Song of the day: In 1985, Canada's music legends came together to form Northern Lights for Africa, for African relief. This song, however, still stands today as I see my country and the world changing...

In the Baroque St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta.

The church was first built 1573-78, after a design by Girolamo Cassar, born in Malta, but got its current looks in the century after. It was the main church of worship for the knights of St John (who dominated the island in the 17th and 18th centuries).

If you are wondering what a co-cathedral is, that is what you get when you are in a diocese that already has a cathedral (in Mdina), but thinks another church is just as a grand and important (if not more so). So the bishop can use it as an alternative cathedral. This solution dates to 1820s, when the knights had left. Initially the cathedral was called Chiesa Conventuale di San Giovanni Battista (yes, it had an Italian name - in English that is Conventual Church of St. John)

Another shot from 1 of the beautifully clear nights last week on the isle of wight. Taken from possibly the most photographed Milky Way spot on the island. St Catherines Oratory. I added my own little twist on this with the addition of a bit of light painting to add some foreground interest :-)

The Royal Oratory is a late Gothic gallery in St. Vitus Cathedral, built around 1490 for King Władysław Jagiellończyk to attend liturgy with his court. It connects the royal residence to the cathedral through a porch that still exists today, despite later reconstruction. Architecturally, it draws inspiration from Peter Parler's style and features a tripartite vault and a suspended keystone. The richly decorated balustrade includes twisting Gothic motifs, small figurines, and coats of arms representing the king’s territories. The oratory is attributed to the architect Benedikt Ried.

I took part on a Birmingham photographic group visit to Birmingham Oratory. This church has a strong association with Cardinal Newman who was recently canonised. So much to see and enjoy.

Evening outing with Celbridge Camera Club.

Memorial to the Irish soldiers who served in World War 1, this oratory was painted by Sister Concepta Lynch in her spare time over 16 years. Using stencils and her gift of heraldry art techniques she painted onto the concrete wall. It’s most impressive and is only open to the public for a few months each year.

The Gallarus Oratory is believed to be an early Christian church located on the Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, Ireland.

L'oratoire de Gallarus est peut-être une très ancienne église chrétienne. Elle est située sur la presqu'île de DIngle dans le comté de Kerry en Irlande

It is possible to take a photo of this head on, so that you see the statue. Sadly I didn't see how, before I'd uploaded another photo I took of it.

Something to take on another visit.

The position of the present church is probably the site of St Clarus's 9th century wattle and daub oratory. Originally built by the Normans, the Grade I-listed Church of St Clarus was rebuilt in the 13th century and additions made in the 14th and 15th centuries. It has a fine tower 97 feet high with four typical Cornish pinnacles.

Ancient dry-stone (no mortar) corbeled craftsmanship, over 1000 years old

The Gallarus Oratory, a well-preserved stone chapel in Gallarus Townland, in Kilmalkedar civil parish in the northwestern part of the Dingle Peninsula (in County Kerry, Munster Province, southwest Ireland), on a heavily overcast afternoon in mid-May 2024.

The date when the corbel-vaulted Gallarus Oratory – in Irish, Séipéilín Ghallarais – was built is not known or agreed upon; it may well have been an Early Christian structure built some time between the 6th and 10th centuries but may, alternatively, have been built during the 11th or 12th century. Today its appearance suggests drystone construction, although mortar may have been used originally.

The Dingle Peninsula is the northernmost of the five peninsulas of southwestern Ireland that stick out like fingers into the Atlantic Ocean. Its name in Irish is Corca Dhuibhne, sometimes Anglicised as Corkaguiny. The western Dingle is part of the Gaeltacht, one of the areas of the Republic of Ireland where Irish is officially designated as the primary spoken language. The townland's name in Irish is Gallaras, and that of the parish is Cill Maoilchéadair.

I wanted to play around with some long exposures near blue hour, but I didn't get many and they didn't quite turn out. I tried several shorter exposures from this perspective, lowering the height of the tripod as I went, before I finally removed the camera from the tripod altogether. The key was getting the camera on the deck! Unfortunately, only a small number of the Christmas lights on the trees around Ave Maria's Oratory were on.

St. Helens Oratory is a tiny early Christian chapel located in a field at Cape Cornwall. The remains of St. Helen's Oratory date back as far as Roman times. On the distance cliffs sits the remains of Kenidjack Castle.
