(Gesualdo Bufalino)

Life is a path along which we grow, we encounter obstacles, we struggle to achieve our dreams and we become wiser by all going in the same direction. Our stay is limited, but this does not mean we must live passively oppressed by our destiny. On the contrary, we must try to get the best out of existence.

There are those who travel to get lost, there are those who travel to find themselves.

(Gesualdo Bufalino)

The nights are drawing in so it means not being up so late to shoot the sunset. Alas the weather is closing in too and making it less and less likely that the sunset will be clear of cloud.

In this particular shot the sky had been clear just moments before as I watched and waited for the sun to descend to the horizon when out of nowhere these ominous looking black giants appeared and swallowed up the light. The air changed, as if oppressed by their presence, and cold breath rushed in to push away all the warmth. The smell of the world moved from the sweet aroma of a summer meadow to the sharp bitters tones of damp leaves and pine and with a deep breath and a sigh I acknowledged to myself that the season was well and truly over...

As announced, this is a view of the metro station Museumsinsel itself. When I first read that the station was inspired by Karl Friedrich Schinkel's famous set design for the scene of The Arrival of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute; please see the link to Schinkel's design in the description for my previous upload which you can also find in the first comment), I thought "Wow, I can't wait to see it, it must be gorgeous!" And when I finally visited the station shortly after it had been opened, I was a little disappointed because it has none of the lightness and airiness that made Schinkel's set design so special and magical. To me, the station's overall impression is quite heavy, even somewhat oppressing, mainly because of the big, square columns and the fairly low ceilings. All of it probably because a part of the station lies under the river Spree, so there must have been special requirements regarding the station's structure and safety. But still... Somehow, the station even reminds me of modern-day brutalism of sorts, not of beautiful music and a starry night. But that's just my perception.

For Sliders Sunday, here's a selective colour version. I think this image lends itself to that type of editing because in the full-colour version, the dark grey granite from the Fichtelgebirge (Fichtel Mountains) in Bavaria had a yellowish hue due to the lights in the station. I didn't like that at all, so I desaturated all colours except the vibrant blue. This time, I also left the (one) person in the image, for scale. And yes, it was 2021, so the lady who waited at the station wore a face mask.

Happy Sliders Sunday, Everyone, wishing you a sunny week ahead!

Whenever I am sad or happy this song never fails me... <3

“My prayers, my tears, my wishes, fears, and lamentations, were witnessed by myself and heaven alone. When we are harassed by sorrows or anxieties, or long oppressed by any powerful feelings which we must keep to ourselves, for which we can obtain and seek no sympathy from any living creature, and which yet we cannot, or will not wholly crush, we often naturally seek relief in poetry—and often find it, too—whether in the effusions of others, which seem to harmonize with our existing case, or in our own attempts to give utterance to those thoughts and feelings in strains less musical, perchance, but more appropriate, and therefore more penetrating and sympathetic, and, for the time, more soothing, or more powerful to rouse and to unburden the oppressed and swollen heart.”

― Anne Brontë, Agnes Grey

The Quran describes the oppressor or tyrant as "deaf, dumb and blind", which is essentially the spiritual reality of the tyrant. He cannot hear the cries of his victims; he cannot communicate with those he oppresses because he imperiously views them as representatives of a lower order of being than himself, and thus as mere commodities to be exploited or, even worse, as plagues to be cleansed; and he cannot see the harm he does. Aristotle (d. 322 BC) reminds us that all tyrants invariably surround themselves with sycophants because they cannot bear the truth. But the tyrant also needs these sycophants because he demands tacit approval of his beliefs and actions, and most of all he fears an honest and critical view of himself. The more the tyrant's power grows, the less he tolerates dissent. What is true of the tyrant is also true of the tyrannical nation. He demands that everyone agree with him and affirm his position because he cannot see, hear or speak to anyone but himself. He believes that his vision is clear, his understanding is unsurpassed, and his words, and only his words, are worthy of utterance or consideration. As human beings, only through others can we truly see ourselves, hear ourselves and talk to ourselves; but in his fixation on himself the tyrant is totally incapable of such reflection.

I have done what is righteous and just;

do not leave me to my oppressors.

Ensure your servant’s well-being;

do not let the arrogant oppress me.

My eyes fail, looking for your salvation,

looking for your righteous promise.

Deal with your servant according to your love

and teach me your decrees.

This photo could symbolize many things. Suppression of little people; Dictatorship; Deep State; Big Brother; oppression against women. In fact, it represents the opposite. Jan Žižka led an army of peasants, little people against the powerful Roman Empire and they were victorious due his clever military tactics for many years (1419-1434) even after his death in 1424. Equipped with simple modified farming tools, his small army demonstrated the Power of People. The monumental bronze statue was sculpted by B. Kafka in 1931-1941 and is part of Vítkov National Monument. Žižka historical heroics are always on the mind of the Czech folk, when their freedoms are in jeopardy.

