Kmart #7310

4711 Babcock Street NE, Palm Bay, FL - Palm Bay Center

Opened 1979. Closed forever on September 7, 2014, leaving Brevard County with zero Kmart stores.

What you see here is all that remains of the Palm Bay Kmart - a lifeless shell. These last few photos of this store were taken on September 14th, one week after closing. This day was actually supposed to be the last day in business, however during the last few weeks of the closing, that date was pushed up a week. It really saddens me to see my Kmart all closed up like this. As of this weekend, this store was still sitting abandoned and is still under the ownership of Sears Holdings. Only time will tell if those Publix rumors are true.

Exterior view of the store. I have more exterior and interior pictures of this store that’ll I’ll be uploading to flickr in a few weeks, but today’s uploads are to commemorate the Publix tile murals. For more photos and information, you can read my post about the Publix tile murals here.

The second Wal*Mart era cart corral sign I have a photo of from this location is this one advertising the Pharmacy, with it's bottom third totally faded.

It's been 4 months since the closing of the Palm Bay Kmart, so I thought it was about time for a photo update. Still nothing new going on here and the building is still sitting empty, and the property is still under the ownership of Sears Holdings, LLC. The Publix rumors are still going around, but nothing official yet. It's still hard for me to believe this place has been gone for 4 months already.

Heading inside once again, and all of the shelving for the pharmacy department has been removed, with this area now being used to sell lawn chairs and other garden things. The garden center has been closed off at this point, which is why all this stuff is here now. Whatever medicines were left are now on random shelves in the center of the store. You can compare this area to earlier times here.

This is one random photo I took a few months back before it was announced this store was set to close. I saw the umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, which I thought was unusual, and decided it was photo worthy.

Damaged and forlorn, this old Publix basket sits at the bottom of a stack at Molly Mutt Thrift Store in Palm Bay, FL. It must be pretty old, I've never seen anything even close to this at an operating Publix. Early 00s if not older?

This beauty sat on the sign for quite a while alternately scolding and singing for me.

Looking into the now closed off interior portion of the former garden center. I never got a photo of this while it was still open. This store's garden center was unusually long and narrow, running the entire length of the left side of the store.

Now time to begin the 8/26/14 set of Kmart closing photos, taken approx. one month after the store closing began. In case this photo looks familiar, this is the original version of the manipulated photo I uploaded the day this store closed, which you can see here. This is one of the better photos I have of the exterior of this store, most of which come out glared, blurry, or partially blocked by something.

And after 48 straight days of uploads (excluding weekends) and uploading 203 photos of this place, we have finally made it to the last photo chronicling the closing of the Palm Bay Kmart, showing the store empty and lifeless. Thanks everyone for following the closing of this store on flickr. I'll be posting a few Kmart memorabilia photos tomorrow, and then I promise I will move on to something else for a while!

Also, I have made a special set for all of my Palm Bay Kmart closing photos called "The Closing of a Kmart - A Photo Chronicle" - which you can see here if you want to look over any of my photos of this store from the last few weeks.

The former main entrance. All the doors and windows were sealed up good with those hurricane shutters, so unfortunately no peeks inside. And sorry about that slight sun glare here. I have a better photo of this area that I'll be posting on Wednesday.

So it has finally come, the final day of the Palm Bay Kmart, two months in the making. While that final day really came over a month ago, it just now will be coming to the Albertsons Florida Blog on flickr. Enjoy these last few photos of store #7310 while it was still open, and let's head back outside...

On a side note, this is the first time I've seen a store correct the grammar on their countdown signs for the last day. Usually most places leave the 's' in days, however they chopped it out of all of their signs here.

Old garbage can holders from the former KCafe.

After the previous night's disappointment and not checking all the camera settings before I started shooting I braved the mosquitos a second time and got eaten alive again! I managed to get some much better shots and a few had meteorites but they were super faint. There is a faint meteor trail in this shot. Right along the top edge and about a 3rd of the way in from the left.

