I have not been able to hike for a few weeks due to a foot injury, so I am catching up on posting some images from earlier in the summer. In mid-July I spent another four days out on the Washington coast, and was lucky to experience three beautiful sunsets while I was there. Each one was different, and captivating in its own way.
This one was taken on the final night. It was the cloudiest of the three evenings, and there was a thick layer of clouds and fog along the horizon. But as the sun sank into them, the interplay of light and clouds and the way they swirled and danced together was absolutely mesmerizing, and I watched from the water's edge until the light faded and dissolved into dusk.

This photo was taken the second day of my Washington coast trip, on an evening which featured a beautiful sunset and an even more striking afterglow that went on and on and on as the sky seemed loathe to surrender its ever-changing colors to the darkness of night.
I stayed down on the beach for awhile after sunset, but it was very windy and after the sun went down, that wind had a chilling bite to it. And since I had not brought gloves to the beach in July (silly me! 😄) my hands were getting numb, so when the colors started to fade I headed back up to the house where I was staying. As I climbed the stairs and trail up the steep hillside however, the sky lit up in shades of purple and orange that had me stopping every minute or two to take 'just a few more' shots.
The one here is from partway up the hill, where the conveniently spaced branches of this tree provided a viewpoint back down to the beach. Most of the sunset watchers had left the shore by then, but one solitary figure lingered down by the water, immersed in the post-sunset glow.
A quiet time at an ocean beach provides solitude and a sense of infinite space while listening to the hypnotic roar of the waves.

Here in Washington we are having an historic heat wave with three straight days of triple digit (Fahrenheit) temperatures, topping out at 115 degrees on Monday. Our normal temperatures for June are in the mid 70s, and since they started tracking temperature recordings in the 1800s there have only ever been 3 days TOTAL that were over 100 degrees so this is completely unprecedented.
Changing tides caused by the the Moon's gravitational forces; earthquakes; tsunamis; storm waves and surges; oil spills, drunken ship captains and more create danger for piers - that's PIER PRESSURE.
Crystal Pier, Pacific Beach, San Diego, California is the only pier where you can make overnight accommodations. The Hotel & Cottages opened in 1927.

Kristen ( a law student trying to make ends meet ) was getting a little chilly...It was towards sunset and the temperature was in the mid 50's ~She had just played that song and I had missed to record it~ I asked her to play a few bars from it again and she did ;-)) She soon packed her sax and was on her way after that~Thanks Kristen !!!
