Project 71 Oxygen

IC410 in the constellation of Auriga is an emission nebula of gas and dust surrounding the young star cluster NGC 1893 and famous for the two "tadpoles", regions of denser gas and dust being sculpted by the radiation and solar winds from the cluster's stars.

This image is an integration of over 26 hours of data captured as 314 x 300 second exposures on a QHY183C cooled CMOS OSC camera. The scope was a William Optics FLT110 with Flat4 and an STC duo narrowband filter was used to allow through only the light from ionized hydrogen and oxygen.

Image sequencing was managed via SGP with PHD2 for guiding and all post-processing was carried out in PixInsight.

Winterkill, a term for fish dying under the ice due to a lack of oxygen, is a well-known phenomenon which happens when plants and algae in the water stop producing oxygen due to the lack of sunlight.

IC 1871

A smallish but stunning emission nebula, IC1871, is located within the more well-known Soul Nebula. Rolling clouds of ionized hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur and dust have created the spectacular features that define this nebula. The small very dark feature near the top of this image is a Bok Globule.

I imaged this nebula a few years ago but decided to try it again with a different telescope. I also used different techniques during post processing which, I think, resulted in a better image.

This version was done using a palette first suggested by Richard Crisp. The red channel is a combination of hydrogen and sulfur, the green channel is oxygen while the blue channel is comprised of oxygen and hydrogen.

It's the low temperature of mountain torrential waters that allows them to become saturated with oxygen as they flow over the falls.

They are then home to animals that are major consumers of dissolved oxygen, such as the larvae of a host of insects.

During floods, the torrent abandons the materials it transports. These form banks of gravel, sand and silt, which are then colonized by plants. The vegetation on these banks consumes some of the organic pollution in the water and protects the banks.

Yess!! Loove!! And where??? Up-up and away, onto the Swiss Alps!! Full of oxygen, and surrounded by pure, Natural Beauty!

Tiny bubbles on the pond’s surface may indicate excess DO levels. (DO = Dissolved Oxygen)

Just as we need oxygen to live, fish and other pond inhabitants require adequate oxygen levels to respire.

In ponds, oxygen is present in its dissolved form. It enters the pond system in many ways – by diffusing through the water’s surface, via wave and wind action, and through photosynthesis. Productive ponds, with high biomass, can quickly deplete dissolved oxygen levels in the absence of a mechanized pump or aerator.