This is the last time that big red K will look over Brevard County. Brevard had 7 Kmart stores at one time, although over the last 20 years that number has now crept to zero. In 24 hours that sign will be sent off to the dump to rot away. It's strange that they took down their big 'Store Closing' banner so early here. The last few trips I took here it wasn't hanging up either. You can see the banner in this very first photo I took from the first day I started covering the closing: flic.kr/p/ooU4h6

Today is dedicated to some of the more interesting fixtures I saw while poking around the fixture sale on 8/21/14 at the now closed Palm Bay, FL Kmart store.

First up is this old photo center counter, which looks like it's been sitting around in hiding somewhere for many years, probably since Kmart removed the 1 Hour Photo desks in the early 2000's.

Inside the garden center's outdoor area. What you see is all that was left of the plants when I was here. There wasn't much in the indoor part of the garden center either, but I didn't get a photo of that because the bored cashier in there kept watching what I was doing!

The alcove in the back left corner was the only part of the store closed off so far. This was originally where the hardware department and housewares department overflow were located.

The checkout lanes all cleared out of candy and magazines. I can't remember if it was this visit or my visit on the last day, but I saw a lady waiting in line with a cart filled with all the candy bars from the checkout lanes. I'd like to know if she ran a store and was stocking up on discounted merchandise, or if she just had a really big sweet tooth!

A completely empty aisle in the sporting goods department - a sight that will become more common in the coming weeks here. It's depressing to see this store looking this way.

Well, that finishes up my Palm Bay Kmart closing photos from 8/1/14. I'll probably hold off on starting the 8/10 set of photos until after Restaurant Week 2014, but I'll see how I feel over the weekend. Either way, tune in Monday (probably in the evening sometime) for the beginning of Restaurant Week - I have some really great places to share with you!

Palm Cinema 10

160 Malabar Road SW, Palm Bay, FL - Palm Bay West Shopping Center

There's a pretty good reason why this movie theater just says 'Theatres' on the front. This place has changed hands so many times over the years I couldn't even tell you who was the original tenant! That generic sign keeps the cost down when someone new attempts to open up here. Currently, this is home to Palm Cinema, which opened earlier in 2015, and is one of those movie theaters that plays previously run movies for only a dollar or two, making it a popular hangout place. Previously, this was the Palm Bay Dollar Movies, which opened in 2010 and closed in 2014, and before that it was Nova Cinema. I can't find anything prior to Nova, but I'm pretty sure it was another one or two movie theaters before that from what I've heard from others about this place. (UPDATE 4/16/15: I believe this was originally Cobb Cinema Palm Bay 10 after looking through some old newspapers I recently acquired, one of three Cobb Cinema locations in South Brevard at the time).

Publix #215

4711 Babcock Street NE, Palm Bay, FL – Palm Bay Center

Opened 1979. Remodeled and expanded in the mid-1990’s.

I figured it was finally time for us to take a tour of a Publix store, especially after spending so much time on Winn-Dixie. For the next few weeks I'll be uploading my photos of this older Publix store. A few weeks ago I uploaded photos of this store's tile murals when my post A Picture's Worth a Thousand Tiles went live on my website. You can see those tile murals in the background of this photo. Also, this Publix is located in the same shopping center as this Kmart, which was featured here way back in the beginning of my time on Flickr.

The exterior of this store is a modified version of Publix's 70's look, which was upgraded and modernized when this store was remodeled around 1995-ish. During that time, an addition was added onto the right side of this store where a piece of the shopping center was torn down. We'll see plenty of evidence of this addition when we go inside...

You must act now! The Palm Bay Kmart only has four days left before the doors close for good (as of when this photo was taken)! The end of the Palm Bay Kmart is nearing as we begin the 9/4/14 set of Kmart closing photos. This little sign was spotted in the parking lot of the store, although there were a few others of these I saw floating around on some of the nearby street corners.

More Emptiness, which is slowly swallowing the whole store...This is the void of what used to be home to seasonal, toys, hardware, and part of the housewares and food departments. With all the shelves starting to come down, you can really feel just how big this store is. It's hard to believe that just a month ago everything was operating like normal here...
