The Court of the Lions (Spanish: Patio de los Leones‎) is the main courtyard of the Nasrid dynasty Palace of the Lions, in the heart of the Alhambra, the Moorish citadel formed by a complex of palaces, gardens and forts in Granada, Spain. It was commissioned by the Nasrid sultan Muhammed V of the Emirate of Granada in Al-Andalus. Its construction started in the second period of his reign, between 1362 and 1391 AD. The site is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Courtyard of the Lions is an oblong courtyard, 35 m in length and 20 m in width, surrounded by a low gallery supported on 124 white marble columns. A pavilion projects into the courtyard at each extremity, with filigree walls and light domed roof, elaborately ornamented. The square is paved with coloured tiles, and the colonnade with white marble; while the walls are covered 1.5 m up from the ground with blue and yellow tiles, with a border above and below enamelled blue and gold. The columns supporting the roof and gallery are irregularly placed, with a view to artistic effect; and the general form of the piers, arches and pillars is most graceful. They are adorned by varieties of foliage, etc.; above each arch there is a large square of arabesques; and over the pillars is another square of filigree work. In the center of the courtyard is the celebrated Fountain of Lions, a magnificent alabaster basin supported by the figures of twelve lions in white marble. At present, the fountain is under restoration in an effort to preserve its integrity.

It has been argued by Georges Marçais that the spacing of columns and arches was set to the golden ratio, but there is no strong evidence that Muslim architects ever used it. Instead, as Antonio Fernández-Puertas postulates, the rectangles used in the construction may have been based on square roots and surds.

The structure of the courtyard, has, as it has been said, a direct influence of the Sevillian Patio de las Doncellas, but its meaning and origins trace their roots to early Islamic gardening, the courtyard divided in four parts, each one of them symbolizing one of the four parts of the world. Each part is irrigated by a water channel that symbolize the four rivers of Paradise. This courtyard is, therefore, an architectural materialization of Paradise, where the gardens, the water, and the columns form a conceptual and physical unity. The slender column forest have been said to represent the palm trees of an oasis in the desert, deeply related with Paradise in the Nasrid imagination. In the poem of Ibn Zamrak on the basin of the fountain, a further meaning is stated clearly: "The fountain is the Sultan, which smothers with his graces all his subjects and lands, as the water wets the gardens."

Nowadays the flower garden has been substituted by a dry garden of pebbles, in order not to affect the foundation of the palace with the watering. In Nasrid times, the floor of the quartered planting beds was slightly lower than the general level, and the visual effect was like a tapestry of flowers, as the top of the plants were cut to the same level of the courtyard, and these were carefully chosen to cover a host of color nuances.

Italien / Trentino - Burgruine Arco

Arco Castle (Italian: Castello di Arco, German: Schloss Arch) is a ruined castle located on a prominent spur high above Arco and the Sarca Valley in Trentino, northern Italy.

History

The exact date of its foundation is unknown but it existed at least after the year 1000 AD. The area around Arco was inhabited already before the Middle Ages, the castle was said to have been built by the citizens and only later becoming the property of the local nobles.

The counts of Arco (from Latin arcus, 'bow'), probably of Italian origin (a presumed kinship with the Bavarian counts of Bogen could not be established), were first mentioned in 1124 deed; they temporarily served as liensmen of the Trent prince-bishops. Though they were raised to comital (Grafen) status by the Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick II in 1221, they had to acknowledge the overlordship of the Meinhardiner princely counts of Tyrol in 1272.

The Counts of Arco were expelled by the Prince-Bishops of Trent in 1349, whereafter the castle fell to the Veronese noble house of Scaliger. Nevertheless, they regained the castle in a local uprising, and in 1413 further strengthened their position by obtaining the status of Imperial immediacy from the hands of Emperor Sigismund in 1413. However, in the long run, they could not prevail against the mighty House of Habsburg, rulers of Tyrol since 1363. Arco Castle was captured in 1579, and the counts had to submit to the Habsburgs in 1614. Their estates were officially seized by Emperor Leopold I in 1680.

The castle was later abandoned after a siege by French troops under General Duke Louis Joseph of Vendôme in the course of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703. A careful restoration began 1986 and following others in more recent years restorations have found a number of frescoes depicting knights and court ladies of medieval times.

Either way, my wife was pleased to see a road named after her.

As per Wikipedia the origin and meaning is: "Marilyn is a blend of the English given names Mary and Lynn. It began to be used in the 1920s, and it reached its peak of popularity in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s."

