The Long Goodbye

Sunset Afterglow, Pacific Beach, Washington

 

 

This photo was taken the second day of my Washington coast trip, on an evening which featured a beautiful sunset and an even more striking afterglow that went on and on and on as the sky seemed loathe to surrender its ever-changing colors to the darkness of night.

 

I stayed down on the beach for awhile after sunset, but it was very windy and after the sun went down, that wind had a chilling bite to it. And since I had not brought gloves to the beach in July (silly me! 😄) my hands were getting numb, so when the colors started to fade I headed back up to the house where I was staying. As I climbed the stairs and trail up the steep hillside however, the sky lit up in shades of purple and orange that had me stopping every minute or two to take 'just a few more' shots.

 

The one here is from partway up the hill, where the conveniently spaced branches of this tree provided a viewpoint back down to the beach. Most of the sunset watchers had left the shore by then, but one solitary figure lingered down by the water, immersed in the post-sunset glow.
