Watercolor on wood. This is a small wooden puzzle, that consists of six pieces. All handmade and hand painted as you can see the bleeding of the paint into the wood around the edges. I purchased this in England in 1982, and it’s signed by the artist. The entire piece measures 5-3/4” T X 3-3/4” W. Area photographed is 1-3/4” T X 2-1/2” W. HMM!
There were two metal grates in the yard when we moved here- heavy things that I drag around somewhere new from time to time. Today, I decided they needed some splashes of color! It's how I am. :)
I've no idea what is going on here. Silage bales with numbers - the numbers on one side of the bale are different from the numbers on the other side of the same bale.
Anybody have any idea what this is about?

#9 "It's Getting Hot in Here" Puzzle - This hand painted puzzle is a little prayer of sorts for the melting arctic ice. If you live in temperate parts of the Earth it is sometimes hard to see much change in the environment. Global Warming sounds alarmist and blown out of proportion and there is much contradictory evidence. If you go to the extremes of the planet however, to the poles - the effects seem much more obvious. Entire ecosystems are rapidly disappearing at an alarming rate. Once they are gone, they will never come back quite the same.

This was taken in Arizona at the Wupatki National Monument. It was built 800 years ago by the Ancient Pueblo people. I took this picture looking out towards the painted desert from one of the jagged window openings.
Some of the last of the stepped waterfalls for a good while... I'm really happy with the 'terracotta' variation. Several of these will be available on Monday June 25th at www.chrisyates.net/store/puzz.html

Title: Autism Awareness
Theme: Education
Materials: Muslin, fabric paint and sharpie markers.
Did you enjoy this project? The students loved working on the project, researching planets and the rocket it will go on as well as finding out about NASA.
About: We picked the theme of Autism Awareness because the students wanted to paint puzzle pieces and we thought it would be an important topic to discuss.

These two jigsaws are from Terry Walters' collection received in the Puzzle Parley Pagey Elliott Exchanges of 2012 & 2016, which he took part in.
Left: 2016 Pagey Elliott Exchange: Carol Barnard Ottenberg 73pc Native Sun, 9in round. The jigsaw was cut on a Delta Rockwell saw from 5-ply Baltic Birch. The image is by Seattle-area artist Barry Herem, a mask designed in the style of Kwakwaka'wakw culture of British Columbia. Carol has signed it on the paddle - the only figural, whose shape varies across the copies made for the Exchange. Some are regular, some have a notch and some are sharply pointed. Sadly there is a piece missing. The box lid was not tightly fitting and was slightly open in the plstic sack when I picked the jigsaws up. I haven't been able to find the piece in my house, my car or in between - the chances are that it was lost at Terry's house.
Right: 2012 Pagey Elliott Exchange: Pixels Puzzles 83pc Creative Abstract no2012-201, 7x5in. This was cut by Deb Dana. Here is an extract from John Stokes's review of her puzzle, in his write-up of the event:
"Deb Dana comes from a family where assembling puzzles has been a common form of entertainment. Around 10 years ago she decided to design a family collage for a jigsaw puzzle. She experimented cutting it herself and ended up contracting it out to Melinda Shebell of Jardin Puzzles. After that her interest in making wooden jigsaw puzzles expanded to where she is now. While she has sold some puzzles, she has made them for friends and those who enjoy them.
Her recent puzzles have been in her "Creative Abstract" series. She wrote about this puzzle "When I began cutting for the exchange, I had two goals: lots of color and swirls (inspired by your creative style). With regard to the piece color, I initially did try to keep the pieces very randomized. However, in the latter group of puzzles, I actually reduced the number of colors I was using to obtain a different effect. In all puzzles, the "swirled" pieces were left untreated in an attempt to highlight them more." And later .... "It appears as though you received one of the first puzzles I cut for the Parley this year. If I had my druthers, I would have preferred you received one of the others but such is life." Her later puzzles in the Exchange set had a greater diversity of "swirls" and interestingly, some rules about how the swirls were cut (figure eight / elongated / symmetric / clockwise / counterclockwise), and some planning on their locations.
The wood is a 3-ply with a fairly thick core and a thin veneer on each side. The wood is veneered by my request through a local cabinet maker in town. I used an ink based dye for the colors. The ink used for this puzzle is much thinner than the spray paint I used for my painted puzzle, the pieces retain their "wood" feel. Also, the edges were left uncolored.
The puzzle was a nice puzzle to assemble - not too easy and not overwhelming. Having the pieces colored on both sides certainly added to the challenge. The connectors are a mixed of curl and knob with some much larger artistic "swirls" included."
As there was a diversity of puzzles which Deb made for the Parley with the later ones being more elaborately cut and colored (the later one has 5 colors while the earlier one had 4), I'm including a picture of a later Exchange puzzle here for the record. (John reviewed no219)

