Southern College of Optometry's Community Outreach program provided eye and vision care to Memphis area homeless people as part of Project Homeless Connect today. Sponsored by the Community Alliance for the Homeless, the program provided access to medical care, legal services, veterans' affairs and other important resources at the Cook Convention Center in Downtown Memphis.

SCO faculty members were assisted by interns and other volunteers in an elaborate process that involved checking in participants, performing a checklist of assessments and examinations, and aiding homeless citizens who lack access to the most basic care.

I feel bad for the optometry center that had to put up with me for 4 months deliberating over frames. At first I was leaning towards Yamatos but I hated the flashy temples. I vacillated between Hugo Boss and Yamatos and they tried to convince me on Prada (NO!). On a whim they suggested Oakleys, and although I know they make Rx, I was hesitant. Yet, they turned out looking pretty snazzy. Retro yet trendy. Yes I know, completely not me. I'll get them in two weeks, just in time for Sarah's wedding!

Now You See Me

Or perhaps now you don't ...

This bizarre looking device has seen to seeing that unseeing people get to see again. It probably has done so for decades.

The Bausch and Lomb Green's Genothalmic Refractor was introduced in 1934 following a long design gestation from the original Clyde L. Hunsicker invention, the 'optometer'. It went on to enjoy four decades of unrivaled use as the 'gold standard' of professional eye care equipment. Even today they are still being used to good effect.

This old specimen has however been retired to live out its days as a store front prop in a Hutt Street photography studio. I find the link a bit tenuous but it sure looks good in the shop window.

I'd wager a small bet that most of you of a similar age have been seen to and seen through one of these beauties sometime in your life,

... so maybe you do after all.
