The Fuente Dorada (Golden Fountain) Square, in the city centre and shaped roughly as a triangle, began to take shape in the 13th Century, at the same time as Market Square (today the Main Square). In 1603, its interior area was known as "'The Old Hen House", perhaps because it was used to sell already dead poultry. Later it was called the Plazuela de Fuente Dorada. The houses that make up its outline were given different names, according to their trades: Lorigueros sold the breastplates; Espadería, sold swords; and Lancería traded with spears. Across the street we find Guarnicioneros and Mercaderes Streets. However, in the 17th Century they were known by the locals as Fuente Dorada. The oldest reference to the Argales fountain or Fuente Dorada is written in one of Miguel de Cervantes’s novels: La Ilustre Fregona. In that book Fuente Dorada is praised for its old age and the quality of its waters. Pedro de la Bárcena started the construction of this old fountain in 1616, supervised by Diego de Praves, master builder of the city. There is insufficient data on what Fuente Dorada was like originally, but in 1725 Ventura Pérez said: "... they took off a bronze ball with its needle and thy put stone dolphins instead. They also placed the statue of Spring on a flowerpot. It was a very golden and a boy decapitated the statue by throwing a rock at it, and it was never replaced, so today it is called the Headless Spring Fountain”. In 1840, after several renovations, they placed a statue of Apollo, only to rebuild Fuente Dorada in 1876. They shaped it as a column decorated with golden motifs. In 1949 a sculpture was installed, to which they gave the nickname 'Don Purpurino', because it was painted with glitter. Afterwards they changed it for an enormous column, which now stands in the centre of Trinity Square. In 1997 the city of Valldolid commisioned the architect Fernández González Poncio with the last renovation of Fuente Dorada Square; he designed a completely new square. It has various sculptures and inscriptions of all the old guilds of Valladolid: potters, washers, water carriers, lancers, silversmiths... these figures alternate with representations of the seasons; Spring looks towards Teresa Gil street and, following the movement of the sun, we have the figures of Summer, Autumn and Winter. Today, this square continues to be an important and busy commercial area.

The June challenge was to be inspired by the friendship star block, and to "read" one color of the spectrum. Project is 20" square.

After crazy-piecing the center star, I set it off from the Cherrywood background with a skinny mini strip in turquoise/orange batik. I echo-quilted all around the star to create "channels" which I filled with text printed on transfer artist paper (TAP) and applied with heat.

The words are all descriptions that fit one or more of my friends and demonstrates the depth and breadth of their interests and truly unique personalities. (I'll let them each search and guess which fit them!)

The TAP transfers polymer background around your image - and with the text it created ghost squares around the text. To downplay those text boxes, I brushed silver fabric paint with glitter over the entire "channel" that contained text, focusing extra paint in the areas with no polymer ghost to even things out. (Glitter doesn't photograph well, so you'll have to trust me that it's cooler than it looks here.)

I then added a bunch more rows of quilting stitches in white, orange, black, and even a big-stitch machine application of #8 perle cotton in turquoise.

I bound the quilt with a faux piped binding to add another skinny bit of turquoise - and had EPIC (and uncharacteristic) problems with my machine binding resulting in much ripping, replacing, inserting, and reworking. The third time was certainly the charm!

I live and quilt in Lodi WI.

~ Story ~

Here is my Believix Musa doll. I got her in July 2012 from Toys R Us. She was the third one I got from this collection.

~ Review ~

I was somewhat disappointed with this line because of its lack of detail and cheap fabrics. However, I'll first state what I like about this doll. I like her face and make-up (I especially love sparkly make-up), and I also like her hair style which is accurate for the most part. Another thing that may be small but still very important, is that her pants go down to her knees, as the Witty Toys Believix Musa's pants didn't quite reach her knees. Another thing I like about this doll is that her eyebrows are a bluish color instead of brown. Her wings are also very nice. I like that they can flap, and I also like their detail. With the doll being fairly plain, the wings are what stand out the most. Now, here are my woes regarding this doll. Her shirt was very plain and the fabric is cheap. Almost all the fabric of the clothes is cheap. It wears out very easily, even the sparkly pink and purple fabrics. The red taffeta fabric is the worst though. I also wish that this doll's boots had been painted. Then there are the missing accessories: the red hair elastic, headband, gloves and gem on her pants. The neck tie Musa came with was also inaccurate. I also would have liked for the arms on this doll to have been more flexible, as they don't really bend too much. All in all, I do really like this doll, and she is one of my favorites in the line.

~ Customization ~

I added the hair tie, headband necklace, gloves and diamond on her pants, and also painted the boots and added glitter to the red fabric. The hair tie and necklace are not really meant to come off, as they are glued on. The headband is attached by thread, and also is not really meant to come off. The gloves can be removed, but it'd be frustrating to get them back on. I drowned the red fabric in glitter glue, hopefully to prevent further wear. The boots were painted with white acrylic paint with glitter over top. I had to replace the pink fabric on her top because it faded. It was replaced with new fabric and a more show accurate spaghetti strap. This customization took me a long time. Before I even took this picture I had to add another layer of glitter glue to her shirt to make it look better.

~ Final Thoughts ~

I like this doll a lot, and part of it is because of the customization I did. If she were the same as when I got her, I probably wouldn't like her this much. I would have to say that out of all the Believix girls, Musa's customization is my second best, with Aisha's being the one that turned best. Strangely enough, I wouldn't really recommend this doll to young children, because I don't think it will hold up during rough play. This doll is more suited for display.