The origins of the village are uncertain even if the most reliable theories attest a fortification, around the IV century BC, by the Utiana tribe that occupied the upper and middle Basento valley. More certain news can be found in the tenth century when the fortified village was occupied by a band of Saracens led by the head Luca, a Greek who converted to Islam who made numerous raids in the neighboring towns until he was expelled from the intervention of Catepano. The castle was later enlarged by the Normans to ensure a better defense of the place against any raiders. The fortress, which is accessed by a staircase located near the last houses of the village, rests directly on the rock and dominates the village of Pietrapertosa.

Today, of the ancient fort, are visible part of the perimeter walls, the entrance arch built with large blocks that form a round arch, slightly lowered, a watch tower and some chambers incised in the rock. Some steps carved directly on the rock face, lead to an observatory with an arch made of sandstone. It seems clear that most of the excavations in the living rock must be attributed to the period of construction while the northern side of the castle has architectural elements that can be traced back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the work of subsequent dominations.

The palace had its origins in a single-storey structure without wings built for Alberto V d'Este (1385), a small retreat intended solely for suppers and diversions, as a sort of banqueting house, with an urban front and a garden front. As the equivalent of a Roman villa suburbana, the Palazzo Schifanoia long predated the first such pleasure villa built in Renaissance Rome, the Belvedere built for Nicholas V.

In 1452 Borso d'Este received the title of Duke for the imperial fiefs of Modena and Reggio Emilia that he held from Emperor Frederick III. The occasion for the cycle of frescoes was the expected investiture of Borso d'Este as Duke of Ferrara in 1471 by Pope Paul II. The subtext of the festivities embodied in the fresco cycle is the right ordering of mankind and nature under the good government of the Duke, the guarantor of peace and prosperity in the Este dominions. Under the commissions of Borso d'Este, the architect Pietro Benvenuto degli Ordini was called upon to develop a ducal apartment on an upper level, providing the building with a salone suitable for presentations of ambassadors and delegations, a counterpart of the governing structure of Ferrara housed in the former Palazzo della Ragione, destroyed in World War II. The palace was often used by Marfisa d'Este, a great patron of the arts.

There, in the Salone dei Mesi ("Hall of the Months"), Cosimo Tura's purely pagan cycle of the months presents the cycle of the year as an allegorical pageant with the appropriate Olympian gods presiding on their fanciful cars drawn by the beasts proper to each deity, with appropriate personifications of the constellations of the zodiac. The frescoes were realized circa 1469–70 by artisans of the d'Este household, the larger figures based on cartoons by Cosmé Tura, and the vignettes of the labors of the year and the activities of the Ferrarese court under the benevolent eye of Borso d'Este, flanked by astrological figures to designs by Francesco del Cossa and Ercole de' Roberti. The learned and elaborate scheme of the allegorical presentations must have come from the immediate circle of Borso d'Este, perhaps from the court astrologer, Pellegrino Prisciani, with some details drawn from Boccaccio's Genealogia deorum.

In the Sala delle Virtù ("Hall of Virtues") nearby, the sculptor Domenico di Paris painted the stucco reliefs in a frieze of putti and symbols of the Cardinal and Theological Virtues, under a painted compartmented ceiling.

The façade was originally decorated with a cornice of feigned battlements, its surface smoothly stuccoed and decorated with geometric designs of highly colorful imitation marbles, which have been lost, lending a somewhat dour public face to Palazzo Schifanoia that was not what Borso d'Este intended. The rich white marble entrance door survives, though its tinted colors have weathered away and art historians disagree whether it is to be attributed to the painter-designer Francesco del Cossa or to Biagio Rossetti. Above the arched door, flanked by pilasters, the Este arms are displayed and the unicorn, a symbol of ducal benevolence and the source of patronage. In 1493 the terracotta cornice was added to designs by Biagio Rossetti, who was also commissioned by Ercole I d'Este to extend the palace.

From the Salone dei Mesi the visitor once passed directly into the gardens reached by a monumental stair from the summer loggia, structures that were demolished in the 18th century. After the Este left Ferrara in 1598, the palazzo was inherited through successive heirs, eventually by the Tassoni family, its frescoes whitewashed over. Eventually, during administration of the duchy as part of the Papal States, with a Habsburg garrison, it became a tobacco warehouse and manufactory. When Palazzo Schifanoia came into the possession of the comune of Ferrara in the aftermath of World War I, only seven of the months in the Salone remained legible.

