Young great horned owlet peeking out from a manufactured nest. We had heard there were two owlets but only one was partially visible. Even such a big baby is dwarfed by the enormous home oak tree!

Curious Burrowing Owlet in Florida.

I've been trying to clean up my desk and take care of the tablescraps that I have hanging around. I built this owl's head about two months ago and he's just been staring at me, pleading not to be scrapped. I actually really like the head because I think the different textures flow well. And with the release Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole today, I thought I might as well whip up a little something just to call it finished. The body took me a few hours at most - in fact, I've already broken it up, though I have saved the head. (By the way, I'm not usually one to go to non-Disney/Pixar animated films, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a textbook epic, but hey, owls are still awesome.)

Great Horned Owlets @ Ada County, Idaho. Heavily overcast day under a dark tree canopy, it took awhile to get a shot with all four faces at once. Taken from a safe and respectful distance so as not to stress chicks or parent.

Had an opportunity to spend some time with this juvenile great horned owlet a couple days prior to my injury and finally getting to see what I saw. This was a single owlet for this nesting pair speculation had many theories but I'm sticking with the facts. It was the only owlet when I was there. Estimating the age at 6 weeks since it's branching and had not fledged the ear tufts are beginning to show and not much down feathers are left.

I have gotten to watch several baby Great Horned Owls start their new life at Brazos Bend State Park over the last couple of years.
