless. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

I read to my kids every night before bed. Norbert Nipkin was their favourite story. It's about a fearsome young giant Zlog named Grog who makes friends with Norbert, rather than eating the tasty little Nipkin. The moral of the story is that anybody, everybody, can become friends, no matter their stature or food preferences. I also read plenty of joyous, fun, nonsensical Dr. Seuss. I read Fox in Sox as fast as I could, One Fish Two Fish backwards, and if it was late I'd just skip through reading random words, done in a minute, but the giggles didn't necessarily help them get to sleep any sooner. The Woke movement is completely misguided banning Dr. Seuss while leaving Hitler's Mein Kampf on the shelf. #consumption #abstractphotography #fineartphotography #pandamnit #lockdown

Plastic itself isn't the problem. Plastic is an amazing product with countless benefits to humanity. Pathological consumption is the problem. That impulsive, compulsive, socially expectant spending on gifts, presents, souvenirs, toys, happy meals, kinder eggs, whatever the desire or occasion. Police have their own skeletons-in-the closet and checkered history - just like so many other bureaucratic and religious institutions. Colonialism; Catholicism; Guns, Germs, and Steel (Jared Diamond). Isn't that what the new holiday is for - Truth and Reconciliation? Or was it just for a surfing holiday? My ancestors left Ireland and France to escape tyranny - over 100 years ago. We don't need a new Woke Liberal Left Wing Tyranny: Socialism, Fascism, or Communism, to tell us how to live our lives righteously, benevolently.
