Thanks to Ken Barker for pointing out the correct description of this phenomenon!
This is a macro shot of one particular spot on an arching steel construction (one of many) erected along the main Erba Park pathway for the 2012 Bavarian state horticultural exhibition. Modern art archways along the canal, metal that was supposed to corode. When I shot the photo, it seemed to be a dull corroded brown. But then I took a closer look in Lightroom and saw the rest. Sunshine had brought out its texture and varied color. I had a 16mm AF extension tube mounted between lens and camera. A re-edited archives shot. [FUJI5168_lr_2000]

In a hidden corner of Target Park at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts stands a sculpture simply titled “Fountain Sculpture.” It has a modern form of vertical sweeping shapes. It no longer stands in a fountain, but it has an amazing patina that speaks of long contact with water. I am fascinated by the textures and colors of that patina.

All bricks at this time (1837) were fired in a kiln, and frequently the clay had mineral deposits in it. Iron was very commonly found in the clay dug around the NYC area, which at the time came from the NY/NJ corridor around Staten Island, near Woodbridge, NJ. Brick was not yet commonly used in building construction, as most buildings were still wooden. It was not until the great Manhattan fire of 1848 that fire codes were adapted and brick became the standard in fireproof construction.
