Its that time of the year again. The squid are now about 6 months old and they begin to gather near the reef during the daylight hours. Over the next few days more and more squid join the group and male and female pairs begin to form.

( to be continued)

Here the two brown squid could be two male squid fighting over the female on the right or a female repelling a male. (And if I have understood things correctly the female on the right could be a male pretending to be a female so that a male squid wastes his spermatophores. )

When the squid are in this brown state they do not seem very aware of their surroundings - they may be easily spotted by predators and are easier to photograph as well.

Note: this is the second photo in the series

( to be continued. )

13 years diving in Hawaii and I've never seen one of these, much less thought about getting a picture. Deepwater, nocturnal schooling predator, and all of a sudden there are dozens of them near shore in ten feet of water. Go figure.

Good eatin' (in Japan) I've heard. More underwater stuff at: www.stevedunleavy.com

Cheers, Steve

Came across about 12 squid (Hawaiian name; "Muhe'e" at the steps as I was getting out at Kaka'ako. They were cool and were in a rough formation but I was working with a 105mm lens so I could only get a couple in one shot. Local Hawaii people use the colloquialism "squid" for both octopus and squid, but there are two distinct Hawaiian language names; "He'e" is the word for octopus. Nikkor 105mm lens.

press - L - to see it large and on black.

press - F - if you like it :)