Palazzo Schifanoia forms part of the heritage of Ferrara conserved under the umbrella of the Musei Civici d'Arte Antica di Ferrara. The 14th and 15th century rooms contain collections of antiquities, a numismatic collection and medals cast by Pisanello and other Quattrocento artists to commemorate members of the Este family.

A snifter of brandy and a cluster of dry rowan berries against the dark background. The whole composition is backlit by candlelight. Everything presented on this photo is really natural. The brandy is of French origin, the rowan berries are naturally dried, the candlelight is the light of a candle. ) The texture was added artificially. Feel free to say your cheering and warming toast in the comment section under this great piece of art. Or just give a salute in the shape of a small star.

Camogli is a fishing village and tourist resort located on the west side of the peninsula of Portofino, on the Golfo Paradiso at the Riviera di Levante, in the Metropolitan City of Genoa, Liguria, northern Italy. As of 31 December 2011 its population was of 5,455. The name Camogli is of disputed but ancient origins. Camogli is one of the largest part of the Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino, and a part of the Portofino Marine Protected Area.

In the late Middle Ages Camogli was a considerable seaport. In its heyday, its fleet consisted of hundreds of Tall Ships, and it was called the "city of a thousand white sails". In 1798 the city hosted a large contingent of Napoleon's fleet, which was then beaten in Egyptian waters of the Nile by Admiral Nelson. A prestigious naval college, Cristoforo Colombo, was founded in Camogli in 1874.

In 1880 the former fishing village had (in a population of 12,000) 500 registered ship captains. Camogli now lives mainly from tourism and is known for its colorful houses that line the beach. The house colors once helped the fishermen of Camogli find the way back to their port.

The Mandarin drake (Aix galericulata) is known for its beautiful colors, but there are also various color mutations as white, apricot (or blonde) and black.

The most common of this rarity is the White Mandarin Duck. Although it is relatively unknown as the origin of this mutation. It is believed that those mutations also occur in nature, but that those birds usually do not survive for long because of their different coloration makes them stand out to predators.

In the wild, Mandarins can be found in northeast China, Korea, Japan and eastern Siberia.

The Mandarin Duck or just Mandarin, is a medium-sized perching duck, closely related to the Carolina Duck or North American Wood Duck (Aix sponsa). It is 41–49 cm long with a 65–75 cm wingspan.

Every tradition, every myth, is based on a grain of truth...

Recent evidence suggests that the easter bunny originated somewhere in what was once the supercontinent Gondwana, 2000 to 2000000000 years ago.

Several factors were important in the creation of the easter bunny story:

- dinosaurs would lay their eggs at this time of year

- their eggs were nutritious

- prehistoric man would be really hungry after a long winter

- being male and hungry predisposed him to making stupid decisions e.g.. stealing dinosaur eggs

- ancient megafauna like megarabbit were slow moving and easy to kill, but not as nutritious as dinosaur eggs

- if you wore megabunny ears like a hat, it would make you (prehistoric man) appear bigger and thus scarier to dinosaurs, increasing your chance of successfully stealing dinosaur eggs and surviving to procreate another day from 1:32544756485 to 1:7362486346

- prehistoric man had not yet mastered statistics or critical thought.

With these well documented facts put together, we can now appreciate how the story of the "easter bunny" and "easter eggs" came to be.

Ofcourse, like all stories, it has changed somewhat over the years, but the main message of Easter has remained the same - chocolate eggs taste better than real eggs, but are far less nutritious.

Happy hunting, and happy Easter!

▶ "Liriope muscari is a species of flowering plant from East Asia. Common names in English include big blue lilyturf, lilyturf, border grass, and monkey grass. It is invasive to North America and considered a threat to native wildlife. Being an easy plant to grow [however], it is one of the most popular garden ground-covers in the southeastern United States.

Liriope muscari typically grows 12 to 18 inches tall (30–45 cm) and features clumps of strap-like, arching, glossy, dark evergreen leaves to ½ inch wide (1.3 cm). The small, showy flowers occur on erect spikes with tiered whorls of dense, white to violet-purple flowers rising above the leaves in late summer. Flowers resemble those of grape hyacinth (Muscari), which is the origin of the specific epithet. Flowers develop into blackish berries which often persist into winter."

@ 6400 ISO @ F/2.8-22

Espero que os guste…

The text at the top of the door indicates where the ancestor of the family came from.

I swirled the water around inside the bowl of this leaf to get this shot. This one was the most amusing--like it has a little mouth or something.