There is no frigate like a book

To take us lands away,

Nor any coursers like a page

Of prancing poetry.

This traverse may the poorest take

Without oppress of toll;

How frugal is the chariot

That bears a human soul!

“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:2

19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 1 Peter 2:19-23

Isaiah 53:6,7

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

(Psalm 9:9)

As I've said before, every photograph is an act of love. To connect with a fellow human is a deep and fulfilling experience. We cannot lose that aspect of ourselves. Those who discriminate and oppress have forgotten their own humanity and are suffering their own inner turmoil as well. It is a disconnect that prevents the full range of emotional experiences and only causes further suffering. True acceptance and respect for all creatures on Earth is what leads us to peace.

"O falce di luna calante"-

Poesia di Gabriele D'Annunzio.

O falce di luna calante

che brilli su l’acque deserte,

o falce d’argento, qual mèsse di sogni

ondeggia al tuo mite chiarore qua giù!

Aneliti brevi di foglie,

sospiri di fiori dal bosco

esalano al mare: non canto non grido

non suono pe’l vasto silenzïo va.

Oppresso d’amor, di piacere,

il popol de’ vivi s’addorme...

O falce calante, qual mèsse di sogni

ondeggia al tuo mite chiarore qua giù!

Our Lady of Sorrows Church (Latvian: Sāpju Dievmātes Romas katoļu baznīca) is a Roman Catholic church in Riga, the capital of Latvia. The church is situated at the address 5 Pils Street. It was built in 1785.

The white and blue Our Lady of Sorrows Church was the first stone church built in Riga after the Reformation had reached Livonia (a historic region once encompassing present-day Latvia and Estonia). The idea of constructing the church was especially supported by Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II. The Classicism-style building was dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows symbolising the oppressed Catholic Religion in Terra Mariana.

Our Lady of Sorrows Church was preceded by a modest and small chapel build under Father Isidor Schmidt and noticed by Emperor Joseph II, who paid a visit to Riga in 1780. Emperor promised to talk to Catherine II in order to get her consent to building a new Catholic church. The construction began after four years and was finished in 1785.

According to an order by the Empress of Russia, the church was designed in the Classicism style like the all surrounding buildings on Pils Square. It was dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows as a symbol to the oppressed Catholic Religion in Terra Mariana. The name also applies to the bellfry which was erected rather low and unpretentious.

From 1858 to 1860, the church was rebuilt according to design of Riga architect Johann Felsko - the presbytery was located in the SW wing, with a new sacristy being added and the facade being changed into the Pseudo-Roman style. Only the white and blue colours still remind one of its Classicism past.

There's a certain slant of light,

On winter afternoons,

That oppresses, like the weight

Of Cathedral tunes.

Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886)

When your country continues to profit off of institutionalized racism, it is not freedom. When your country continues to give guns more rights than humans, that is not freedom. When your country denies people the right to body autonomy, that is not freedom. When your country does not provide a safe space for non Christians to attend public school, that is not freedom. When your country actively suppresses voting rights, primarily in those neighborhoods where African Americans, Natives, and Latinx humans live, that is not freedom. When your country allows corporations to oppress its workers and release toxins that lead to disease and death into the air and drinking water, valuing profit over human safety, that is not freedom.

When your country urges you to look up to your forefathers as heroes and these same people owned humans, you have to challenge this notion. When your country criticizes you for protesting and fighting for those who committed treason to be held accountable, you need to speak up. When your country continues to cause danger abroad and at home for immigrants, you need to realize this is unjust and fight for change.

Or: When the half is the whole. This is what the escalator from my previous image (in the first comment) really looks like when seen from the KaDeWe's ground floor and looking up to the (amazingly dirty) glass roof of the 7th floor which houses the more buffet-style restaurant Wintergarten. My suggestion: If you happen to be at the KaDeWe and are hungry for a snack, go to the 6th floor.

I've been back to the moving staircase this Friday, this time with the Laowa C-Dreamer 7.5mm/F2 prime lens and the GRIII mounted with the wide-angle adapter GW-4 which expands the GRIII's native 28mm to 21mm. Initially, I'd wanted to take the 7-14 wide-angle zoom lens, but it doesn't handle very bright light sources all too well, and there are plenty of such lights at the KaDeWe, while the Laowa creates nice light stars. So the latter was the "safe" choice (regarding the photo output), plus it's super tiny, so it was also the safer choice regarding noticeability. Once again, it was no problem at all to take photos there, but I got noticed by an employee, and for a very short moment I was afraid that his charming remark "You've got a nice camera!" would be followed by "But you aren't allowed to take photos here." But that didn't happen. He smiled and quickly moved up the escalator. Phew.

