Fondation Beyeler Basel-Palimpsest by Doris Salcedo
With her installation "Palimpsest" in the Fondation Beyeler, the Colombian artist Doris Salcedo commemorates the fate of migrants. Water slowly seeps out of the floor of the exhibition room, forming letters and forming names. After a few seconds, the bright stone slabs pick up the drops again, little by little, until every single letter has disappeared. Every name belongs to a person, to a migrant whose flight across the sea ended fatally.
Door of Church of Agios Konstantinos, Paros. The church is built on the ruins of an ancient citadel. In early Byzantine days, the citadel was rebuilt out of the ancient marble. The marble around the modern door was re-carved at that time.

Palimpsest • \PAL-imp-sest\ • noun = Multiple Layers.
The Architectural History revealed when a building is destroyed, removed or altered,
exposing all of the painted surfaces, wall textures, bricked in windows & doorways.
Humans are builders.
And-
"REAL ESTATE" is a finite reality (Commodity).
Quite often what one man builds - another man tears down
....and often in the process reveals something unique
about the past occupants.
What was there........?
Architects imply Palimpsest as a ghost—an image of what once was.
In the built environment, this occurs somewhat often.
Whenever spaces are shuffled, rebuilt, or remodeled, shadows remain.
Tarred rooflines remain on the sides of a building long after the neighboring structure
has been demolished;
Demolished Stairs, leave an imprint of where the painted wall surface stopped.
Dust lines recall a relocated appliance.
Ancient ruins speak volumes of their former wholeness.
Palimpsests can inform us, archaeologically, of the realities of the built past.
Cutler Botanic Garden (3.5 acres) is a botanical garden located at 840 Front Street, Binghamton, New York. It is open daily, without charge.
The garden was established by Miss Frances Cutler, who donated land to the Cornell University Cooperative Extension. In 1978 the idea began for a botanical garden, and the garden opened to the public in 1979.
Today the Garden is outdoor classroom for teaching horticulture and environmentalism, as well as a display garden for All-American Selections.
Ghost sign on the side of a building in Ashland, Oregon. This sign looks like it was painted over a couple of times. It looks like it might have said "Grocery" but that's all I can make out.

My photographs are part of my way of thinking about and imagining spaces and light, of pondering and approaching an idea. In this case, the photographs generate a way of looking at a structure that exists only in order to provoke a sensorial and intellectual experience.