More Impossible Object bafflers!!! This have been a very satisfying series - now if I can only figure out how to translate these crazy shaded-angle concepts into multi-levels without my brain exploding...
This puzzle will go on sale tomorrow at 4pm Mountain Time: www.chrisyates.net/store/puzz.html

A jigsaw from Terry Walters' collection received in the Puzzle Parley Pagey Elliott Exchanges of 2012, which he took part in.
This abstract jigsaw is two-sided and effectively line-cut - each piece has been stained/painted the same colour on the top and bottom faces, with the edge left clear. The grain is still sometimes visible - I presume this is deliberate on Deb's part. When I tipped the pieces out it was delightful to see so many spirals. I started with the large blue shapes with clear spirals within them and initially assumed that it was a '4-colour-map problem' so that pieces of the same colour wouldn't touch each other. As you can see that rule breaks down sometimes. It was quite slow going for such a small puzzle - having to keep flipping sections in reality or my head to check for a match. The two pieces taken out have been flipped to show the 'underside'.

His large jigsaws remain superb, but are now sold in the plain boxes so these are now collectors pieces. Genest still produces these unpainted jigsaws for you to customise (see his etsy shop).
BCD Mtg 2016 - I took one of my two large jigsaws by Genest Le Colimacon along to the BCD meeting so that members could see the beautiful boxes with an extra hand-painted puzzle in the lid. The smaller puzzles also come in a wooden box but these puzzles are all larger than 1000pc (1000 - 1600pc, although I'm not sure if the two upper ones are additional puzzles or beautifully cut pierced wood with painted background).
The one I took along was the one with the green insert, Le Colimacon Genest 1000pc Tibetan thangka c12x19in. I haven't assembled this jigsaw yet, but you can still see a copy on Genest's 'little market' site (the box is like the ones on the top row).

Half of the progress from work at the BCD Meeting on a new hand-cut jigsaw by Genest Desfosses, Le Colimacon. The jigsaw features interrupted edges, split corners, and careful line-cutting. The 436pc jigsaw measures 21x28cm and it is cut in push-fit style in low density plywood. The image is an advertising poster by Alphonse Mucha, Biscuits Lefevre-Utile. It wasn't finished in the time available, and we managed to slide it onto a mat for me to complete at home.
I was keen to take along some of Genest's work for members to try because another BCD member had written an article about him in the BCD magazine. His interesting cuts and line-cutting precision have certainly been causing a stir on flickr since Billsville Mike posted his first completed jigsaw in Feb 2015. Those who worked on this one at the meeting really enjoyed the experience. A new member, whose previous experience has mainly been in cardboard and interlocking Wentworth jigsaws, decided that push-fit was not yet for her. I remember when I felt like that...
Genest sells through ebay and 'a Little Market' and will undertake commissions. The BCD article mentioned that he had made a jigsaw of the painting 'The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke' by Richard Dadd. (Flickr watchers may remember the 1000pc Pomegranate cardboard version of the Tate Gallery's painting.)
The puzzles that I've seen are mainly in the range 350-550pc, but occasionally larger ones appear of 750-1300pc and are always hotly contested at auction. The very large puzzles are packed in a large wooden casket, with an extra hand painted puzzle set under the lid.

A curiously brown-towned painting, it is full of compelling fantastical detail. I also have a copy of the print and would love to see in detail how Genest tackled the image. (Flickr watchers may remember the 1000pc Pomegranate cardboard version of the Tate Gallery's painting.)