And why am I telling you all of this when the image you see is one taken at my previous photo walk and with the LX100? Well, you will see photos taken with the Laowa and the GRIII sometime in the future, and – once again – I realised that it is almost impossible to replicate a photo even when you are in the exact same spot as the last time, and especially so when different focal lengths are involved. I also wanted to show you what I started with to create the kaleidoscoped image and how simple and straightforward it was to achieve the kaleidoscope effect – at least this time: Take the single image, copy it to a second layer in PS, flip one layer horizontally, and combine both layers to a single image. Done.

The SOOC RAW file was in landscape mode, and at first, I wanted to upload this single image in its original orientation but then decided to rotate it to the left so it's easier for you to see how the kaleidoscoped image came to be. In addition to this, this image looks much lighter and airier in portrait mode, while in landscape format the scene looks a lot denser and sort of heavy, oppressed even – which is a little what it feels like to ride this moving staircase up and down because the opposed single escalators on each floor are built in a rather compact way, and sometimes, you can even touch the underside of the escalator going to the next floor – someone did, most likely a child or a teenager, because on my Friday visit I noticed a cat sticker on the underside of one of the escalators ;)

I've taken all the LX100 photos of the escalator in 16:9 (it's the only camera where I ever change the image ratio for shooting, because it has a convenient toggle on top of its fixed lens which allows you to quickly choose between 1:1, 3:2, the native 4:3, or 16:9), and since 16:9 images look very "slim", especially in portrait mode, I've added the white frame to make it look a little "beefier". I've also added a little more colour punch to this version so it won't simply look like the previous image "cut in half".

There's a certain Slant of light,

Winter Afternoons --

That oppresses, like the Heft

Of Cathedral Tunes --

Heavenly Hurt, it gives us --

We can find no scar,

But internal difference,

Where the Meanings, are --

None may teach it -- Any --

'Tis the Seal Despair --

An imperial affliction

Sent us of the Air --

When it comes, the Landscape listens --

Shadows -- hold their breath --

When it goes, 'tis like the Distance

On the look of Death –

Bullying is not right. Using someone's suffering to make you feel better about yourself is not right. Think about how you want to be treated. Then think about how you treat everyone else. Take a look at yourself sweetie you are not as crafty as you think you are.

Though the storm rages in the darkness, we still have each other. The virus slaughters our elders and siblings, the politicians seize power, the economy destroys those who cannot afford stocks, and the bigots kill and oppress the less privileged.

Looking into our phones, the world is falling apart. So we stay in our shelter, and wait for the storm to end. Please God, let it end.

But until it does, we still have each other, safe together in our homes. At least for today.

The Geomethras - Spiritas Geometrium by Daniel Arrhakis (2022)

The Geomethras - Spiritas Geometrium

A special mystical order in the future that who are looking for the Spirit Of Geometry "Spiritas Geometrium" or who try to find, discover and interpret the intrinsic spirituality of certain geometric objects.

According to this theory developed by one of the Ion mystical theorists, certain geometric shapes potentiate and emanate certain spiritual forces and energies, strengthening the spirit or oppressing it.

The geometries created by nature or by man have within them a transforming and creative spiritual force that has been imprinted on them by natural laws or by the laws of human thought and universal consciousness.

This spiritual force is further enhanced by light and the trinomial, light, color and texture.

Changing any of the factors in this way can induce in the same geometric form different sensations or ambiances that are perceived by our senses and that ultimately condition our states of soul.

The main objective is to compile knowledge in a sacred book "The Geomethras Infinitus" or the "Geomethron" that will lead to the discovery of " The Perfect Sacred Geometry" a geometry without imperfections and with powers similar to the Philosopher's Stone of the alchemists but with a more universal scope.

In the next works we will explore this theme.

Let America Love. Let America learn acceptance and intelligence. Let America learn how to exist in the world without oppressing others. Let America learn about Science so that we stop committing crimes against the environment. Let America heal.

Please vote tomorrow. The world can't take four more years of this insane hedonist hell bent on destroying everyone but himself, including the very air we breathe and the food we eat. Say no to that!

The oppressed are allowed once every few years to decide which particular representatives of the oppressing class are to represent and repress them in parliament. - Vladimir Lenin

We must remember during this time how many good humans have lost their homes while billionaires continue to profit like crazy. We need a complete overhaul of these harmful systems that allow a very few to keep their power and oppress others who suffer endlessly. We also need to make sure that the taxes collected from us go to the common good including low income housing measures, mental health clinics, improved health care, and public education.
