The Continental Divide is the main hydrological divide of the Americas. It runs the full length of North and South America and separates the Atlantic and Pacific watersheds, sending all water to the west toward the Pacific Ocean and all water east toward the Atlantic Ocean.

The San Juan Mountain Range in southwestern Colorado is the largest mountain range in the state and contains some of the highest summits in the continental US. The Continental Divide Trail crosses Wolf Creek Pass in the San Juan Range. These mountains have the highest snowfall levels in the state due to moisture blown in from the Pacific Ocean. The annual snowfall average is about 400 inches (10 m) but in some years it exceeds 600 inches (15 m).

Wolf Creek is a stream in the mountains of southwest Colorado for which the Wolf Creek Pass is named. The pass is very steep on both sides (6.8% grade) and can be dangerous in winter but has beautiful views all year. When descending the west side of the pass, there are spectacular views of the scenic Wolf Creek Valley floor and the San Juan River.

It's not the best landscape but the area is so beautiful I had to share. This is handheld I intentionally left my tri-pod at home cause I was traveling with 4 other people in one vehicle. They had built a tall fence around this steep outlook I suppose from either preventing people from accidentally falling or intentionally jumping. So I had to stick my camera lens in between two steel bars. So I thought it actually came out pretty good.

Treasure Falls is a waterfall in the San Juan Mountains, within Mineral County, Colorado. It is located in the San Juan National Forest, off U.S. Highway 160, about 15 miles northeast of Pagosa Springs. The falls are named after a local legend about "a treasure of gold" buried in the mountain that the falls plunge from. The falls are 105 feet high.

During a stay in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, this was the only time clouds were noticed. The tall Ponderosa Pines framed this beautiful fire sky.

About 15 minutes before moonrise (glow at bottom left) on 15 June, green airglow and the Milky Way dominated the skies over Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

This is an older image from last year but I thought today to run it through newer Photoshop HDR program just to see what will happen.

Treasure Falls, Pagosa Springs, CO

Spent the last few days down in Pagosa Springs, CO. My girlfriend's parents made a trip to Grand Canyon, and we met them in Pagosa Springs on their way back. I brought the camera with me but hadn't done any research on where to go shoot. I figured I would find something, and sure enough I did. As we made it over Wolf Creek Pass on our way into Pagosa, we passed by the parking lot for Treasure Falls. I saw it briefly from the road, so Friday morning I decided to check it out. I was hoping for some color in the sky to illuminate the falls a bit, but the overcast sky didn't give way to any color. It did give me some good exposure times, and the lush plants and trees had some great saturation to them. I haven't photographed many waterfalls, so this was a nice treat all to myself on this morning.

Summer hike near Pagosa Springs, Colorado

Minerals deposited at the inlet of the lake give it its milky color.

took a trip up to Pagosa Springs, Colorado yesterday to visit friends

Here's another Milky Way time lapse over a 4.5 hour period. The brightening at the end of this clip is caused by the moon rising to the left. Taken with a Fujifilm X-T5, 16-55 mm f/2.8 lens at iso 8000 and exposure of 13s.

Green airglow developed around midnight and some bands of red airglow were also captured near the end of this clip.

Picture of the day

Hi friends!! Here is the picture I referenced in my last waterfall shot. This was barely on arriving. I didn't get here nearly as early as planned lol! This was our last day and on our drive back home. We had planned to get up really early again and make it here by sunrise. But after we finally got everything re-packed to go, cleaned all the rooms and stripped the beds down in our Airbnb, it was much later than we anticipated. Still I was so very much appreciative of the sunrise pictures at the Dunes I'd gotten the few days before that I honestly was just glad to be on our way. I'd never been to Treasure Falls so I wasn't even sure how the lighting would fall. Turns out even though technically sunrise had happened about an hour or so before, the sun hadn't actually made it over the waterfall which worked out fantastically for me ;) We drove up with the sun starting to peak right over the waterfall top. I'm actually impressed with myself and how quickly I set up my tripod haha! In the end it all worked out, even with us leaving later than anticipated, I was still able to get the sun rays coming over the top. If you were to drive to Treasure Falls today this is exactly what you see when you pull into the lot. Enough to get you excited and up that trail. I told you the story of my mistake in heading up the Primitive trail ha! But the other way ended up being a beautiful hike through deep lush forest. The path winded through tall trees, wildflowers and I can't stress the green enough. I believe I will share a path picture I took there because it is so beautiful especially when you know where it is leading... Hope you're not tired of this series yet! :))

The Day Is Gone

Put all the hurts and worries away

The sun has set

The evening is nigh

The mountains are calling

Showing off a majestic glow

So take in the view

Savor a day lived

And look forward to tomorrow}

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one late afternoon in Colorado at bed and breakfast location stayed overnight in the Pagosa Springs. The view is looking to the northeast to ridges and peaks of the East-Central San Juan Mountains. This was at a bed-and-breakfast place I stayed overnight after exploring more of southeastern Colorado in Durango and Silverton. So after many hours of driving this day, it felt wonderful to take in a mountain view for the evening.

As for the skies above, it was as I began working on the image in post-production that I then decided to once again try out the sky replacement setting in Photoshop with this image. The sunset colors with the clouds definitely seemed appropriate for this Colorado mountain setting in what I had loved seeing. So the skies are part of the Adobe stock images in Photoshop but all else is captured with my Nikon D850 SLR camera. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 7 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

I wanted this photo to have a dark but hopeful mood. This is one of my favorite drives around Pagosa Springs and last May I moved away from the area.

Williams Creek Reservoir, Colorado, after a late afternoon thunderstorm.

Using a 8mm lens with a Fujifilm X-T3 under Bortle 3 skies while visiting Pagosa Springs, Colorado, I time lapsed the Milky Way as it rose before the last quarter moonrise. The field of view is 109 degrees extending roughly from east-southeast to south-southwest.

Note the first night (17 June), the sky contained patches of moving green airglow and lots of satellites. The second night (18 June) had better sky transparency and much less satellites.

The exposures ranged from 13 to 10 seconds, iso 6400 to 8000, at f/3.5.
