Quite a messy day of heavy rain, strong winds & ice, all day long! This is a tree in my back garden. This is what Spring looks like today!
An end of March ice storm, the biggest winter precipitation event this season in my part of New York. Very strange to have such a snow/ice free winter. The ice was sufficient, however, to cause a large number of power outages -- usually many little ones in an area instead of fewer large ones. The tree branches are covered with little icicles, the product of a sequence of snow, ice, rain and freezing rain.
captured at the entrance of estación atocha during the spanish blackout, where the silence of halted trains echoed through the light. she walks — unaware, or perhaps unfazed — as if people still arrive even when nothing departs. the symmetry becomes a quiet metaphor: the coming and going, the presence and absence, mirrored in shadow and shape.
on the day of a nationwide power blackout in spain, nothing moved. trains halted. metros silenced. public transport vanished into stillness. this was captured in estación de príncipe pío, madrid — just west of plaza de españa. people descended into the station, hoping for a way forward, but came back up again, directionless. i wanted to hold onto that moment — a visual metaphor for motion interrupted, for looking down the line and seeing only your own shadow walking out.
Who would ever have thought that inspiration would come during a power outage?
This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a weekly challenge called “Snap Happy”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each week, and the image is to be posted on the Monday of the week.
This week the theme, “yellow” was chosen by Andrew,
On Tuesday night, we had a power outage when a white, lowered utility drove into the power pole across the street from me. Who would have imagined that something yellow would come out of the pitch black? It did: the gleaming yellow light of a candle as we waited for the power to be restored.
20 hours of freezing rain. Over 1 million households without power in Quebec. Flashbacks to the 1989 Ice Storm.
This was shot through our patio door during our last storm. Was really windy, so not the best subject for an HDR.
Electrical fire on pole. Village centre, Cloyne, caused power outage for several hours. The energy of the fire caused fireworks for about an hour. Flickr Friday #energy
well, last week we joined the other 800,000 California residents in a utility company initiated power outage.
on Tuesday we prepared.
leon got gas for the generator, filled buckets of water, and we checked all the lanterns and flashlights for working batteries.
the power went off a couple of hours later.
we are all-electric, therefore we have no way to use the stove, oven, or microwave. we have no water because the pump to the well runs on electricity. we can't take a bath or shower or flush the toilets.
leon runs a cable to the refrigerators and the freezer. he ran the coffee pot off the kitchen cord. [we always have bottled water on hand so we can have coffee and the dogs can have water.]
and even tho' it was chilly at night, we had a fire in the woodstove. [we have no central heating] and I discovered that my clock in my bedroom has a battery backup. I'd forgotten.
I always have books to read next to the battery-operated camp lantern.
leon has a radio that runs on batteries and he could listen to outage reports and music.
our entire town and surrounding areas were shut down.
we were lucky.
our power came back on Thursday.
three hours later I got intestinal flu'. it's a good thing the power was back on.
I finally got up this morning [Sunday] and did some laundry and folded it.
I emptied the dishwasher. I checked the greenhouse and watered.
I ate some cold cereal.
I went back to bed.
I had some noodles for dinner and a bit of salad.
I am back in bed.
tomorrow will be better.
I've actually been feeling as old as I look. blech...
I have been without power since yesterday morning (the California storms.....) - I will try to catch up with commenting once my fingers warm up again!!

….. I should wish things more often- it came back on moments after I posted this!! Now to charge up my phone and turn off the lantern!!
Have a good night, y’all
Have you ever hit that point where you just feel like you can't take it anymore... that was today. I hit a wall and the tears wouldn't stop. Yesterday I checked out of a hotel in Hawaii and into a hotel in San Francisco. This morning I checked out of the hotel in San Francisco and into a hotel in San Jose. I feel so alone and so out of touch.
To top it off there was a power outage in the part of town that I am staying in so no internet, no tv, no light to read by... so thus no distractions for me. The light you see just behind me is the only light in my room from the outside window until the sun goes down.
Breathe in, Breathe out... tomorrow is another day and another day closer to being home... Breathe in, Breathe out! That is my mantra!
A transformer fire downtown caused a power outage in and around the Eaton Centre. All the stores were closed but nobody seemed to be leaving.
Our living room at night during a power outage. O! the beauty and peace of candlelight! processed on my ipad using icolorama.
One of the poles hit the side and top of a car...there was someone in the car but they got out ok and apparently weren't injured

