Rom, Konstantinsbogen - Rome, Arch of Constantine (1886)

Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin

The Texas Theater in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas is well known as the place where the police captured Lee Harvey Oswald.

In my personal family history, the Texas Theater is where my parents as Oak Cliff residents went on their first date in the mid 1950s. in 1998, my parents gave me a tour from where they grew up; at the time, the theater looked abandoned. Perhaps it would have been demolished if not for its place in history. It took me 20 years to get to come back, not sure how I would find it. Thankfully, it has new owners with a vision and today it thrives. Plus, it has a fantastic neon sign.

Text of the historic marker:

Constructed in 1931, the Texas Theatre was designed by architect W. Scott Dunne. The "Texas," the largest suburban theater in Texas when it was built, is an "atmospheric" theater, a genre designed to enhance the fantasy and exoticism of the movies. The two-story building, originally owned by C. R. McHenry, is located at the commercial heart of the community of Oak Cliff. The original appearance of the theater evoked an Italian medieval structure with Venetian influences expressed in the decorative brickwork and stone.

The interior of the theater was designed with a Venetian court theme, complete with sound effects, clouds and a night sky of 118 twinkling stars in the auditorium. The original movie equipment was Motiograph Deluxe sound equipment, an extreme rarity at the time. The cooling and ventilating system was almost entirely invisible to the audience and consisted of two blowers powered by ten horsepower motors. In warm weather, the air was cooled through water. A renovation prior to 1956 resulted in the addition of stucco over the brick and stone façade.

On November 22, 1963, following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald was apprehended in the auditorium, propelling the Texas Theatre into the international spotlight. In April 1965, the theater was remodeled extensively on the exterior and interior. The uppermost section of the façade was removed and the theater's vibrant designs were sealed under stucco. United Artists closed the theater in 1989. In 1991 it was used in the filming of the movie, "JFK." In 2001, the Oak Cliff Foundation bought the theater. This Dallas landmark was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Aviation Cinemas reopened the theater in 2010.

Another footnote: WFAA (Channel 8) in Dallas, TX reported that the marker here needs a clarification and will be replaced. Oswald was arrested here technically for shooting Officer J.D. Tippit a few blocks away. The marker says that Oswald was apprehended here for President Kennedy’s assassination. In reality, police didn’t file that charge against Oswald until nearly midnight on November 22.

Tom Oswald termed this his “Backroads Bomber”.

German WWI flying ace Oswald Boelcke is to be credited for MAKING Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron. Richthofen himself would tell you that.

Boelcke (pronounced "Bulka" or "Bolka") had "movie star" good looks, intelligence, balls and charisma. After being awarded the 'Blue Max' and scoring 40 victories, Oswald Boelcke was killed in an aerial accident — He was NOT shot down.

When Boelcke died, every German fighter pilot took it personally... and if they didn't, they had a right to take it personally. He would continue to haunt the allies long after his death, as many of his cubs would become battle-hardened veterans with the ability to cut down the enemy, duly armed with the highest levels of skill and precision... not to mention newly found determination.

No one besides Anthony Fokker would prove to be more important in the arena of aerial combat.

"Hats off" forever.

“Peover is a monument to the oakwood that long contributed so much to architecture in these parts. A poem on the west wall celebrates its virtues”:

Talk not of Syrian cedar,

Nor yet of foreign pine,

And mention not the timber

Of any other clime.

But see our native oak

In noble grandeur stand,

The dread of every sea,

The glory of our land.

The first time I met him, I asked "Do you enjoy the park? Disney Park is so fun as well as the world of cartoons, isn't it?"

His answer is hopping again & again and it made me really…really happy.

His appearance at TOKYO DisneySEA is soooo "Lucky" for me & all Japanese fans !

I strongly hope that he will join parades & shows with Mickey & Friends in the near future.(Of course, I hope his appearance at other disney parks too.)

One of the two 'main' churches in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. St Oswald's can be seen from far away thanks to its tall spire.

St Oswald’s, Little Horton, was completed in 1902. The site for the church was given by Sir Francis Sharpe Powell of Horton Hall, and the costs of building were met by Mrs F. M. Jones-Balme and his wife in memory of her husband Mr Edward Balme Wheatley-Balme.

It is a grade 2 listed building. The listing reads: –

“1890-1902 architects F. H. and F. Healy. Sandstone ‘brick’ church with ashlar dressings, C14 details. Tall nave, aisles, transepts, shallow chancel. Triple gabled east and west ends. North-east tower adjoining transept. Aisle windows of 3 mullioned flat arched lights have rather a domestic character. Main east and west windows have good curvilinear tracery. Gabled north-east porch. Lofty tower with shallow buttresses to bell stage and octagonal turret. Broached spire with lucarnes. The spire makes an important contribution to the townscape.”

In the 1970s the congregation numbered up to 60 communicants on Sundays, but with the smaller congregations of the new millennium, not all the nave and aisles were needed for worship, even for the largest weddings. The long-held vision for a new centre within the church building became a reality under architect Ronald Sims RIBA, and following completion in April it was opened by the Bishop of Bradford, Rt. Rev. David James on 4th August 2005.

St Oswald’s (former) church, Fulford, York

St Oswald's Church is a Church of England parish church located in Ashbourne, in the county of Derbyshire, England.

The church is named after Oswald of Northumbria. A brass plaque in the chapel on the south side of the church commemorates its dedication on 24 April 1241 by Hugh de Pateshull, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield.

Architecturally, it dominates the small town with its 212-foot spire which was referred to by George Eliot as the "finest single spire in England". It is said to have been started in 1240 by Bishop Hugh de Pateshull. Construction probably lasted until the early 14th century. It replaced an earlier Saxon church, and possibly a second Norman one. (A Norman crypt was discovered during excavations in 1913.)

From 1837 to 1840, it was restored by Lewis Nockalls Cottingham, and then in the 1870s by George Gilbert Scott, who added the battlements to the chancel.

Until Ashbourne Hall was partially demolished, it and St Oswald's were the town's major monuments, standing at either end of the main street. The entrance to the hall's grounds continued the main street through high gates. What remains of the hall houses the local lending library and some unrelated offices. As they were before the 18th century when the Boothby's rebuilt and refurbished their home, St Oswald's and its tower are once again the major landmark, and the church is the town's main attraction. The church is a Grade I listed building.

I met Oswald when in the UK recently. He saw me taking shots on the market and came over to chat. His wonderful Caribbean accent fascinated me. He, like myself had also lived in Southampton in the 70's and 80's so we had a great chat about what it was like then. At the end he graciously allowed me to take a couple of pictures of him. A wonderful meeting.
