It’s a long weekend this week so we spent a day in Khao Yai National Park. I met this group of birdwatchers shooting and filming ‘great hornbills’. Khao Yai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the oldest and one of the country’s largest parks which is located only a few hours drive from Bangkok or Pathum Thani. This park is home to some 300 or more migrants and residents species of birds. It is a large open grassland in the centre which offer great opportunities for observing birds that frequent the forest edge.
I had a chance to talk to one of the birdwatchers. He showed me the stunning photos taken from his massive telephoto lens which is common for wildlife birdwatchers. I think birdwatching is important as they provide huge amount of data to conservation researchers. Also, it provides an intimate connection between people and our natural environment which will lead to better protection of our wildlife.

Haew Narok is the largest waterfall in Khao Yai National Park with over a 150-metre-high cliff draped in jungle. The name directly translates to Cliff of Hell. There were many reported cases of elephants falling to death. The waterfall is located deep in a jungle with only one one-kilometer road to reach from the main road of the park.
At Haew Suwat Waterfall, water plunges down double 20 metre drops into a large pool below with a large viewing area made up of rocks. There is a large cliff to one side which makes interesting viewing as locals place small sticks there as a gesture to nature, in the hope that it never collapses. The waterfall is best viewed during the rainy season but water flows throughout the year. Haew Suwat Waterfall is easily accessible, around 12 km from the visitor center and a 5 minute walk from a large car park reached by a paved road with plenty of signposts.

The name is directly translated to Cliff of Hell Waterfall. There were many reported cases of elephants falling off the cliff to death due to the strong current of the waterfall. The park has put up big stone fences around the cliff to prevent elephants wandering to the point of danger. Not only the fall is hell, also the path. I was told by a gatekeeper that there are 200 steps to reach the waterfall. At the beginning of the trail there was a sign saying 900 metre to the fall. I was completely at ease considering how easy it looked. Have I been so wrong, the last 100 metre was a pure hell of steep steps. Way down was tough and the way up made me want to have a heart attack!

The giant white marble Buddha of Wat Thep Phitak Punnaram in Muak Lek, Amphoe Pakchong, Changwat Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, can be seen from miles.
It can be found on route 2220 off Highway 2 on the Bangkok - Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat) road. I got here in the late afternoon with the setting sun to my right, but there was a lot of mist and haze around, so visibility was not 100%.
Never say goodbye. Lets celebrate and dance with this lovely lively song ...
Is it lively sunset... ?
Wish the sun stay for a bit longer.

I walked along wide meadow. Its dried and full of yellow grass and rather hilly. Along that wide space, I feel so free. Far away, my friends talked with his friend but I and his daughter walked together. She said its boring so we walked together with cameras. I took photos of tiny flowers, grass and then she started to feel excited with new explore. We shared something new we found through cameras. We cherished sunset together and gentle wind was blowing times to times . Just one little lovely day. Only one day trip but I got number of photos, own faverites
Tamarind tree here has no leaves as it is summer and it was on the hill slope far from river stream. Now I just see that silhuette of tamarind fruit and branches is quite lovely.

I originally posted an image of this Buddha in October last year, but this version was shot in the late morning two months ago following an early start on a great day out with DanielKHC, Philippe C. and Maxsimus.
I've the best of intentions to climb the several hundred stairs and actually get to the base of the Buddha, for I'm sure the view from there must be fantastic. So far my intentions haven't materialised into action!

Today is Valentine day 2006. Instead of roses, I select the love fishes to celebrate this day with Flickr member. This fish,in Japan, is called "Koi" which means Love. It's quite difficult to take photo of fast moving fishes with sunlight in shade. Photo is taken at Chok Chai farm house, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
To take this shot, I inclined more than half body over the pond and my friend just held my hand preventing me falling down to the pond. However, I dropped skylight filter into the water, but got it back later.
Which love fish do you like ?
. . or water of life, the literal translation from the Scots Gaelic word from which the word "whisky" is derived (Latin: aqua vitae).
Malt whisky is the ancient hard liquor of Scotland. It is produced from an ale made of malted barley and water, fermented by the addition of yeast. It is then distilled in a copper pot-still, a process that has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. (There is no need for change, given the quality of the product, and modern malt distillers often go to great lengths to avoid change in their stills, for fear that any alteration may affect the quality of the spirit.)
My weekend is almost over, and my preferred uisgubeatha is a Laphroaig of which I shall have a couple of glasses this evening.
May you enjoy what's left of your weekend, and I hope you have a great week ahead of you.
Near to Thailand's oldest National Park, Khao Yai, is this 'theme-park' development totally out of sync with its environement. Nevermind, around 70% of the 'Tuscan' $500,000 villas are sold! www.theeyrie-khaoyai.com/index.php

A giant statue of Buddha against a forested hill near our local town. There are many depictions of Buddha in the East, but this seems to be the most popular one in Thailand.
The local people refer to this statue as “Luang Por Khao”, which could be loosely translated as the “spiritual guide from the mountain”. This Buddha statue belongs to the Wat Theppitak Punaram temple at the base of the hill. The different measurements of the Buddha holds spiritual significance: The elevation of the statue of 112 meters or 56 Thai Wa above ground level refers to the 56 goodnesses of Buddhism. The total of 1,250 steps of the two paths left and right leading uphill to the statue signify the number of disciples of Buddha who assembled on Maka Buja Day without prior notice. The height of the statue of 45 meters means the number of years Buddha spent in teaching the people after he had attained enlightenment.

I spent the whole day on a daytrip to the wild national park Khao-Yai in the Pak Chong district of Thailand. Or to be more accurate: I spent most of the day on my way to and from the national park =)
It was a long trip, but seeing a rainforest in real life really lets you forget about the trip within a second.
You can see more photos and the whole story over on !

Our guide found this gorgeous oriental whip-snake up in a tree. It was incredibly long and thin, perfect for sinuously gliding through the twigs and leaves hunting for lizards.

This is a female olive-backed sunbird. The male has a glorious iridescent blue breast, but unfortunately only the female came close. These small birds use their curved beak to lap nectar from flowers, as this one was in an urban park in Pak Chong.
