The Department of Sport Management hosted the 10th annual Student Research Colloquium on Friday, April 5th in the Pond Inlet.
The day featured 11 oral presentations and four poster presentations from a mixture of undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students.
The colloquium featured 12 Brock presenters, along with students from Western, Waterloo, Laurentian, Windsor, and Cazenovia (NY) College also presenting their work.
The conference’s opening remarks were made by visiting scholar Dr. Geoff Dickson, Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, Auckland University of Technology, who shared his wisdom and advice from his experience as both a sport management practitioner and academic.
Attendees also learned a great deal from the keynote panel of industry experts Robert Hilson, Brock University; Dave Watkins, Hamilton Tiger-Cats; Robert Craig, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, who discussed the role research plays in each of their respective organizations.
Last week, my ninth graders gave oral presentations. Today, they began thinking about the criteria for giving a positive presentation. First they generated a list of 20 or so things that they thought made a good presentation. Then, in pairs, they tried to winnow their lists down to a top 10; and then on the board, using Post-It® Notes, they tried to winnow it down to five in each of three categories: Content, personal style, and team style. The results have been interesting.