To all the volunteers and workers that came to help with this devastation.
Sandy sure made everyone think differently,
it was really tough and for many still without power and others without homes to go to,
Please continue to pray for them,
Many thanks to all my flicker friends that wrote to me several times,
For 11 Days we did not have any power or heat, glad we were able to light up the fireplace
sor some warmth, our water heater is natural gas so we had hot water,
As I said before we were very lucky thank God!
Sandy sure made many of us little wiser caring and Humble,
Thanks again,
I will try to catch up with all of my contacts...
Have a lovely week ahead!
Being in the middle of a move was actually a good thing. When the power was out at my old place, I could camp out in my new apartment. There was no furniture, but facetiming with friends helped pass the time.

Another power outage. Candles and an oil lamp helped to light the darkness.

on this day of april 28 spain and portugal went to the dark and off network for almost 24 hours, people went out listening old radio and thinking. network was out of service so I don't know what this guy was looking at !!!
These guys are heros when you loose power in 90+ temps and want to be able to sleep. The storm came through fast but mighty. Winds brought down a large tree, that took down a power line, and snapped the pole in half. It was repaired faster than anticipated....about 5 hours after it went down.

Our power went out for about 15 minutes in the early afternoon, but came back on, only to go out again at around 6:00 for the next 24 hours or so. We made the best of it, and enjoyed the "unplugged" time all day Saturday. Even with no power for a little over 24 hours, we were one of the lucky families. Some people STILL don't have power 4 1/2 days later.

Whoever would have imagined being without power for 26 hours before, during and after Thanksgiving? We thought this only happened in Connecticut, not NH where snowstorms are so common!

The aftermath of a serious freezing rain storm that started on Wednesday, which calmly let itself out early Thursday morning. Power outages across the region, affecting some 200,000 homes and businesses. Thankfully we have a 10 kW permanent standby generator to take the edge off... We were able to keep our food fresh, our furnace on and even watched some of our favourite downloaded shows (even though there was no internet).
The Fairview Fire has burned over 7,000 acres in Hemet, CA and claimed two lives and destroyed seven structures. Extreme fire behavior is spotted with multiple fire whirls.
that was nothing compared to the eastern US on monday aug 6...
Hundreds of thousands of people in seven eastern US states are still without power following deadly thunderstorms and heavy rain on Monday.
High winds that toppled trees, downed powerlines and damaged buildings were reported in at least 904 locations in the US, with most of the damage occurring mainly in the South and Mid-Atlantic regions Monday, the US Storm Prediction Center said. In addition, the agency received 151 reports of hail across the Great Plains and Appalachian Mountains that broke numerous car windows.
At least two people died, according to the Associated Press.
Across the US, 1,766 flights were scrubbed, according to FlightAware, an airline tracking service. In addition, hundreds of thousands of customers are still without electricity, according to PowerOutage.us as of 6:31 a.m. New York time. The seven eastern states impacted are Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
While the weather has cleared across the Mid-Atlantic, flood watches and warnings are out across New England Tuesday with a threat of additional heavy rain.
In other weather news:
Portugal: More than 1,000 people fled a wildfire in southern Portugal, as Europe’s latest blast of heat intensified over the Iberian peninsula.
Over 800 firefighters were battling to contain a blaze near the town Odemira, as strong winds drove a blaze in the wooded hills where the Portuguese regions of Alentejo and the Algarve meet.
Central Europe: Slovenia is beginning to assess the human and economic toll from flooding that’s inundated parts of the country as the Alpine nation of 2.1 million took the brunt of record rainfall in central Europe.
Tropics: South Korea’s government urged its industrial sector to be prepared for damages from Typhoon Khanun as the storm approaches the nation’s shores this week. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Lan has formed in the Pacific southeast of Japan. It is tracking more or less in the direction of Tokyo, but its five days out and there could be a deviation in the track.
