In the United States I’m a vegetarian but here in Ecuador I have had to manage an extreme influx of meat in my diet. Ecuador does not have a large industrial meat system like the United States and most of the meat in the markets here is sold by the individuals who raised the animal. At first seeing the meat so closely resemble the animal, such as these cuy (guinea pigs) on sale at the market in Gualaceo, was jarring because it wasn’t the unattached slab wrapped in plastic that is often presented in American supermarkets. However, here in Ecuador I have built a stronger connection to my food simply because I can go to the market, talk to the woman who raised and killed the cuy herself, and know the true origins of my meat.

One of the horses in this group was taking it easy, enjoying a morning nap. These horses were part of a group of 5 or 6 who stayed near the bridge onto the island the entire time we were there. It turned windy in the afternoon, and the horses kept to the island's leeward side.
There's some dispute of the origin of the Assateague horses. There is documented evidence that horses were roaming the island as early as the year 1600. Local legend says the horses made their way onto the island after a Spanish galleon shipwrecked just offshore, but there's no evidence that any such shipwreck occurred. What most likely happened was that early farmers herded horses onto the island seasonally as a way to avoid mainland grazing fees and taxes, and that a few of the horses escaped and made lives for themselves. These horses are here thanks to Colonial versions of Cliven Bundy.
