This is on top of the Sinthan Pass, at a height of 3750m, on National Highway NH-1B. This highway is open only in the summer months. Snow, even in the summer is the biggest attraction for tourists here. This route is an exciting and adventurous alternative to the regular Jammu-Srinagar highway. It connects Kishtwar on the Jammu side to Anantnag on the Kashmir side.
These horses were traveling all the way from Kishtwar to Pahalgam, a distance of 200 km, for the Amarnath yatra, where they would ferry the devotees. Their journey had begun over a month before the opening of the Amarnath pilgrimage.
Sinthan Pass was the first high altitude mountain pass for us. Read more about the Himalayan passes at Mountain Passes we crossed.

A beautiful shot from Kashmir, the heaven on earth, gives a fair idea of the beauty of the place. The tirelessly moving water flowing downstream finding its path along the rocks, boulders and pebbles just like life which continues to move forward despite hurdles. The green vegetation stands along like spectators watching the lovely stream flow by.

The route to Amarnath via Baltal is a straight path, with a steady ascent of 14 km to the Amarnath cave. Though this journey takes just a day, the continuous climb makes it extremely strenuous. For its variety and beauty, we highly recommend the route via Pahalgam for the Amarnath yatra.

Words always fall short in describing the beauty of Kashmir. This shot captures a view of the famous 'Betaab' valley named after a film of the same name having been shot here. The sky is crisp blue and white clouds look so well defined over the mountains covered in pine trees and grass with a stream flowing on its path. The shot seems like a part of heaven!

A buzzing market around the actual cave area of Amarnath belies its height of almost 13800 feet. The locals have set up shops where you can buy the prasad and deposit your luggage (bags or gadgets are not allowed inside the cave). They also provide hot water if one wants to bathe before darshan. Or a bed for a short nap. Registrations for the Amarnath Yatra of 2015 are now open.

A little Kashmiri girl from a Govt. High School in Laripora Kalan (Pahalgam), wearing a black hijab, resting her head on a wooden railing outside her class, eyes innocent and gleaming, face looking so happy, lips ready to smile, her roses and peaches complexion. Special permission was taken from the school administration to shoot these children while studying, playing and other school activities. It turned out to be such a pleasure shooting such enthusiastic children and interacting with them. More photos coming soon!

These women were most likely going to the nearest vegetable market to sale their products. All of them were carrying the similar items. After managing household work they are on the way to sell their agricultural produces. Generally rural Indian women are devoting 20% more time than men.

In memory of those killed in the dastardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Kashmir yesterday. We were there in beautiful Kashmir valley barely a month ago and we had come back with such wonderful memories. Those memories will now always be tarnished by this horrific incident.
When will human beings stop needlessly killing other innocent human beings ? When will those behind the guns realize that they are just pawns in the games played by corrupt and unscrupulous people in power? Why do we have to hate each other in the name of religion and race?? Why can't we simply live in peace??????

Mamal Temple or Mamaleshwar Temple is a Hindu temple, located in Pahalgam town in Kashmir Valley. It is situated on the banks of Lidder River at an elevation of 2,200 metres (7,200 ft). According to legend, this is the temple where Ganesha was placed as door keeper by Parvati, not allowing anyone to enter the premises without her permission. This is the place where Shiva cut the head of Ganesha and gave him an elephant head.
There are 2 idols inside the temple. One is a Shiva Linga at the center of the temple and a small two face idol of Nandi on the right corner. Mam Mal means don't go, and thus it is also known as Mammal temple.
This temple was constructed around 400 AD (1,600 years ago) and was reconstructed and opened for worship in the medieval period. The Rajatarangini refers to a temple called Mammesvara and recorded its decoration with a golden kalasa at its top by king Jayasimha.

While on an evening stroll along the Lidder river bank saw this man taking his herd of sheep back home after taking them for grazing in the green pastures of Pahalgam. Seeing me with my camera, he stopped to look at me a couple of times while I was capturing his emotions in my camera. He looks visibly tired as the day comes to an end and he has to walk back his sheep home. Accompanying him were his two dogs, who were helping him keep the sheep from straying.

Hajan Valley, also called Hagen Valley, is situated at a distance of 15 km (9.3 mi) from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Valley is towards northeast of Pahalgam and falls between Pahalgam and Chandanwadi and is en route Amarnath Temple Yatra. The valley surrounded by lush green meadows, snow clad mountains and covered with dense vegetation.
Hajan Valley, which is a part of Pahalgam area – one of the several sub-valleys of Kashmir Valley came into existence during the post geosynclinal stage of the development of the Himalayas. Betaab Valley lies between the two Himalayan Ranges – Pir Panjal and Zanskar.
The valley got its other name from the Sunny Deol-Amrita Singh hit debut film Betaab (1983).
Betab Valley is a very popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. Betaab Valley is also a favorite campsite of travelers as it also serves as a base camp for trekking and further exploration of the mountains. The valley is a walk-able distance from Pahalgam. The crystal clear and chilly water of the stream bubbling down from the snowy hills is a delight; locals here drink this water too. Baisaran and Tulian Lake are few nearby attractions that can be visited.
