As a dyed in the wool New Yorker and a hopeless romantic, no Valentine's Day would be complete without a little "When Harry Met Sally." Perhaps the restaurant where Meg Ryan faked an orgasm and Rob Reiner's Mom said "I'll have what she's having" is not the typical love story but the sandwiches at Katz's are so good that corned beef to take away deserves one of those blue Tiffany boxes.
Of course this isn't really a February fourteenth view but close, the very beginning of spring on East Houston Street. It was the day of the 99th Memorial for the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. After paying my respects I decided to take a walk over to Pike and Henry to see what the view of the famous photograph by Bernice Abbott looked like now. Walking that route, through the Lower East Side, I was inspired to try my hand at street photography for the very first time.
I wound up getting several good shots that day and this was not even my favorite but there is a story to go with it, a typical New Yorker story that I love to tell. For this particular composition I was standing as far from the curb as possible and holding my old Canon G10 over my head trying to frame a bunch of people waiting for the light to turn green for the foot of the photo while getting in the whole famous Katz's sign above the building.
After a few angry cab drivers finally drove me back towards the curb with their honking horns I pulled the camera down to eye level to start chimping the shots. I muttered to myself "Ah Shit!" but loud enough so the young man in this photo heard me. He said "I'm sorry" thinking I was trying to shoot over the crowd and I said "It's nothing you did. I'm upset because I cut off your puppies feet."
Hearing that the young man said "Oh okay I'll pose for you." The light turned green, the rest of the pedestrians cleared out and two perfect strangers played photographer and model for a little while. It was a very fun exchange with a person I never saw again. I thought of the Tyler Durden expression "Single Serving Friends."
Happy Valentine's Day.

I've been thinking about the proximity of the orgasm to death and spiritual revelation. In my work I've been considering the orgasm as a kind of transcendence, and using metaphors like "orgasming against something plastic" to explore the human experience of when revelation falls short and faith is not found. In this painting it is the constructed nature of the intimacy that suggests ecstasy is just out of reach. I wanted to create something equally portrait, self-portrait, and an examination of post-feminist self-objectification.

Poetry is passion . . . no, it’s more than passion . . . it’s orgasmic passion (desire starts in the mind, Walt Whitman would agree) . . . it overfills every atom of body & soul with so many emotions that you feel if it does not come out, you might explode. Same with love. I always thought that certain feelings we can feel only as teenagers, and as we get older, eventually they disappear, and life becomes an emotionless straight line. It’s not so. It’s more of a foundation of which sometimes we might not be even aware. Our feelings for what we love over the years become stronger & more passionate. Music and books that we grow up interacting with as teenagers or young adults at that moment in time are just a period of time when we are young, whether it be in a class or entertainment. Eventually, over the years, when you put your time into it, you make it your experience, you spend more time learning and feeling it becomes a part of you, and this is when you fall in love. And that love is much stronger than teenage love or adolescent love. And then you stare it in the face and realise it’s no longer nostalgia but rather an appreciation of something that filled you with that passion so many years and inspired you to live, feel & love in this overwhelming, sometimes complicated world. And that’s love.
Self-explanatory, but i can't help talking about it anyway. These ladies could not be happier staring at their copy machine if it poured them drinks and sang like Frank Sinatra.

One of the most original ideas that I have ever seen for a wedding bouquet.
I recently had the pleasure of taking some wedding photographs for a friend. I had no idea the level of detail that had been put into the smaller wedding items.
All of the bouquets were made from pages of books. This particular one was one of the 50 shades of grey trilogy.
This was actually one of the tamer versions....
