I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. ~Elwyn Brooks White, Essays of E.B. White, 1977

A beautiful grey lichen on Hazel.

Still working on the ID.

The West Highlands of Scotland are home to a characteristic type of coastal hazelwood, rarely found elsewhere. Whereas hazel is often a component of mixed woodlands dominated by bigger trees such as ash, on the west coast it can often form almost pure stands, in exposed coastal locations. Outstanding examples of this woodland type in the Sunart Oakwoods area can be found at Drimnin, in Morvern, and Ardslignish and Sonachan in west Ardnamurchan, with smaller areas elsewhere.

These coastal hazelwoods are rich with wild flowers in springtime before the leaves on the trees are out, but less obviously to the untrained eye, also play host to a unique and very diverse lichen flora.

The importance of these woods for lichens is a result of a number of factors: the mild 'oceanic' climate; the special characteristics of hazelbark that make it suitable for a wide range of lichens to grow on; the lack of atmospheric pollution in the area; and finally the particular structure and long-established nature of the woodlands.

What better way to celebrate July 4 than commune with history. Finally made it to the War of 1812 Cemetery in Cheektowaga, near Buffalo NY. Located just near the airport it is small plot where about 300, mostly US soldiers were buried. It is not clear exactly what the war was for, it ultimately ended without any change of borders, or status, but claimed a lot of lives of soldiers and their Native American allies on both sides.

During the war of 1812 the army was apparently ill equipped for the Niagara Frontier winter and many more men were killed from diseases, especially diarrhea, than gunshots. There was a camp with barracks and hospital facilities that stretched from this spot (near the airport runway) to Main street in Williamsville. It was situated along Ellicott Creek. The numbers of casualties was so high that they had to bury men in a mass grave in a farm field. In the end about 300 men were buried here.

I'm not much of a July 4 partier, but I find spots like this to be places to meditate on the nature of American freedom, the cost for it, and remember those who have fallen in the line of duty. These men have been gone for little over 200 years and it is important to recognize them, know them and understand them. Perhaps with more empathy towards them and their ends might finally make us say no more to killing....I'm not optimistic here but I can hope. As they say "those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it." I say we need to actually feel it and understand these young men as men, living breathing guys with lives and families, not just white crosses on a small field next to the airport.

Finally it further reinforces my feelings that our leaders have supreme responsibility to utilize our armed forces with the greatest of diligence, exhausting all avenues before resorting to warfare. Even when the outcome is positive, and the cause right war is just one of the ugliest and most damaging sides of our nature. My grandfathers fought WWII and bore seeing terrible things. The cause was right but the number of people killed and damaged worldwide is uncountable. For the 4th I am in deep gratitude for those who serve and served, and wish for a time when the only rockets and bombs are those for a fireworks display for free people, and especially the young men and women who should be attending picnics, planning on long lives, not burial in mass graves.

The tower blocks at Cruddas Park, opened with an optimistic flourish by Hugh Gaitskell Labour leader, on the 9th June 1962, have had yet another makeover. This latest revamp is more radical than previous ones and the optimism returns.

Thomas Dan Smith was Newcastle City leader from 1960 to 1965 with a vision to improve the city and make it a commercial centre to rival the best in the world. He was compared to an American style 'city boss', called Mr. Newcastle by his supporters, and Mouth of the Tyne by his opponents.

Whilst many see him as a visionary, and ahead of his time, others brand him a charlatan, entangled in a web of corruption that almost toppled the Wilson Labour government.

His most controversial plan was for high rise housing, and the Cruddas Park scheme was part of what was called a 'city in the sky'.

The flats were built by Wimpey to a Swedish modular design. It was later to be alleged that Dan Smith took cash and other benefits for awarding the contracts.

Smith was sentenced to six years imprisonment for his involvement in the Poulson affair.

dont know if any of you are interested in Sears/Kmart but I kinda am. the Sears closest to my house had this banner up when I went in to pick up some stuff I ordered. Kinda funny how it says "and counting" when the company is almost bankrupt but an optimistic view always makes it look better.

Well these guys were optimistic. I didn't see a decent wave all the way up and down the East coast but they were still hanging out and waiting. Who knows, maybe they got lucky after I left.

OPTIMISTIC HEALTHCARE HEROES

On Nov. 16, the Optimist Club of Bayfield presented the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $1,500 as part of the 12th Annual Health Care Heroes Radiothon run by CKNX radio.Presenting the cheque on behalf of the Optimists was President Joyce McIlwain. Accepting for the Foundation were Philip Keightley, AMGHF director (left), and Gary Lloyd-Rees. As Treasurer of the AMGH Foundation, Reese said,"The Foundation is extremely grateful to the Optimist Club of Bayfield for their generous donation. The funds will be going towards our current $400,000 campaign to replace the two anaesthetic machines used in the two operating rooms in the Goderich Hospital that are reaching the end of their useful lives. This year’s Radiothon has raised over $600,000 for 15 local hospital Foundations across Mid-Western Ontario to support their campaigns to purchase much needed capital equipment for the hospitals that they support. Donations like this one from the Bayfield Optimists help ensure that quality health care remains available close to home, helping to build healthy and vibrant communities." I like my eye here a lot...

Optimistic looking claim for this old building in Caroline Street, Longton. Good luck to any potential occupant.

For this project, I decided to make a CD for my second idol, the late Tupac Shakur. Tupac inspired my overall optimistic view on life, my philosophical way of thinking, my drive to help people who suffer from depression, and my addiction towards writing poetry. I wanted this CD to be like a tribute to him, but I wanted it to also represent him as my idol, and all the changes he made in my life. In other words, I guess I could label it as “my Tupac CD”, because even though it has Tupac’s name, Tupac’s songs, and Tupac’s face on it, it contains the songs that inspired me, pictures of Tupac that I edited and enhanced to represent his spiritual and personal characteristics, a title that I came up with in order to represent the overall focus and mood of the CD, and a cover I created from scratch that contains certain artistic elements that represent the overall mood, focus, and views I had of Tupac. I decided to title the CD “Eternal Rebirth”, because I believe that Tupac still lives through his music, and, through his music, he still inspires people like me. To add on to the concept of the title, one of my favorite quotes from Tupac was: “I’m not saying I’ll change the world, but I guarantee I’ll spark the brain that will change the world. So keep your head up. Do what you got’ta do. And then, inside of you, I’ll be reborn.” Every single element of the cover represents the Tupac that I saw and love. I made the cover mostly black, because, while he was growing up, Tupac was always in an environment that was very dark, very painful, and he was constantly exposed to a lot of violence and other dark elements of poverty. These elements became the soul focus of his overall mood, and are expressed in all of his songs. However, through these dark and painful moods and views he had, Tupac was always like the light that guides you out of the cave for those who lived in poverty in the same harsh and violent environments he lived in. To represent this, I made the images of Tupac white, or black and white, to show how he shined through all of the pain, all of the violence, and all of the other dark elements that were a part of his life. The center image expresses this concept the most with the glowing highlighted effects. However, I also used this image to represent Tupac’s spiritual views, and how they just shine through all of these dark elements in life. I also used this center image to represent him as a spirit that still shines. The other two images on the front represent the phases he went through: West Side on the left and THUG LIFE on the on the right. The image of him on the back represents the overall depressive mood he was constantly in. I inserted a highlighted city landscape at the bottom to represent Tupac’s overall environmental focus on urban poverty. I inserted a cross with images of Tupac in the middle to represent his love for God. And of course, I could not leave out the Parental Advisory sticker to represent Tupac’s explicit lyrics. Rest in peace Tupac Amaru Shakur.
