The Kuthodaw Pagoda (Pagoda of Royal Merit) is a complex completed in 1868 in the Myanmar city of Mandalay. It consists of 729 stupas in the form of pavilion-like temples, each containing a white marble slab with Burmese script.

The Pali Canon, the life and teachings of Buddha, is inscribed on the marble slabs. The original gilded letters are now only colored black. The pagoda is also called "The largest book in the world" because of this extensive representation. Before the creation of this complex, the texts were mainly written down on palm leaves or wood. The inscriptions have been included by UNESCO in the list of World Documentary Heritage.

In the center of the complex there is also the gilded Maha Lawka Marazein Pagoda, which was built as early as 1857 according to the plans of the Shwezigon Pagoda.

Na Pali Coast is 15 miles of rugged coastline along the North-Western shore of Kauai. Much of it is inaccessible either by land or by boat. There are several beaches where deep valleys meet the sea, among them Kalalau beach of the hippie fame. This image is taken from the cruise boat in the worst possible light, but it still looks impressive to me.

Hilina Pali is a cliff approximately 2,282 ft (695.6 m) in elevation and over 12 miles (19.3 km) long. It's about as far as you can drive into the remote areas of Volcanos National Park, and well worth the trip. Below the cliff is part of the Ka'ū desert and the Pacific Ocean, and you can hike or backpack through this rugged and desolate area. Bring rain gear, sunscreen, sun glasses, a hat and plenty of water!

Happy Thursday! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

The fascinating landscape of Kauai's Nā Pali Coast State Park - definitely worth a helicopter tour.

This is the Kalalau Valley, one of the many awesome views we had of the Na Pali Coast on the north side of Kauai. It's a long hike but these views start as soon as you hit the trail.

West Maui Mountains

Koʻolau Range is a name given to the dormant fragmented remnant of the eastern or windward shield volcano of the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu. It is not a 'mountain range' in the normal sense, because it was formed as a single mountain called the Koʻolau Volcano (koʻolau means "windward" in Hawaiian). What remains of Koʻolau is the western half of the original volcano that was destroyed in prehistoric times when the entire eastern half—including much of the summit caldera—slid cataclysmically into the Pacific Ocean. Remains of this ancient volcano lie as massive fragments strewn nearly 100 miles over the ocean floor to the northeast of Oʻahu. Kāneʻohe Bay is what remains of the ancient volcano's summit caldera after the slide. The modern Koʻolau mountain forms Oʻahu's windward coast and rises behind the leeward coast city of Honolulu — on its leeward slopes and valleys are located most of Honolulu's residential neighborhoods. The remaining summit of the tallest peak, Puʻu Kōnāhuanui is approximately 3,100 ft tall.

The Ko‘olau Range Pali was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972 and covers an area of 565 acres that is split between private and state ownership.

Spanning 17 miles (27 km) along Kauaʻi's North Shore, the Nā Pali Coast is a sacred place for native Hawaiians. The rugged coastline features towering emerald-green cliffs that rise dramatically from the ocean, creating a stunning panorama. I was fortunate to have good weather when I sailed along this amazing landscape.

The Nā Pali Cliffs reach up to 1220 meters (4000 feet) in height and were sculpted by millions of years of erosion. The name "Na Pali" means "the cliffs" in Hawaiian and are only accessible via challenging hikes or by boat. IMHO, the cliffs are the most beautiful landscapes in the entire Hawaiian Islands.

The Na Pali Coast is so incredible to behold that photos cannot do it justice.

Pali da casada are easy to spot as they’re brightly colored, often painted with a spiral pattern like a barbershop pole, and usually clustered at the water door or side door to palaces, offices or hotels along the canals of Venice. Unlike the plain paline though, pali are not mooring poles. They were originally designed to help gondoliers recognize houses, salons and casinos and, at night, would have had an oil lamp on the top to illuminate the palina mooring point. Today the oil lamp is long gone, but many pali are still topped off by a cappellozzo, a stylized, carved representation of a flame. ~L'Italo-Americano

What is Pali Puka? Puka in Hawaiian (so I'm told) means hole. Along the ridge of the mountain there is a hole that allows views to the windward side of the island, including Kaneohe and Kaneohe bay. Truly spectacular!

Mystical Na Pali coastline from Ke'e Beach. Waning moonlight.

The fresh looking lava flows came from the Mauna Ulu eruption and flowed over the Hōlei Pali, a ~1300 foot (~400 m) high escarpment along the Hilina fault system in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. The young flows date between 1969 and 1974 and cover older flows that also came down the escarpment. These young basalt flows form a chaos of pahoehoe and a'a textures. The Chain of Craters Road switchbacks down the escarpment. This photo was taken from the road near the Pu'u Loa parking lot.

The rugged, sheer cliffs of the Na Pali Coast, dropping straight down, northwest coast of Kauai, Hawaii. This was a challenging shot on the water, but the catamaran was pretty stable and the captain slowed down, almost to a standstill, at these extra special places.

As the boat sailed away the clouds were descending upon the cliffs and the light was starting to hit them nicely. I wish I could have ordered it to stay longer! I'm just going to have to charter my own some day.

One of the most beautiful places on earth - the Na Pali coast on Kauai.

Another view of the rugged Na Pali coast on Kauai, Hawaii.

Along with the amazing coastal formations we had the thrill of whale watching, at one point we witnessed a mother and calf breaching at the same time. As far as nature encounters go this is at the top of my experiences, it was spectacular. It was actually one of the occasions I was glad I did not have my proper camera and long lens with me as it allowed me to experience the spectacle rather than worrying about capturing it for later. As there were so many breaching episodes I would have missed so much while I looked through the camera trying to get that perfect shot.
