The Pamban rail bridge, an engineering marvel and Indiaās first cantilever bridge.
The 2.06 km long bridge, the second longest sea bridge after Bandra-Worli sea link was thrown open to traffic in 1914 and is still going strong, providing the much needed rail connectivity to the pilgrim centre of Rameswaram.
Located at the worldās second highly corrosive environment, next to Mexico, the bridge was constructed amid challenges. Having survived the devastating 1964 cyclonic storm

One of the most picturesque locations on Indian Railways, this bridge is an engineering marvel.
After an early morning arrival at Rameswaram, followed by a quick trip to the Ramanathaswamy temple, we come here as early as possible to catch 56723 Madurai-Rameswaram Passenger in time. But the train itself is an hour delayed!
After a long wait, finally we could hear the chugging of the Golden Rock WDG3A #13458 pulling the puny train over this beautiful structure.

With 143 piers, spanning 2 km between the mainland and the island, it is the second longest sea bridge in India, the Pambam Rail Bridge. Come February, the Pamban bridge, commissioned in 1914, will turn 100 years.Efforts were taken for the construction of the bridge as early as the 1870s with the British administration planning to expand trade connectivity to Sri Lanka, then Ceylon. However, the construction of the rail bridge commenced only by 1911 and it was commissioned on February 24, 1914. German engineer Scherzer designed the central part of the bridge that opens up to allow ferry movement. On an average, 10 to 15 boats and small ships pass beneath the bridge every month.

Even as the seas continue to rise and fall, railwaymen never fail to do what they are expected to despite all odds.
From Wikipedia :
The Pamban Bridge (Tamil: ą®Ŗą®¾ą®®ąÆą®Ŗą®©ąÆ பாலமąÆ) on the Palk Strait connects Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It was India's first sea bridge. It is the second longest sea bridge in India (after Bandra-Worli Sea Link) at a length of about 2.3 km.
From the elevated two-lane road bridge, adjoining islands and the parallel rail bridge below can be viewed.
The railway bridge is 6,776 ft (2,065 m)[1] and was opened for traffic in 1914. The railroad bridge is a still-functioning double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge.
The railway bridge historically carried meter-gauge trains on it, but Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that finished Aug. 12, 2007. Until recently, the two leaves of the bridge were opened manually using levers by workers[1]. About 10 ships ā cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers ā pass through the bridge every month.
As per chronicles of Kutch Gurjar Kshatriyas mentioned in their book - Nanji Bapa Ni Nondh Pothi. The erection and construction of Pamban Bridge was done by Mistri Manji Daya with Lakhu Devji both of Anjar and Gangji Narayan of Khedoi. Together built the Railway lines and Pamban Bridge over creek of Rameshwaram to Pamban construction of which they started in year 1887 and completed in around 1910. While working on Pamban Bridge the Mistris Lakhu Devji Vegad of Anjar and Gangji Narayan of Khedoi also built famous Temple of Neel-Mandir having seven domes at Rameshwaram, construction which, they started in 1899 and completed in about five years by 1905.
The bridge is located at the "world's second highly corrosive environment", next to Miami, US, making the construction a challenging job. The location is also a cyclone-prone high wind velocity zone.

People normally rush to the Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge to spot the trains to and from Rameswaram chugging over the Pamban Bridge. You might easily miss small details in such a hullabaloo.

We stopped off at Pamban Beach and when we got there the rail bridge was open to let the coast guard ships through. It only opens about 10 times a month (or so we were told) so we were extremely lucky

The Pamban Bridge on the Palk Strait connects Rameswaram island to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It is the longest sea bridge in India at a length of nearly 2.3 km (2345 meters) and stands as a fine example of Indian architecture. The bridge was constructed with sufficient elevation and a beautiful scenery of the sea, adjoining Islands and parallel rail bridge below can be viewed from the road bridge.
The railway bridge is 6,776 ft (2,065 m). Bridge was opened for traffic in 1914. Bridge contains vertical lift section and still it is functioning quiet well. It carries meter gauge trains on it, however, recently the Indian Railways are in the process of upgrade it to carry broad gauge trains. Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai - a premier national research laboratory in India, is handling this task.
A walk on the bridge is an exhilarating experience. At times the breeze could be strong. The view of the distant sea and the string of islands on the left of Pamban island is simply breathtaking. Though the bridge is a stunning structure, the entrance to the bridge from both the Mandapam and Pamban sides do not do justice to this impressive landmark.
