Spotted Owlet

Thailand

This freshly fledged barred owlet got distracted from preening its foot! Too cute!

A quick pass thorugh my moth guide didn't bring me an ID, but I think it's in one of those classes.

I suspect this Australian Owlet-nightjar is the same bird I photographed in 2019 in the same location, but in a new hollow about 10m from the previous. Always a thrill to find these nocturnal birds sunning themselves in the afternoon sun.

Thanks for viewing! 😃

I was totally surprised to find this sweet face looking at me today from a knothole in a tree I have been going to for over 12 months. It was such a thrill to see this sweet little creature.

Staying with the owlet theme, another one from a Long-eared owl nest site taken a couple of months ago.

Our local LEOs have had a great breeding season with at least 14 successful nest sites for a total of around 36 young, give or take, which is excellent news.

This one was perched right next to a public footpath, completely un-fazed by passing walkers and enjoying some lovely low setting sunlight.

Two of Three Owlets in Fish Creek Park

One of at least two western screech owlets getting one of its first glimpses at the world beyond the nest cavity in the mimosa tree in our backyard in Portland Oregon.

This is the wide eyed look of a Great Horned Owlet on his first day of flying lessons away from the branches near the nest.

He was making lots of noise to be sure that mom and dad knew where he was!

The Australian Owlet-nightjar is one of Australia’s most widespread nocturnal birds, yet it is seldom seen at night, though its grating or purring calls are a characteristic sound of the night in the Australian bush. Owlet-nightjars are seen surprisingly often during daylight hours, when they are easily disturbed at their roosts in hollow branches or spouts. They usually peek out of the hollow entrance, peering at the source of disturbance, and are readily flushed from their hollows, flying directly to another hollow and diving head-first inside.
