a straight on portrait, where I tried a more painterly look.

I really love recreating some of my photos! The blend of colors can be so much fun. While this is not for photography purists, my work will probably never be in that realm for long, as I prefer art.

When I look at a photo like this, I think, "what is it missing that it needs?" Often, it's nothing. If there are enough colors, and good light, it doesn't need too much to bring it out. This pic was pretty, but didn't really say much. I chose to add some colors into the petals and to mix it up a little, using Gooify, which can be a real pain in the neck, but can achieve some fantaastic results. That is what gives this the oil paint look that it has.

Sign painter, Kenji Nakayama, wth the large orange Converse bilboard he painted on the side of a house in Olive Square, Somerville, MA.

Kenji Nakayama was born in Tomokomai on the island of Hokkaido, Japan in 1979. A mechanical engineer by education, Kenji made a significant life change in 2004 with a move to Boston, Massachusetts to study traditional sign painting and to dedicate his time and energy to art-making. Kenji's diverse practice ranges from careful pinstriping and gilded lettering to hand-cut, multi-layered stencil paintings. Each intricately carved stencil painting is a unique manifestation of documenting and responding to the environment surrounding him, and often takes months to complete. His work serves as a personal diary of experience and influence, and his process can be described as a balance between meditation and highly-trained craftsmanship. Music, solitude, humor, motorcycles, and urban decay serve as direct sources of inspiration.

Kenji's work has been exhibited widely across the US and abroad in numerous solo and group exhibitions. He attended a mechanical institute from 1998-2002 in Tokyo, and studied traditional sign painting at Butera School of Arts 2004-2006 in Boston. Kenji also works as a footwear designer during the day. He currently lives and works in Boston.

Nakayama has painted signs for Boston and Cambridge businesses including Hungry Mother restaurant and Hour Glass in Cambridge, MA and Beautiful Cuts in Alston, MA.

K. C. Smith

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Keith Cornock (K.C.) Smith was a Canadian artist.

Born in Daupin, Manitoba in 1924, Smith was raised in Depression era British Columbia. He became a member of the early environmental group the League of Conservationists, explored the Coast Mountains and the Rockies, worked as a camp cook for a trail guide outfit and later as a park naturalist at Wasa Lake Provincial Park.

During the Second World War Smith served in the Canadian Navy. When the war ended, he found a job as an apprentice sign painter, later working throughout the British Columbia interior. Later, he worked painting movie marquees. One of his most memorable paintings was a 12-foot high image of Orson Welles at the Studio Theatre in Vancouver, British Columbia.[1]

In the 1950s, Smith travelled the western USA, eventually working as a journeyman sign painter in Laguna Beach, California. In 1952, he married Arlene Legault and began painting formally. They raised their sons (Mike and Blake) and a daughter (Jamie).

Smith led workshops and mentored artists such as Cameron Bird and Karen Hershey.[2] His circle of friends included painters Carl Rungius, Nicholas de Grandmaison and sculptor Nicholas Scriver.[3]

Smith was adamant that painting was about technique and feeling as much as subject; that brushwork was as important as composition.[4] The bulk of his artwork comprised oil paintings and pencil sketches.

Smith lived in and near Cranbrook, B.C. through the 1970s and 80s. He later moved to Vancouver and then to Qualicum Beach where he lived and painted until his death in July, 2000.
