This is Vatika Garden at Sector - 5, Panchkula. It was pretty dark,. But it's more or less how this garden looks at evening. Unfortunately for many locals, the pond, the fountain, etc shut downs completely at 7 P.M.

FRONTPAGE EXPLORED

This one made it to the front page of flickr explore on 27th September, 2008

The train from Kalka to Shimla is very exciting. Its not a fast train but a very perfect train to see the nature in the mountains. The weather is cooler, sky is bluer and sometimes if you are lucky enough, you can catch the rays of the sun from the clouds.

The Kalka-Shimla Railway was built to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the Indian rail system. Now, Shimla is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh and Kalka is a town in the Panchkula district of Haryana. Spectacular scenery along the whole route, and the marvels of its construction, keeps the traveler on this line spell bound. On leaving Kalka, 656 meters (2,152 ft) above sea level, the railway enters the foothills and immediately commences its climb.

The Kalka Shimla Railway runs through 103 tunnels (one is not in use; so only 102 in service). The longest tunnel is at Barog, and is named after the engineer in charge of construction. Mr Barog committed suicide after making a mistake in laying the alignment. His tunnel was abandoned, and a second tunnel was constructed one kilometre away under the supervision the Chief Engineer, H.S. Harrington.

The scenic Kalka Shimla Railway, a narrow gauge track, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the steepest rise in altitude in a distance of 96 km.

Captures this on one of the brightest nights i have seen thus far. Had to enhance the contrast and highlights and shadows to bring out the moon out of this photograph. Otherwise all i could see initially was a white glowing ball on black background!

Thanks for your making it featured on flickr Explore, my friends. Always nice to see your feedback and likes on photographs!

My favourite shot from the park series captured with a Nikon D700+Nikkor AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8 D IF-ED. I've been shooting in this park for almost two months now. I normally go there after dropping my daughter to school in the morning. The light is seldom good. Most of the time it is grey and foggy. But on some days a mild, distant sun appears and then I make the most of it. I'm doing a few professional assignments but most of the time photography is a solitary exploration of light, colour and the superb cameras and lenses created by NIKON.

Personally I'm only intrigued by "straight from the camera" photography. I enjoy "composing" on the camera through subtle variations of exposure, metering, white balance and depth of field, but I rarely process the images now. I always shoot in the RAW mode because the jpeg conversion on the D700 and D3 seems to eliminate a lot of detail. I upload the RAW files on iPhotos. At times I increase or decrease the exposure by a couple of stops but I rarely feel the need to do any more processing. Among the park shots recently uploaded on Flickr only 17-35 #8 and 9 have minor amount of extra sharpening and saturation added before conversion to jpeg.

I view photography as a documentation of the time and space we inhabit. Documentary photography only has value if it remains true to the moment. One comes across plenty of photographs of landscapes rendered in spectacular, vivid and completely UNNATURAL hues and colours. Digital excess! I fail to see the point of tampering with nature. Nature is the oldest and greatest artist in the world. I believe as photographers the best homage we can pay to it is to remain completely true and natural in the work we do.
