Inside the maintenance bays of the Promservice - Otan depot in Ekibastuz. This depot provides the locomotives for the yard shunting and transfers to the main line exchange yards of the Bogatyr' Komir, the open cast coal mining combine in Ekibastuz, Kazakhstan. 2TE10M-2522 on the near line with a TEM2 behind, another 2TE10M sits beside this and TEM2-7777 near. The swarf is from the turning of the locomotives tyres.

Before the start of the morning shift, Sunday 12th of May 2024.

We were invited in though our visit was short. The lighting was poor, bright in through the windows but dark inside, 1 second at 100 ISO for a reasonable aperture. No tripod, it was in the car further down the road. But the high ISO is not for me unless there really is no choice. So just the one picture, here it is. It may be the only picture I ever take of a TE10 inside a depot.

The RAF recently retired theirs though one remains active - presumably keeping crew currency alive until the advent of the incoming Boeing E-7 AEW.1 'Wedgetails' , the latter being based on the Boeing 737NG

The current NATO fleet of 14 is mooted to be replaced by 6 Boeing E-7A Wedgetails - a highly modified B737 airframe

The latter type being used by Australia, Turkey, South Korea and our own Royal Air Force where it's first example has recently made it's maiden flight

The Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System or MILES, a part of which can be seen here attached to the Gurkhas rifle, is used by armies around the world to simulate live combat.

A 2TE10M of the Promservice Otan crosses over the settlement lagoons of the Ekibastuz TETS transferring 65 wagons of coal from the Bogatyr' mine to the main line exchange at Ekibastuz 2 station, Monday morning May the 13th 2024.

Still early, this was the last train we saw here before driving over to a Kafeci on the north eastern edge of town before breakfast. We then left, for Karaganda by way of Molodezhnyy and Kushoky.

This is the last but one upload I shall place here from Kazakhstan for a month or so. There are many more pictures to sort through beyond this town, and also pictures taken since we returned here, back to the UK.

Ekibastuz is a unique place, environmental hell, railway and Industrial heaven. Forged this way by the labour of Stalins Gulag prisoners, the mines were developed in 1953, helped massively by the arrival of the railway. Luckily for the prisoners out here in the harsh climate. this was the year of Stalins death, and the gulags then shrank until dissolved by Khrushchev in 1960. This is one of the world largest open cast coal deposits, 13 billion tonnes. We had no real idea of what to expect here, just big open mines with associated electric locomotives hauling the coal and spoil out from the pits. And how would we be received here? You can only find out by dipping your foot in the water as there is nowhere to hide as an industrial railway photographer. But we were received reasonably well as it turns out, with some invites into places we would not see otherwise and no incidents to put us off our quarry. The same cannot be said for every place we visited in this country. But those tales and their associated photographs will have to wait a few weeks, as unfortunately we are not full time on this!

TEM2U-8896, owned by the Promservice- Otan of Ekibastuzugol waits its next turn of duty outside of the Gorodskaya Park A station, Ekibastuz. This freshly painted locomotive was built at the Bryansk machinery plant back in 1987. The station, on industrial lines and not with passenger trains anymore, is just before the depot of the Promservice - Otan and looks after the fleet of TEM2 and 2TE10M used in the transfer of coal from the Bogatyr' Komir to the main line transfer station. The driver, enquiring of our interest in his machine, suggested we should go to the depot and look in there.

The collection of art here really effected me, I keep coming back to it, like this piece, I have three photos of it here, I could not keep from adding this one.. I find it compelling...

the fact that they are made of stones, so heavy, so present, so a part of everything there, blanding into nature... it is historic, a representation of the remnants of ions of time from that area, kind of like looking into the past of the place, seeing the passage of time... stones stay, I have been to many archeological places, where sones stayed, like notes left from the ones once existed there... here these two were uprising to find in the bushes on a path, suddenly like ghosts, like the people who rode in canoes exploring there, had passed and these left as memorials to exploration, and they also look like caskets, as well as the smooth surfaces look like water, like looking into water, into depths...

poetry and art, connecting thoughts, feelings emotions, enriching our experience of life, making neurons jump from one point to another, creating networks of perception... we see further and wider and deeper...

I need to get back there in different times of the year, and see this art in different states of nature... for me it transformed that part of Portland which is mostly industrial and flat extending into the flowing waters of the two rivers that meet there...

Allied aircraft from 25 nations took to the skies as part of exercise Air Defender 23, the largest deployment exercise of air forces in NATO’s history. Up to 10,000 participants from 25 NATO Allies and partners with 250 aircraft have convened in Germany to practise integrating air operations. Exercise Air Defender 23 enables Allied air forces to deliver coordinated air power in the event of a crisis. The drills are aimed at boosting interoperability and preparedness to protect against aircraft, drones and missiles attacks on cities and critical infrastructure. The exercise ran from 12 to 23 June.
