A Great Horned Owl and Owlet

Campbell Park ACT

She came out for a bit of morning sun at 0820 today, and stayed out for an hour. Have been trying for a week to get the time, wind and sun 'just right'.

This is an updated photo, taken today, of one of the owlets that I posted 5 days ago. Bubo virginianus

Great Gray owlet lets me know I am close enough!

Barred owlet - one of a set of three. This was the last time I saw them; the next day the body of the mama owl was found. Since this is a densely residential area she could have ingested a poisoned mouse. I did not go back to check on them, not wanting to add any stress. But I wonder how they fared with one parent.

Continuation of this albino Barred owlet series.

This one was taken under extreme low light after 9pm beside a forested trail. The camera's autofocus was struggling...luckily it did nail the white colour at the end.

Cute Burrowing Owlet perched on a stick in Florida

Heard from several people that the Great Horned owl was nesting in its usual spot in Mammoth Hot Springs so we made it a point to stop and check it out one day. In years past, we were able to see the mother and nest but never the owlets, so we were very excited to see that both the owlets had ventured out of the nest and occasionally would open their eyes long enough for us to get a good look through all those branches.

Fun fact (from ncwildlife.org): These owls have large glaring eyes that are brilliant yellow, giving the animal a cat-like appearance. Like other members of this family, the horned owl’s vision(particularly at night), is exceptional. The huge eyes face forward, giving the animal binocular vision and enabling it to pinpoint prey with deadly accuracy.

Have a great Sunday.....thanks for all your visits and comments!!!!

Northern Pygmy Owlets, small and nocturnal birds in the Bay Area, nest in old woodpecker holes, laying three to five eggs incubated for about 25 days. Initially, the male provides food, but as the chicks grow, both parents join in the foraging to meet their increasing appetite. Found some more baby owls today on my walk :)

I'm most likely the very first human that this baby owlet has ever seen eye to eye. Feeling blessed.

The spotted owlet (Athene brama) is a small owl which breeds in tropical Asia from mainland India to Southeast Asia. A common resident of open habitats including farmland and human habitation, it has adapted to living in cities. They roost in small groups in the hollows of trees or in cavities in rocks or buildings. It nests in a hole in a tree or building, laying 3–5 eggs. They are often found near human habitation. The species shows great variation including clinal variation in size and forms a superspecies with the very similar little owl.

While the other owlet was busy exploring the branches this little one has all it can do to stay upright. Fortunately he/she has a soft mattress of moss to lean against.

A great horned owl family has a nest on top of a stack of bags in a local Lowe's garden center! This morning the two owlets were in different parts of the store.

Not their best look in the rain.

Barred Owl mom has left three owlets to bask in the sun. This one was the easiest to photograph. Please note that picture was taken from quite a distance, and no owlet was disturbed during this photo-shoot.
