These two statues support one of the balconies of the gatehouse of the palace of Lorraine's Dukes in Nancy. The faces are marked by the effort. The man on the left wears sandals and a period costume, very well represented. The woman on the right is obviously a black women. She is barefoot and wears a loincloth. His head has a curious headdress that seems to be made of feathers.

Well, I was over in Independence, MO on an overcast Saturday afternoon, so I decided to head to somewhere where the sun didn't matter; a cave.
This is Space Center Distribution's SW9 taking a rest for the weekend, underground in Independence, MO. Space Center is an underground complex in a former limestone mine with a network of man-made caves for storage of products.
The locomotive the former Missouri Pacific 9178, which was built in 6-1951. Eventually, it became 1240, before being retired by the UP in 1983.

This impressive limestone colossus shows Pharaoh Ramesses II in all his splendor. This is one of the highlights of the Ramsesses II exhibition. The statue is more than 2 meters high (6.56 ft) and weighs 750 kg (1653 lbs). It is magnificent.and had never left Egypt before.
The pharaoh is represented standing and holds in each hand a mekes, a cylinder serving as a box for papyri. Wearing a nemes (a striped headdress only worn by the king), sporting a false beard, he also carries a dagger slipped into the belt of his pleated loincloth.

It even reached the Financial Times and the Guardian that the venerable purveyor of clothes for the masses Tati will close down per the end of the year. The original owners are no longer involved, new markets entrants are more popular, and COVID-19 did the rest. Meanwhile, Barbès–Rochechouart, the area around Tati shows limited signs of gentrification, remaining an area for new settlers in Paris. First from other areas of France, later from French North Africa, now often from further south in Africa. Although it has been a while since I saw African ladies dressed in pagnes selling bananas from embers, right in front of Tati.

After interchanging at UP Cham-Pagne Yard, Space Center Distribution's SW9 switch engine shoves one lone boxcar across Truman Road up the UP Pixley Industrial Lead, which was at one time the MP River Sub. Space Center is a subsurface complex in a reclaimed limestone mine with a network of man-made caves for storage and staging of products.
The locomotive is no stranger to former Missouri Pacific rail, as the unit was built in 6-1951, builder number 12559 as MP 9178. Under the 1960's system renumbering plan the unit became 1240. It was retired by the UP on 3-15-1983. The unit was sold to Commercial Distribution Center, which became Cham-Pagne Switching Corp. and now belongs to Space Center.
The Union Pacific's LMR40 brings cars for interchange up the Pixley from Lee's Summit on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and the switcher normally comes out that afternoon to grab them. This is one of the more rarely photographed operations in Kansas City, since the engine only comes out of the caves 3 times a week and only runs over about a mile and a half of track.

Burkina Faso is one of the largest cotton producers in West Africa. Cotton is particularly valued in the making of traditional "Faso dan Fani" loincloths, which are part of the national cultural heritage. Strongly promoted by the government and widely embraced by the public, the sale of loincloths and clothing made from traditional fabrics has grown significantly in recent years. The photograph, taken in a shop in Ouagadougou, illustrates the wide variety of loincloth designs produced across the country.

Burkina Faso is one of the world's largest cotton producers. In terms of textile crafts, it is known for its woven loincloths and traditional "Faso dan Fani" clothing. The Boucle du Mouhoun region, in particular, produces blankets in the form of hand-sewn strips of colourful fabric with numerous patterns. The photo shows an example of a blanket made by a women's association in the village of Wakuy, which has its craft centre.

The photo shows some of the equipment commonly found in rural areas. In the foreground, a borehole equipped with an India Mk II pump, the most widely used type for this type of project, due to its robustness and ease of maintenance. The building in the background on the left is a multifunctional platform that offers various milling and hulling services using a chain of equipment attached to a motor using transmission belts. Above the colourful barrels, the exhaust with its characteristic sound can be seen, creating a particular atmosphere in rural villages. Finally, the building in the background on the right is a craft centre for women, where they can carry out various activities, such as weaving traditional loincloths, producing local soap, or processing non-timber forest products.

After folding my previous version of Anubis, I noticed many details I wanted to improve such as the head, the headdress's proportions, the front of the loincloth and the armbands on the arms rather than the legs. I think I managed to get all the upgrades I wanted, but there are still some aspects to improve such as the thickness in the arms and shoulders preventing the necklace to fully circle the neck. While the color changes are the same than my previous version, they are not very visible due to the paper used.
Lomé Grand Market - Pagne (Tessuti stampati a cera).
The manufacturing technique is inspired by Javanese batiks, made with hydrophobic waxes.
The first fabrics of this style were imported by Ghanaian mercenaries who worked in Indonesia for the English and Dutch.
The creation and weaving of these "pagne" gave rise to a real industry.
The motifs, sometimes humorous or popular (images of TV series heroes, shock phrases, etc.), are mainly designed by Burkinabe, Malian and Ivorian artists, often making this garment a means of communication with strong socio-symbolic values.
The very profitable trade of these fabrics was initially in the hands of the famous "mama-benz".
The name "mama-benz" comes from the fact that these women were the only ones, in Togo, to own Mercedes Benz cars.

I doubt I'll get a more polished version than this one of my anubis model. I have, amongst others, solved a layer problem at the neck and shoulders, gave more paper for the collar and found a way to increase the possible movement at the legs and loincloth. As always, the pose is not ideal to photograph. Still, I have opted to show the back of this model. Like my previous versions, the back is not closed, but the loincloth and collar (a bit hard to see on the picture) are. I took the habit of refolding my more accomplished versions in metallic tissue paper, but I had to take sandwich paper for this model as the choice of colors adds a lot.

The photo shows modern looms for weaving the traditional "Faso dan Fani" loincloth at the workshop of a prominent local fashion designer. The advantage of these looms is their ability to weave wide loincloths, thus reducing the number of seams required in the finished garments. Both women and men carry out the weaving of the loincloths.

The men, for the Gerewol dance, are bare-chested and form a line. They wear a female loin-cloth and hold a ceremonial hatchet. The make-up is made of red earth pigment. To look brighter, they dance facing the sun. The stand on tiptoe to look taller (most of them are already more than 6 feet tall !). The whiteness of eyes and teeth is a sign of beauty for this society.
The Wodaabe belong to the family of Peul people. In the XIXth century they separated from the Fulbe Peul, and far from islam and urban life, they kept the traditional nomadic life. They are probably around 100 000.
Once a year, at the end of rainy season, when the cows are fat and water is in abundance, they gather for a very special type of competition : the Gerewol. They choose a place in the bush, near a pond. During one week, a group, the "guests", will face another one, the "hosts" (The following year, they will intervert their parts). It's a festival, but also a kind of war. The male "guests" come to take the female of the other group : bachelor girls or married women who want to leave their husband. The only weapon for men : charm and seduction. They will dance days and nights, with only short breaks. The climax is the Gerewol dance, the quintessential expression of Wodaabe male beauty.
