This beautiful female Orangutan looks soulfully into my lens... what might she be thinking, whatever it is she is gentle and kind.
The Orangutans of South East Asian rainforests are amongst the most endangered species on earth. There were two orangutans in a large well designed enclosure at the Melbourne Zoo. They are here, because they were bred in the zoo as part of an effort the fight extinction. But as I watched them, I couldn't help feeling sorry for their plight, as these primates wanted to be free.
"We all recognise these highly intelligent and impressive animals – orangutans. But very few people know anything about how they live and their habits. Around 6,000 of these animals die every year; they are among the world’s most endangered species!" - Gerd Schuster, Willie Smits, Jay Ullal (Thinkers of the Jungle)
Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abeli) female named "Indah". Mother of 2, including a 5 year old little girl ( "Aisha") at the San Diego Zoo. Conservation Status: Critically endangered
On my first outing with a new lens, I enountered this magnificent Orangutan at the Atlanta Zoo **Note: I had previously mistakenly tagged this image as "Silverback Gorilla", as I was working on processing several images from my Zoo Atlanta shoot. I wish to thank the Keen Eye of Flickr Photographer Evan Karageorgos for catching my mistake. Thanks!
