Not knowing what lies ahead is the worst part of this confinement; all I can do is trust in Providence and hope for the best. This photo is from my archive of travel photos, this time of Pacific Beach in Washington state.

"For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream." Vincent Van Gogh

"The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty; not knowing what comes next."

In the quiet moment of twilight when the day fades into nightfall, Mother Nature seems to hold her breath.

"For age is opportunity no less than youth itself, though in another dress, and as the evening twilight fades away, the sky is filled with stars, invisible by day."

~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Sunset at Pacific Beach, Washington

"Our revels now are ended. These our actors,

As I foretold you, were all spirits and

Are melted into air, into thin air:

And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,

The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,

The solemn temples, the great globe itself,

Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve

And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,

Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff

As dreams are made on, and our little life

Is rounded with a sleep."

-William Shakespeare , The Tempest

I have not been able to hike for a few weeks due to a foot injury, so I am catching up on posting some images from earlier in the summer. In mid-July I spent another four days out on the Washington coast, and was lucky to experience three beautiful sunsets while I was there. Each one was different, and captivating in its own way.

This one was taken on the final night. It was the cloudiest of the three evenings, and there was a thick layer of clouds and fog along the horizon. But as the sun sank into them, the interplay of light and clouds and the way they swirled and danced together was absolutely mesmerizing, and I watched from the water's edge until the light faded and dissolved into dusk.

"The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction." ~ Rachel Carson

"Look at everything always as if you were seeing it either for the first or last time: Thus is your time on earth filled with glory."

~ Betty Smith

A quiet time at an ocean beach provides solitude and a sense of infinite space while listening to the hypnotic roar of the waves.

"In solitude the mind gains strength and learns to lean upon itself." ~~ Laurence Sterne

There is nothing like a windswept beach to provide a reminder that adversity comes to us all.

Changing tides caused by the the Moon's gravitational forces; earthquakes; tsunamis; storm waves and surges; oil spills, drunken ship captains and more create danger for piers - that's PIER PRESSURE.

That quiet time just after sunset when night falls at Pacific Beach, Washington state leads to meditative thoughts.

And to close, we are back for a variation on the opening photograph with just a slight change of the perspective and time passing. How much time? It's about 50 minutes after the sunrise photograph ... #etbtsy
